I'm afraid the Trump presidency has permanently scarred the national character. Things that were unthinkable before he got to the White House, are now seen as business as usual. Once so many bad precedents have been started, it will be hard to get back to the higher standards we had before. Copycats and all sorts of bad political actors will continue this behavior in the future. We've been transformed from a great democratic republic with a system of checks and balances, into a Banana Republic.
And the funny thing is that Trump isn't even a conservative and deep inside he is probably not the biggest hater and racist out there (previous actions and statements, while by no means indicating that he wasn't the jerk that he is, didn't suggest that he was this rabid). I believe that everything he does is politically calculated. As a good communicator and as a man who has a lot of social smarts (Trump is not dumb as some people believe) he figured that the way to win the 2016 election and the way to govern and secure support for his self-aggrandizing interests (not to forget, also his interests in fostering his business and enhancing his fortune), was to appeal to fear of the Other, and to the worst instincts of a segment of the US population. He proceeded to destroy Obama's legacy because he knows nothing delights the conservatives more than that, and he fanned the flames of racism and xenophobia because he knows that nothing revs up his base more than that.
The man is very smart and dangerous, and it is not excluded that he will manage to continue his and his family's grip on power, like the Berlusconi years in Italy. The man is a menace to our democracy. It is essential to defeat him in 2020, but it won't be easy.
