Trump may be smarter than some have given him credit for.

Over the past few days, Trump waded into the spat between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib — “the Squad.” The fight between the Democratic leadership and the group of progressives was getting out-of-hand, with accusations of racism and increasing inflammatory sniping from anonymous aides. Trump, in a blaze of tweets, neatly united the Democrats at a moment when their divisions threatened to deepen into schisms. Now, instead of fighting with each other, House Democrats are voting to censure the president for racist remarks...

But in unifying House Democrats against him, Trump unified them around the Squad, and raised their profile — the four women are getting even more coverage this week than they were last week, exactly what Pelosi was trying to avoid, and exactly what conservative media has been trying to achieve

...“The Dems were trying to distance themselves from the four ‘progressives,’ but now they are forced to embrace them,” Trump tweeted. “That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA! Not good for the Democrats!”

This whole fracas began with Pelosi trying to push the Squad off center stage. It ended with them yet more in the spotlight. And that reflects a core dimension of the Squad’s notoriety: not the retweets and support they receive on the left, but the constant promotion and demonization they receive from the right. This was always the flaw in Pelosi’s plan: whatever she said to the New York Times, she wasn’t going to push the Squad out of the spotlight, because the voters she’s most concerned about aren’t following Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter feed, they’re feeling the reverberations of Fox News.
Why Donald Trump wants to fight Ocasio-Cortez, not Nancy Pelosi - Vox

So according to this VOX "report," Trump's tweet was designed to push "The Squad" into the forefront of the Democratic Party, making them the FACE of the Party.

This was something Pelosi was desperately trying to defray because she knew it was poison to Party election plans. Now she and the Democrats are forced into "The Squad's" public support.

It appears that Trump knew what he was doing with that tweet. Playing 4-D chess like a master.

Another videographer goes even further, asserting that Trump had an even deeper plan:

I included the entire video because it points to something in the "statistics" presented in the VOX report that show intentional misrepresentation of the AXIOS poll done by the DNC discussing how poisonous "The Squad" is to Democratic election chances. (Starting at 10:50 in the video).

But this video also points out (starting at 13:50) that Trump's tweet and the storm following it pushed his Executive Order regarding asylum restrictions off the top news in favor of the "racist tweet" narrative.

Whether you agree with the second video or not, it does appear that Trump "played" the media like a drum. It does explain that tweet and it's firestorm effects.

So you are saying Trump abandoned any sense of morality to score political points? You sure you want to go with that argument?

Yep, Trump is cheering on the demorats as they more rapidly become the NASCAR party - turn left, go really fast and give the fans some spectacular wrecks to enjoy. ;)

Yep. that works for me. The Dems threw morality out of the house long before Clinton got there. I love my amoral bastard.

'NASCAR party' ? LOL, that's so good to deserve a 'Like'. Cheers and kudos! (and the truth).

LOL. That was VOX's argument, or didn't you READ the Vox story?

I think both of these reports have some merit.

That does not mean I agree with Trump's tweet. But if you are honest, it is a fairly Machiavellian play on the part of Trump; taking heat he shrugs off as usual in exchange for posting an outlandish tweet in order to achieve his goals.

Seems highly likely that it'll work too, as the more moderate Democrats, including Pelosi (more moderate barely), are now defending the progressive extremists, uniting behind them, so, yeah, now the face of the Democrat party nationally.

Hmm... was the end result not loads of more media exposure for "the squad'? Politicians have long sense abandoned morality - see the Clintons.

Ah, so conservatives and republicans are not to blame for their actions, it is all the fault of democrats. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past.

So you can excuse being low class if it is politically expedient. Noted.

That is a strategy of insanity.

What he has done with his Tweets is give crediblity to the allegations Democrats have made that the Republican party harbors racism, while unifying a party that was fractured, at a time when that same party is about to have a de-facto impeachment hearing against him.

Now, campaign commercials around the country will not be talking about "SOCIALISM!" like Republicans think they will (not everyone watches FOXnews), they'll instead be discussing his Tweets and, yes, some people who were previously unconvinced ARE going to be persuaded he's a racist - the Tweets speak for themselves.

Trump makes stupid tweet. Your response: "but the Clintons..."

This thread is a discussion of how stupid that particular Trump tweet will likely turn out to be. There seems to be a wisdom (and patriotism?) vacuum among "the squad" easily rivaling that of Trump. Keep in mind that most of the newest demorats in congress are not in political alignment with "the squad" (open the borders and eliminate DHS and ICE) and will need to remind voters in their districts of that fact - they are not in 'safe' seats like Pelosi is. Remember that "the squad" is only about 10% of the demorat freshman class in congress.

Trump reminds me of what I read of Nixon's history. The left/Democrats went absolutely berserk over Nixon in his first term. The result was a HUGE fight in the Democratic Party, for which the leftwing won. Nixon then absolutely slaughtered the Democrats in the general election - but then in his 2nd term Nixon resigned to avoid being formally removed by Congress.

Could history be repeating itself? IMMIGRATION is Trump's winning issue with a majority of Americans. But for the Democratic Primary, the candidates have no choice but to battle over which of them more cries for and will give more to illegal immigrants?

The fake outrage of Democrats doesn't work except in their ever shrinking increasingly radical echo chamber of themselves. President Trump said absolutely NOTHING about anyone's race. It is ONLY the radically racist Democratic Party that sees everyone as only a race. Either a person is pure white or they are inferior, defenseless people needing pure white Democrats and super rich white corporate fascists to protect them.

I am not a fan of "the squad", but that does not make what Trump said any more OK. When you start to excuse what people do based on their politics, when you divert and spin what they say, you move into the realm of being nothing but a political hack. You are better than that. Don't go down that road.

I did not, and will not, vote for (cut federal taxes and raise federal spending) Trump. I'm not saying what Trump tweeted was OK - I'm just agreeing with the OP that it may well work to Trump's political benefit in the long run. My congress critter is Lloyd Doggett, thanks to being in a gerrymandered district, and I vote against him in every election.

“Trump doing stupid thing (X) is actually quite smart because of crap we’ll make up now as a vein attempt to excuse its idiocy”.

It’s a ploy that’s used by his cultists again and again and again and it’s absolutely full of ****.

And one of those wrecks was that "Chaos in the House" today.

I bet Pelosi is PISSED!!

One of your own agrees with the OP.

With his deliberate, racist outburst, @realDonaldTrump wants to raise the profile of his targets, drive Dems to defend them and make them emblematic of the entire party.
It’s a cold, hard strategy.

It won't work to his political benefit.

His Tweet was blantantly racist - we all know it. Telling dark complected women who were born in this nation to "go back to your home country!" is a wonderful way to come out of the closet as a racist. Lots of people who were willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt before are going to now be convinced that he is indeed a racist.

The Democrats condemming him in a resolution was smart politics on their part, because they will now be able to repeatedly go back to this moment in 2020, with all the Republicans on record with their support.

Why should only the Republicans be “moral”?
Because they yammer on and on about "values" and how theirs must be made law in America.

When you stand against gay marriage, yet won't condem an openly racist statement, your party is in serious trouble.

What could be seen as being more important for the House to be doing? ;)

How about some of this stuff...

The debt ceiling needs to be raised.

Spending appropriations bills need to be resolved.

Immigration laws need to be fixed.

The border is in crisis.

Infrastructure spending needs to be resolved.

The USMCA needs to be ratified.

I don't know if you've been paying attention but Trump is not very bright. People overanalyze the stuff he does. He just says whatever is on his mind and there is just not much mind there. There is no three-dimensional chess. All he's has achieved is strengthening the argument that he's a racist. He's insulted millions of naturalized citizens.
