Why I Became a Conservative

Most conservatives that I've met, have formed their opinions about Liberals or Progressives from untrustworthy sources. They think we're in lock-step with some weird agenda. Look..there's plenty of so-called ideas that have come from Libs that I think is wrong/nuts. Example: Pythons are destroying the Everglades (here in Florida) People have bought the damn things..then let them free after the "Fun" is gone from owning one.
NOW the animal rights people want to make sure that they are captured and taken to good homes. WTF!..there's 10's of thousands of the #@$# snakes in a huge area. Shoot the Sons-a-B.... and be done with it. Plus other means to keep them from coming back. Get-rid-of-them. Period.
My point is: There's lots of weird ideas on both sides of the aisle. This poster thinks the right-wingers have more nuts than the Liberals do but I still try to find common ground with both sides. Yeah..sometimes it's almost impossible.

untrustworthy sources

Or just common sense?

Example: Pythons are destroying the Everglades

You're using "pythons" as an example?(LOL)

The loyalty for Trump has nothing at all to do with conservative values. Everyone knows there's not an ounce of conservatism in his body. I believe this is all about the conservative fight for Trump. Conservatives believe that Trump has been wronged in many ways. Wronged by the press, wronged by anti-Trump social media, wronged by international news media, wronged by Mueller, wronged by Congress, and wronged by anti-Trump forces in general. The right sees this as everyone else against Trump so they're there to defend him, they're there to be his 'real voice' the one he still can't use in public. "Send them back" "Lock her up". Trump has never said that, has he? No, but his staff in the audience started the 'send them back' chant and it was quickly picked up by the people at his rally.

Support for Trump among white evangelical Protestants is 25 points higher than the national average. The enthusiastic, uncritical embrace and clinging to Trump by white evangelicals is probably one of the most mind-blowing facts concerning his base. How can a group that, especially during the Bill Clinton presidency, insisted that character counts and that personal integrity is an essential component of presidential leadership. How can these same 'good Christian' believers turn a blind eye to the ethical and moral offenses of Donald Trump and not only that, but also constantly defend him?

I believe they feel they are in a struggle with us -- the 'anti-Trump left', not with Russia, N. Korea or Iran, but with they're own fellow citizens. Right-wing conservatives believe that without Trump, there would be a moral decay, an overwhelming crash of American culture and American Christianity. The right is defending an immoral man who has corrupted the Justice Dept. with the appointment of William Barr, hollowed out the most important agencies that provide for our welfare like the CIA and Dept of National Intelligence, erased EPA regulations that protect wildlife and the planet in favor of big oil companies and has surrounded himself with nothing other than 'yes men'.

For Trump's base, his demoralizing and dehumanizing tactics aren't a flaw in him, they're a feature. There's an undeniable hypocrisy of people who once made moral character, and especially sexual fidelity, central to their political calculus and who are now embracing a man of boundless corruptions and sexual indiscretions. 'The Church' is in one of its deepest moments of crisis because of what has been exposed to be the shame of the American Church in its capacity to be able to see and serve and engage in ways in which are in accordance to what the American Church preaches.

There are no "liberals" anymore. I remember when liberals existed, but the ones who call themselves "liberals" are all leftists now, with a thirst for power and control.

"thirst for power and control"?

You mean like when the slaves wanted to be "in power of their lives and control their destiny?"

I want that kind of power and control and Trump is trying to take it away from me.

What is the obsession some of you have with making everything about Trump?

Perhaps because these days "everything is about Trump"?

You mean "wronged" like what HE DID himself to others?

Incredible and a perfect example of how a conservative thinks and analyzes things.

Let's start with the definition of what being a Liberal is:

Definition of liberal :

a : one who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or established forms or ways

Open minded means that he/she is willing to consider new ideas. After all, things change every day as we progress in technology and knowledge and being able to be open minded about it makes sense, doesn't it?

Compared to Conservative that wants to keep everything as it has always been. No I phones, no computers, wife's place is in the kitchen and taking care of the kids, no progress..............just the same, over and over again.

Secondly, the article states "he knows Liberals and doesn't want them running things". My question is "why not" How does being a Liberal mean they cannot run things? Is being a Liberal mean they are stupid and being Conservative intelligent? Is being Liberal mean they are incompetent and being Conservative competent?

