Why did the shooter choose El Paso? I have a theory.

I'm thinking that if this was a hate crime, he chose El Paso because it is one of the only big cities in Texas that is blue and has a very large immigrant population, and thus not only did he have multiple immigrant targets but he had very little chance of encountering a citizen carrying a firearm due to the demographics of the area. If he would have tried this in his hometown area Walmart he may have been shot by a citizen very quickly. What does everyone think?

He said something to that extent in his manifesto about hitting softer targets so you may be correct.

El Paso?

I thought it was Dayton...

This is a national problem and requires national solutions that apply to the entire nation - all fifty states with no exceptions.

Something has to be done about psychopaths having weapons that can kill hundreds of people.

I support universal checks, etc. No gun seizure unless you have certain mental illnesses.

This is a public health crisis.

Serious question. What do you think a "Universal Check" would reveal? How do you reconcile a call for 'Universal Checks" as a solution when the reality is that the VAST MAJORITY of individuals that purchased the firearms used in mass shootings were subjected to and PASSED the background checks?

Further...

I assume you think these universal screenings will reveal people that are mentally unstable and represent a threat to themselves or others...correct?

Just another day in Trump's America. Glad I don't live there.

I believe HIPAA laws need to be changed with regard to firearm purchases so specific mental illnesses can be an automatic disqualifier.

Theres no reason someone who smokes weed should not be able to own a gun, but a paranoid schizophrenic with domestic violence charges can.

And do you agree that the mental health screening you suggest would imply that the individuals In question represent a threat to themselves or others?

Every big city in Texas is "blue" and have large immigrant population. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin... all of them.

That (bolded above) assertion is BS - big cities elsewhere in Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin) are blue and have sizable Hispanic (immigrant?) populations. I live in more rural part of the state but it is blue (due to gerrymandering - see link below) and it has a large (61%) Hispanic (immigrant?) population.

If the El Paso shooter is a registered Democrat and hates Trump he should be charged with a hate crime.

Yes, isn't it amazing that mass shootings only started the day Trump was elected?

Before Trump, no President encouraged them at "rallies". It's called "stochastic" terrorism. Like his second amendment solution for Hillary, he throws it out there safe in the knowledge that someone somewhere will pick it up and run with it, but he can not be directly connected.

And if the white nationalist posts Trump's name spelled out in guns on his facebook page, should he still be charged?

Stochastic terrorism: The use of mass public communication, usually against a particular individual or group, which incites or inspires acts of terrorism which are statistically probable but happen seemingly at random.

And Trump is guilty of that? It's hyperbole like this that just makes me sit back in wonder. Given the pure hatred that the CNN's of the world spew at Trump, I assume you will hold them responsible if someone tries to kill Trump. Yeah, right.

Groups like Hezbollah spell their name out in the shape of a machine gun, but you refuse to blame their ideology on the mayhem they commit. Pick a lane.

Absolutely. We have decades of evidence about these shooters and the mental health issues that trend toward these shootings.

Some states have implemented this stuff sure. But I think we need to include medications on that list also. We know some medications are an indicator for potential behavior at a later date.

bingo

Except that it's completely unfactual.

Did you see those people standing around on the news? Sorry, they don't look like the Gun carrying types

And it is factual that El Paso is now 85% Hispanic?

Wow!

How do you think people end up in secure mental hospitals? Could it be because qualified professionals have deemed them to be dangerous, potentially or in fact?

The frequency went up drastically. During the 8 years of Obama, there were 9 mass shoots. During the first 30 months of Trump, there have been 8.
