Who do you think was the worst American president in history?

I'm having trouble picking just one because I consider it a tie between Woodrow Wilson and George W. Bush. I feel both of these presidents implemented policies that have caused long lasting damage to our country. I'm still baffled that Wilson was considered a great president at one point in time.

Wilson had his flaws, as did many of his time (see his comments on "Birth of a Nation"), but if countries, including ours, had listened to his counsel on the League of Nations or the Treaty of Versailles, we might not have had Hitler.

How is this country in much better shape? Is it because millionaires are making more millions thanks to their generous tax cut? Is it because more people are working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to make ends meet? But, it makes the jobless numbers look good. Is it in better shape because our health plans may be cut any minute leaving millions without insurance?

The United States is a 'brand' and our brand has always been leader of the free world, defender of the oppressed and benefactor to the poor, and a country of immense power. Other countries respected the fact that the US was always there, the first country to step in and help allies. Now we're not seen the same way globally, not at all. While China and Russia laugh at us, we've definitely gone off the rails with our allies. We've lost the distinguished legacy we've always had as the greatest country on earth. Others see the US as being led by a bully and a liar, they view us as a country that doesn't honor accords or stand shoulder to shoulder with allies against global enemies. They see us as a country that's divided along racial lines whose people display hatred for minorities and immigrants.

That has been no US president in history that has so deeply degraded the position of the USA in the eyes of the world as Trump has.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Truman or Bush.

Probably bush

Yes, Bush so far. His administration got us into those two endless wars. Iraq, for no reason whatsoever at the expense of trillions of dollars and 10's of thousands of lives and as a result, a much more unstable Mid-East. If anyone deserves to burn eternally it's Bush, Cheney and the rest of his administration's neocon/chicken hawks.

My chronological list...

5 worst by personal character:

Washington
Jefferson
Jackson
JFK
Clinton

5 worst by presidential deed:

AJohnson
Truman
LJohnson
Nixon
Bush II

Lincoln is not on the list of worst by deed, as while he was a monster, he was a monster by circumstance, faced with an impossible, inevitable, and long-delayed conflict.

Trump won't likely be on any lists, best or worst, as he's not really into war crime, and is basically just another instrument of the plutocracy, albeit in a loose cannon fashion which displeases them greatly.

Both Johnsons were horrendous; both Top 10 Worst, if not Top 5.

LBJ was horrible on foreign policy with the tragedy of Vietnam & invasion of the Dominican Republic, but great domestically: civil rights, voting rights, Medicare, fighting poverty etc. That legacy endures over 50 years later. Just look at the transformation the Voting Rights Act created. He undid much of what the first Johnson made or allowed to happen.

Trump not really into war crime? "Take out their families," was his strategy for dealing with our enemies. War Crimes 101. We hanged Germans for that. And, of course, proposing torture worse than waterboarding. Didn't we hang Japanese for that? In fairness to your post, however those comments could simply be part of his loose-cannon hood.

The 'stable genius', the look on his face minus the BS that came out of his mouth after they reappeared from their long private 'meeting' is just one example of why he's the worst, and his time on his imaginary throne isn't even over yet. Anyone with a short memory, watch the video of when he reappears to stand at the podium with one of his heroes/lovers.

Indeed - Trump's bark is one thing; his bite has yet to significantly manifest.

If it does, he might well make a worst list...

Hand's down, Wilson.

The ancestors of James Buchanan send thanks to Donald Trump for taking the bottom spot. The absolute worst individual to gain the office, however it was managed, is DJT.

Yes stop throwing down bs. I agree.

Shrub jr destabilized the middle east and killed a million people

And handed Obama an economy in freefall.

I adored Bush ... but I have to admit that.

Definitely tough. I don't really care much about the ones back in the 1800s, though, so I think I'm looking at a three way tie between the triad of Republican goons -

Reagan, W Bush, and Trump

Time may tell that either Bush or Trump will beat Reagan, but he set a high bar.

No one in the last 100 years is close. Jimmy Carter, sterling example of humanity and truly dreadful President probably takes it for that period. However, the post Civil War period was one dreadful President after another. Then there is Buchanan who has been mentioned repeatedly.

LBJ - Vietnam, enough said right there.

JEC - Oversaw the worse economy since the Depression.

BO - Oversaw the worse economy since JEC. Corrupt to the core, weaponized the IRS, corrupted the DOJ, FBI. A real piece of work.

Everything in your post is wrong.

Nixon was clearly worse on Vietnam and more than LBJ; you don't understand the economy or Carter's role for him; BO took office in the BUSH crash and the economy recovered, he was not 'corrupt', the IRS scandal was a Republican lie, he did not corrupt the DOJ and FBI.

Friendly reminder that user DamnYankee is a reality-denying, dishonest actor.

All of them that were after George Washington

I've noticed he's one of those who practically everything he says is wrong.

I've been watching US politics since the Kennedy era, and I would have to cite Nixon and Trump (who doesn't deserve the appellation 'president'), and Trump leads the field by a mile. He couldn't govern a sand pit.

I would not put him in charge of filling a septic tank.