Isn't each person supposed to be judged by who they are, their education, their ability, their knowledge, and experience? Or just whether they are of Conservative or Liberal? or party association?

Words are cheap and everyone has a ton of them. Nonetheless, those who say them (or write them in the case of this OP) are uninformed and unthinking individuals that if put in a position to "run things", they probably would run them into the ground within a few days.

Tags are for losers. When a person is judged by the color of his skin, the party he belongs to, his religion, and whether he has Conservative leanings or Liberal leanings and not by his ability and competence we end up with leaders like Trump that don't know anything, solve nothing, and who plunges us back to the time we were neanderthals

Congratulations on your OP. You just proved that we are heading back instead of heading forward. You are a true Conservative that is still living in the past and that has no ability to do anything new........

Theres some merit to your post but theres also some fundamental problems too.

Theres pros and cons with both ideologies and there is good and bad people within both.

Speaking for myself, what turns me off about the left is that they sometimes are hell bent on fixing things that are not broken and some of their solutions create bigger problems than what they are fixing.

I don't understand how the Left sustains their anger, frankly. The constant cynicism is destroying their very souls.

“The left”: That mysterious force of nature that can never reach equilibrium.
“Conservatives”: Always trying to fix others mistakes in order to keep the economy afloat so they can earn a paycheck.

IMO, the internet has distorted peoples perception of power. Look at what goes on here. But most of America is not hunched over a keyboard raging and most of America is not watching political TV. And they are not out trolling for how to get things for free. They know things cost money. After all, they are the ones who pay for the “free stuff”. They have seen that movie before.

Most of America is worrying about crime, their kids getting mixed up in drugs or becoming victims of crime. They are worried about health care and how to pay for it, and they are tired of ever spiraling state and local tax burdens, and they are still worried about losing their jobs due to handshake between an American CEO and a foreign sweatshop. American workers know they can be kicked to the curb in a heartbeat, and the government doesn’t care.

Did you have a momentary lapse of reason? Which of those qualities describes Trump? Maturity; his infantile tweets and kindergarten-level insults sort of refute that. Experience? None, politically, and a serial failure in business. Wisdom? Trump can't even spell it, let alone understand what wisdom is.

Another thing one needs to become a 'conservative' is willful ignorance.

Becoming conservative is a process of maturation, of acquiring experience, of gaining wisdom, and these days especially, of rejecting the self loathing and abnegation required of members of the left.

lol. I think it's rather the reverse nowadays. Modern day conservatives are no more adult and mature than their counterparts.

Probably in the same way that the right sustained their anger for 8 years under Obama.

You mean, like what Trump is doing now?

Probably in the same way that the right sustained their anger for 8 years under Obama.

Do you really think it's comparable? I've never seen an attempt to destroy a President like the Democrats are trying to destroy Trump-- and really anyone who gets in the way of their agenda. No, this is a whole new level of hate and anger.
What particularly sets this era of hate apart is that it's coming directly from our politicians and it's directed directed at American citizens. No, I don't recall Republicans going after citizens, painting them with epithets and putting them on hit lists.

Absolutely, you hit them where they live!

The Right did not have this militant type of hatred for the American public when Obama was in office. Nope. Did not happen.

You must not have been around when Clinton was in office, lol

It's a shame that Donald J. Trump never went through that process. Not that I would ever vote for a Democrat. For those of us playing the long game, someone should be thinking about detrumpifying the GOP after he leaves office.

For me the process meant moderating. I belonged to the John Birch Society when I was 15.

If you're referring to Clinton's impeachment, that was not a witch hunt. He lied under oath and obstructed justice. No comparable in any way.

You are right to a point but in the right's case then they were wrong and in the left's case and now they are right.

Obama was a man of dignity, honor, respect, and positive thinking while Trump is immoral, unethical, unprincipled, inhumane and a spreader of fear and hate.

It was very difficult for anyone with an open mind to hate Obama and it is very easy to hate Trump.

If a person respects you, it is difficult to hate him as you tend to give respect back. If a person disrespects you and call you "the worst he has ever seen", that bounces right back and hate is the end result.

Human emotions are raw and cannot be changed (only hidden) by the mind.

That's exactly what I meant.

If you agree, then you are calling yourself a hypocrite given that you are criticizing the left but condoning the same actions in Trump.
