When JFK campaigned in West Virginia, he was shocked by the poverty, and pledged his first executive order would be to increase food assistance for them. Because those are Democratic Party values, the good of people, and especially caring for those who are poorer.

Today's rural citizen seems unable to understand that they ARE those people the Democrats care about; they think the people Democrats care about are 'urban black people' and 'illegal immigrants' and they resent the help for them, instead of thinking of it as caring for them as well.

And that leaves them the victims of con men, who serve billionaire interests to manipulate these rural voters into supporting the plutocrats.

And this is reinforced day in and day out by propaganda media. The liars scream 'fake news' about the people telling the truth, and these rural citizens fall for the lie.

Democrats want jobs, higher work incomes, healthcare for everyone, education, and other things good for the people that benefit these rural citizens. Republicans want corporate profits, at the expense of jobs, the environment, power for the people, worker income and well-being, healthcare, education, and other things that benefit the people.

But it's not clear how to help these rural citizens to understand who is on their side economically, and who is out to screw them while conning them that they're on their side. That right-wing media bubble, that 'good ole boy' politician who knows how to lie well as they serve the rich, are hard to overcome. And so the rural voters remain conned and loving the con men while they get screwed.

They just can't view other human beings as fell human beings, but only as enemies they want to see have nothing, wrongly thinking that benefits them.

Even when they are the targets - like red states turning down Medicaid expansion to their own states while Democrats get more healthcare - they still cheer it. Democrats tried to get them more healthcare, making that universal; Republicans fought it and now millions of Republicans go without.

The rural farmer and land owners doesn't think the EPA is on their side.

The rural gun owner doesn't the ATF is on their side.

The rural religious person doesn't think the Supreme Court is on their side.

The rural pickup truck or SUV driver doesn't think the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the EPA are on their side.

The rural small business person doesn't think the IRS is on their side.

The rural fisherman, hunter, rec vehicle owner, and general sportsmen doesn't think the national park service or BLM or EPA is on their side.

The rural homestead builder doesn't think any regulatory government agency is on their side.

The rural parent doesn't think the Education Dept. is on their side.

And the rural inhabitant certainty doesn't think any Malibu liberal or San Francisco Democrat or Hollywood "progressive" is on their side.

So why the hell should the party that always sides with the EPA, NPS, BLM, NHTSA, IRS, Education Dept., and every other regulatory agency wonder why they don't kneel in appreciation?

Get a clue.

A decent agricultural plan that promotes and supports small to mid sized farms

Well all i can say is right wing propaganda is very effective.

Republicans have labled the democrats as the party of the minority. No self respecting rural white male is going to vote for a democrat.

The way to change that is to fight fire with fire. Show what Republicans really fight for in legislation not their campaign rhetoric. Bear the heart of the party and what it has done to America's working/middle class. Drag it all out there for the world to see. Explain why they fight for lower taxes for the rich and why they want to reduce regulations. Show them that all this hoopla about illegal immigration is just campaign rhetoric that will be forgotten as soon as the election is over.

Democrats need to leave their coal alone

If it wasn't for that WV would be a BLUE state

Well, most Dems aren't for them. A few, like Bernie and AOC and them are, but Joe Biden doesn't give a ****. Nancy Pelosi doesn't give a ****.

Time to vote out all of the people who supported Hillary, or anyone who voted for the Iraq War, anyone who refuses to support the impeachment of Trump.

For rural people to see Democrats as being on their side, the Democrats would need to actually be on their side.

JFK was the last Democratic President to actually care about Americans. Look what happened to him.

So basically you're saying the rural republicans are convinced anything the government does is bad. Wonder where they got that idea? Maybe from reagan years ago? Government bad, taxes bad. The government is the problem not the solution. And so election after election they still buy into that line of crap and continue to vote against their own best interests in favor of some republican promising them the moon and delivering nothing.

People don't "get their idea" from a politician; the politician reflects what they believe or want to believe before he or she utters a syllable. And the idea comes from the people's everyday experience, alienation from urban values, and their own cultural values. For all the reasons I gave (and the following poster gave) the rural folks have lost the faith that many had under FDR or Truman. The Democratic party abandoned them for identity politics, and made the white, the straight, and the male the villains of contemporary society. The rural folk are no more happy with Tim Cooke, George Soros, Mark Zuckerberg, and a dozen other elites that they were with Republican rich and professional class of the 1930s.

