I have looked for "political correctness" in the forum search und the more interesting topics were in the archives, where nobody can write any more.
What about political correctness in the English language?

What are the words one is no longer allowed to use?

Is there no more political correctness in the US now?

we now refer to it as "the N word"
before it was freely expressed
politically correct? certainly
beneficial and respectful? probably
an example of political correctness done right

"Political correctness is the elevation of sensitivity over truth."

---Bill Maher

"You don't get to be more offended than the person it was aimed at."

Somehow common decency towards one another became political correctness according to those on the right. It's called civility, something the right sorely lacks.

What about Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn?

Can the N-word be used in Mark Twain's books?

N or M

The Tragœdy of Othello, The Moore of Venice >>> in German: Othello, der Mohr von Venedig

What about the use of the word "Moore"?
In Germany "Mohr" has become controversial.

Its rampant. And it's ridiculous. It invests words with magic and then with the removal of magic words magically removes the thoughts and feelings from the minds and hearts of language-users.

Absolutely. It’s instructive
Reading those words will shock us today in a way that they did not at the time of the writing

generally, i've found that people who complain about political correctness are often just pissed off that they can't say racist / bigoted / misogynistic things in public without suffering personal consequences.

In America, there are no words that one is not allowed to use. There are words that are unwise to use. There are words that will likely make your life exponentially more difficult. There are words that are likely to offend others. But there are no banned words.

PC it the radical lefts attempt to silence free speech!!!! Nothing more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was not thinking of "banned by law".
I was thinking of "banned socially".

There are words that are likely to offend others.

Maybe there are "others" who like to feel offended so that they have a chance to complain and feel important?

I'm sure there are. I know some.

Every culture has words that are "socially banned," as they should. Political correctness is just another word for thinking about your audience before you open your mouth. I am 100% in favor of political correctness because without social enforcement of good manners, we run the risk of triggering government enforcement of good manners, which I am 100% against.

What about "Othello, the Moor of Venice" now?
Was Shakespeare a racist?

Should the title be: "Othello, the Afro-American of Venice" - to be politically correct?

No answer?

Well, here is the next question already:

Would a white actor be allowed to play Othello - or would that be "blackfacing" under the laws of PC?

As people form all over the world become more and more connected, so does our awareness of each other's sensitivities; I generally don't think it's a bad thing. As to the point about changing things from past literature to reflect modern sensibilities, I do not think we should go down that road. Literature captures the language and context of the time in which it was written, and that's valuable as insight into the society of the time.

In Germany, we are told not use the word "Zigeuner" for gypsy any more, but to use "Sinti & Roma".

And we are told not to use the word "Eskimo" any more, but "Innuit".

How is these in the USA or in other parts of the world?

Well, what about the word "Gypsy" now?

Political correctness is still here and is used to be civil, or used to downplay and mislead.

First of all there's no law against it, so no one's forced to be politically correct. If you want to be uncivil, hurtful and ostracized by everyone but your fellow reactionaries, be my guest to use terms like fag, or the N-word, it will expose you as an asshole. Times change and the labels and terms we use change, but some conservative never progress or get over it.

On the other hand some things never change. Do you believe that using politically correct terms like, 'an inaccurate refrain', or 'false or misleading claim', to describe blatant lies, ok? Are you unset that we now use, 'gay', to describe a homosexual? Are you ok with using a politically correct term like, 'racially charged', to describe a racist statement?

People can choose to be liars and racists, others can't choose their sexuality or skin color...

In San Francisco, there is lots of human feces on the streets, but there are no more convicted felons because now they are called "formerly incarcerated person". Just a very good example of PC insanity.
