The meaning of the term "American"

Let's say I'm a US citizen. My political views are that I want the US to be just like Venezuela. Are my views considered "American" simply because I'm a citizen of America?

No your views are not considered "American". They are considered the views of one American. Don't try to bootstrap your views into some greater credibility by calling them "American views" simply because you happen to be American. To the limited extent any view can be considered "American" in nature, it must derive from the nation's principles. Yet, what we really have there is a collection of views about what the nation's principles are with various groups pompously trying to claim exclusive rights to define said principles.

Really, you should stop focusing on trying to bootstrap views into credibility and incredibility by labeling them. Just address the views.

I know, it's asking a lot on a debate board where the sole point for the vast majority of posters is to score a quick Internets Point and jump thread.

The problem with "addressing the views" is that when those views are espoused by a "person of color", being against those views is considered racist.

All that 'American' means to me is that I live in North America, not Central or South America, but North America. It makes me an American. If I was traveling abroad and someone asked me where I'm from, I'd say that I'm from the United States, I wouldn't say, 'America' because that's not really a specific location, it could be anyplace - North, South or Central.

No offensive to either of you as I do agree

But it is funny to see 2(now 3) Canadians commenting on what it means to be American

According to my map, Canada is in America. ;)

We built a channel between the US and Canada, we are now an island, that is keeping us safe from the craziness that is Trump and his supporters. It is like there is something in the water