That the op author is "shocked" that these people see life differently, perhaps he ought to pack his bags and go to these places and open is closed ears. I did, for 10 years, and it corrected every brain dead west coast stereotype I had acquired.

Become Conservatives. That's what it would take.

Today's rural citizen seems unable to understand that they ARE those people the Democrats care about;

The problem is that along with rural White poverty comes rural White racism. The racism is a stronger political motivation than the poverty. It's not like Republicans are going to take away their food stamps. Republicans know that they can't win if they run on what they believe about entitlements.

To answer the question in the header, it would have to be true. It isn't.

Democrats are not on Rural American's side. To the contrary, Democrats mock and belittle rural Americans.

Define conservative

Pro-2A, pro-limited government, pro-stop trying to control me. Stop telling me I can't drive a pick-up, stop killing my job, etc.

No it isn't. If it ever was, it was back when Jim Crow ruled. Now it's just political spin to keep from dealing with rural issues.

What would it take for rural America to understand Democrats are 'on their side', not Republicans?

What would it take? Leave office for starters.

Let's see. Well, first off Gov. Grusmome Newsome and his merry band of leftist thieves just jacked up the cost of gasoline/diesel/LPG .06 on the gallon. That hurts working families and lower income folks the most. Rural folks heat their homes with LPG.

And then of course there's the income tax increase. And then there's an added tax Kal Fire slapped rural people with, and then there's free education law to illeagals just signed by Grusome. And that's just in Kalifornia. Rural people enjoy their freedoms that leftists desire to strip away.

Leftists love robbing people of their labor.

I get the point that you're trying to smear "a party" with nothing but innuendo and zero facts.

ALL AmeriCANs should turn to the Democratic Part that has their back on equal opportunity and wealth distribution …

… that wants to invest in America and AmeriCANs

That wants an end to special tax breaks and loopholes for the wealthiest people ever to live on earth and use the revenue to bring down the deficit and invest in America.

There's about 25 lines worth of facts there, pal. None so blind as those mindlessly dedicated to not seeing.

In many ways you are right in your OP regarding Democrats are for the poor and middle class and many Republicans fit into that category. I too have scratched my head why rural American supports the rich so much given that mostly they are not rich (they are poor).

I read up on this and found that there are basically 4 things that rural America is for and the Democrats are against and it isn't the pocket book.

Here is what keeps Rural America Republican.

1) Guns
2) Abortion
3) Oil and Coal
4) Race

Rural America is all about guns and no restrictions to them. Democrats want Gun control. Rural America is against Abortion and the Democrats are for womens rights to their bodies. Rural America is about protecting the few industries that help feed them, such as oil and coal, and the Democrats are for the environment, last of all, Rural America is still racist given that there is very little mixing of races in Rural America and therefore they do not feel any closeness to anyone not of their own. This racism is not all about color but mostly about anyone not of their own. Since most of them are White, they want to stay White.

In thinking about this, I can understand why they feel this way and feel so strongly given that they have very little contact with anything different. It is mostly the knowledge their fathers and grandfathers gave them and little else. This mentality will not change because they know nothing else. They know what they know but don't know what they don't know. With thinking like this, change is bad and why libertarians are so bad to them. Libertarians are all about knowledge and change and Rural America is afraid and does not know how to cope with change since they never have had to change.

It is a complex problem that has no easy solution.

No your views are distorted by your political bias. Poor people don't necessarily want a big government that gives them handouts. They don't necessarily trust the government or want to become dependent on it. Some poor people want a healthy economy, and some care more about freedom than government handouts.

Most conservatives believe that free enterprise is what creates jobs, and that jobs are what get people out of poverty. That seems obvious. Not all conservatives love big corporations. Our capitalist system is supposed to protect us from monopolies, but unfortunately it doesn't. I don't think conservatives are generally in favor of giant monopolies.

Maybe those rural Americans see through the bull**** the Dems try to peddle and see actual results from those big bad Republicans. And they see some self-important, loony lefties pontificating that they know more about what's good for ordinary Americans than they themselves do. Look at this post - condescending, we-know-better, what's wrong with you rubes, don't you know we're your superiors.
