President Trump Eyes a New Real-Estate Purchase: Greenland - WSJ

WASHINGTON—President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the deliberations, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.


Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition. It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.

Hmm... if AGW predictions are to be believed then acquiring a (near future?) more temperate (even tropical?) land mass may be a wise investment. ;)

I've always wanted to go there, I've been to Iceland a few times, before it got trendy. Problem was, flying standby there was really risky, the weather could drastically change and cancel flights and you are stuck, paying exorbitant hotel fees. Air Greenland used to fly A330 widebodies to Baltimore, they still have one that they fly from Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen, mostly they fly the Dash 8 which is a great cold weather/short runway plane. They also have lots of copters.

I would consider relocating to there if it were part of the US.

No worries. Trump couldn't find Greenland on a feckin map even if it was the only nation colored in green and highlighted with Day-Glo with direction markers.

Yup.
Northwest passage, the strategic location, fishing rights, unexploited mineral resources, sea drilling, more economically viable once they can grow their own food, etc. Once the ice melts, it could be a geo-political gold mine. Not a coincidence that the Chinese tried to make moves in Greenland a couple of years ago, like in Africa. Luckily Greenland's leadership was smart enough to realize that the Chinese didn't necessarily have their best interests at heart.

Another brilliant idea by Trump. We bought Manhattan for $24, I believe a huge chunk of the US from France, and Alaska from Russia. What we really need to do in order to solve the immigration problem is invade Central America and make it part of the US. Then all of these immigrants wouldn't have to make the perilous journey to the mainland. They would already be in the US. Let's bring Walmart and McDonalds to them, along with another Trump resort. It can be a golfing mecca. Until then, we'll settle for Greenland.

Once the ice melts millions of tons of methane will be released from the permafrost. Not somewhere I would want to be, frankly.
