Bill Kristol, no liberal is he, points to an interesting slip.

Trump: "I don't believe the four Congresswomen are capable of loving our country." "Are capable" is the tell. This isn't garden-variety (if deplorable) partisan demagoguery. This is racial and religious bigotry. For what characteristics make them incapable of loving our country?

Bill Kristol

Maybe someone who understands the mind of the Donald can explain this away.

Wow, didn't take long for the alleged "love it or leave it" to turn into "these 4 bitches aren't capable of loving it so they need to be sent packing". Trump's verbal porn for racists has to keep getting more and more extreme otherwise it won't produce the same high.

It's hard to take someone who's been bashing America and attacking the Constitution for years seriously. Trump really hates this country and everything it stands for, which is why he's trying to change it into his image.

he needs them to show up and vote for him, so he throws them candy. if he disavows racism in any genuine way (which he can't, as he is a racist himself,) he loses votes that he won't make up on the other side. those among his base who might not be racists will overlook his racism, as he pisses off the libs, and that's what's important.

You guys are out of your minds. TDS has gone from lunacy to just plain idiocy.

Trump's strategy is to characterize his political opponents as hating the motherland. It's fascism 101.

I think it would be an impossible task to explain anything to triggered liberal progressives.

Should people expect liberals to be commanded to take "good morning" as a racist tell? Good? You mean Good as in good for white people...........

How about when ordering coffee? Will "just Black" be a tell for something more evil?

Not sure why settling Mars is considered such a stretch.

Clearly there are people living there already.

Trump can't point out single harmful thing, because those women are against corruption and trying to make something meaningful and good. Trump is just an hate thrower and his base is swallowing all of it. If you're against those women you should think twice if you're ready to dump everything what they're saying / doing - be careful what you count as trash. I know you can say things like "they are anti-american", but if everything what these woman presents is bad what it mean?

Yep, Republicans are loyal. He doesn't lose many Republicans by being nativist or racist or Islamaphobic. He can pick up some independents or people who never vote who are excited by his arguments.

Most of his base don't even know who these women are or what they said or did.

His handlers have been trying to get him to temper his overt racism and stick to dog whistles like: Love it or leave it, communists, patriots, UnAmrerican, etc.

By midday Monday, the Republican battle to minimize the damage was unfolding on two fronts. The first was an effort to get Trump to shift his message, without admitting a mistake. The goal, said one senior White House aide, was to “get the message back to a place where we could defend the president.”

The idea was to argue that the four congresswomen hated America and were welcome to leave for that reason. There were other lines of attack as well...

I see that is working out well.

Why do you hate America, a country of immigrants? Why don't you go back where you came from? (I'm using Trump's tactic)

I don't think you're capable of loving America (again illustrating Trump's tactic)

Come up with a better argument. That one was terrible.

Try explaining why these women are "incapable" of loving our country. I'll wait.

Was Omar telling the truth when she said American soldiers killed thousands of her countrymen?

I don't hate the US. Show me where I've ever said I hate the US. Every single person living in the United States is an immigrant.

But thanks for the laughable tantrum and meaningless drivel.

It certainly puts you in the appropriate light.

NOTE TO OP!

Bill Kristol is one of the original NeverTrumpers. He despises Trump and has from day one!
So nice try but again a major fail.

Provide a quote, with a link, and I'll let you know.

given the polarization that he has accelerated, i doubt that there are a ton of people who haven't made their minds up about him at this point. for him, the strategy is to keep the base that he has and to motivate them to show up. by being openly racist, he keeps the stormfronters on the team and even keeps the non-racists motivated and engaged in their effort to tirelessly defend him and to create alternate realities in which he is not a racist.

Being an overt asshole piece of **** is the new normal in the GOP

Well, you just demonstrated that 'Trumps tactic' isnt racist. Unless, of course, you are racist.

How so? It was spot on. Perfection.

The triggered left have become so disconnected from reality, "are capable" is now a racist term.

That's about as funny and defining as anything I could imagine.

As your post clearly demonstrates, thats not something exclusive to the GOP. Not by a long shot.

Kristol isn't a liberal, but he certainly is a Trump hater. Not surprising he'd pile on Trump along with all the other Dems and Trump haters.

The fervent Never-Trumper Bill Kristol appeared on This American Life podcast’s latest episode ‘The Wannabees’.

“If I were a Democrat, I would call me up and say, here’s a lot of money for a primary challenge against Donald Trump.” –– Bill Kristol

The episode goes through aspects of the 2020 presidential election, focusing on the Democrat primaries and lack of Republican challengers to the sitting President.

Back when he helped start the Weekly Standard, Kristol stood alongside many he now fights against. He recently helped start a new publication, The Bulwark. But he remains better known for being anti-Trump than The Bulwark’s editor at large.
