Next month it will be 50 years

So, it's all Obama's fault that we never went back to the moon. If memory serves correctly, we went to the moon in '69 and Obama was born in '64, which means he was five at the time, so it's been his fault since he was five years old that we never went back.

Well, now we have a MAGA president who will get us not just to the moon, but to Mars as well! He understands well that the moon is a part of Mars, so he'll advise the new Space Corps on how to get there. We can't rely on NASA any more, because, as you know, they're part of the great climate change hoax, and so not to be trusted.

To infinity (or at least to the moon) and beyond! It could be a new political slogan for Buzz...er Trump.

In 2009 he was 45 years old.I do blame him.

Too bad that was a full 5 years after GWB canned the shuttle program, eh?

For the record, I don't blame GWB for this either. That was the planned end date for the program from it inception. I think the failure here was that NASA didn't forsee future administrations (both Democratic and Republican) continually defunding further research into a vehicle to replace the shuttle. They made the assumption that government interest in space exploration would continue at the rate it had post Apollo.

They were wrong.

you sure bout that, according to the Dems and the Mayans we only have twelve years left

That's the end of us, not the moon. :)

When did the countdown start? I don't believe we have a full 12 years ahead of us. A freshman member of the house is not coming to the rescue with a screwdriver in her hand.

i wouldn’t even let that girl blow me.

Next month it will be 50 years since men walked on the moon. Right now 50 years later, thanks to Obama we cant even put a man in low earth orbit.

Any democrat want to explain why.

People forget that a big part of Obama's legacy is that he killed NASA.

:lamo

For eight ****ing years you people screamed "STOP TALKING ABOUT BUSH!" That's why!

As for the OP's ignorance, perhaps he should google who scheduled the end of the Shuttle program before a replacement was in place. ;)

Nobody said stop talking about Bush. People said stop blaming Bush.

There is a big difference between the two.

He was black?

You don’t get it: everything is Obama’s fault. If not his, then it’s Hillary’s.

Especially when his administration actually did the thing he is being accused of.

Don't you mean thanks to George W. Bush, who was the President who announced the end to the space shuttle in a speech in 2004, 4 full years before Obama took office?

So, no desire for intellectual honesty I see.

Was it set in stone when Obama was in office?

The end of the shuttle program was set in stone from its inception. This is common knowledge. The funny thing is that it was actually extended by a year UNDER OBAMA to allow for the last things needed on the ISS....but make no mistake, the plug had basically been pulled 4 years prior to that.

As I stated in an earlier post...its quite likely that NASA misjudged thier hand and thought that the fervor of space exploration post Apollo would ensure that there would be funding for projects to come up with a replacement for the shuttle before the deadline they set. It just so happens they turned out to be wrong.

Fun, the Republicans, massively interested in privatization, are criticizing Obama for going towards privatization.

Let's try this.

50 years ago the US put a man on the Moon, and can't even have a single payer healthcare system.

People forget that a big part of Obama's legacy is that he killed NASA.

Only in the minds of conservatives who never want thier guy to take responsibility for his actions.

For everyone else, we can simply recall when GWB basically put the nail in that coffin.

Barack Obama: Nasa must try to make Muslims 'feel good'
No wonder we are so far behind in space travel

you really got a boner for Muslims dont ya?

So what's the ISS doing if it isn't in a low earth orbit? It has been continuously inhabited, including by Americans, since 2000.

Wow. Obama was in office 8 of those 50 years, and hasn't been in office for the last 2 1/2. I didn't realize it until your post. Obama is obviously the most powerful man to ever occupy the Oval Office. 40 years before he took office and 2 1/2 years after he left, he still controls everything.

You are on another thread complaining about "free" education.

So let me get this straight, you think going into space is a bigger priority to invest our money than education, or no?

When there are less and less opportunities due to you not wanting to hand out "free education" where exactly are all these educated people who can get us to the moon going to come from?

lol...you're expecting too much, if you're looking for continuity of logic. I think our friend here simply takes his shot when he can take them - this isn't about space exploration this is about talking smack. Had Obama put a person on the moon, it would have been a colossal waste of money, sure sign of incompetence, and somehow outing Obama as a terrorist. ;)

I mean, this isn't entirely accurate, although your first main point definitely is. We didn't need to do it to beat the Russians anymore, so it lost priority. Nothing in America gets done quickly unless it's about war.

That said, especially back in the 70s and 80s, there would have been virtually no way for us to handle building any kind of permanent residence on the moon. Remember that the moon doesn't have an atmosphere, so there is constantly radiation and micrometeorites and stuff that would damage anything we trying to setup for long periods of time. By the mid to late 90s, when we were doing the space station, we definitely had the technology to handle some of that. The fact that we basically stopped our ambition at the space station was really the downfall in my mind. The space station could be so much more than it is.

Ooh, gee, the moon doesn't have an atmosphere? Really? Wow, that explains everything! </sarcasm>

(Sorry, but that was kind of insulting on your part.)

We had the technology to send men up there and bring them home safely, and we had the technology to build a safe habitat. What we didn't have at the time was the knowledge that there was water ice up there. That wasn't discovered until 2009, so prior to that discovery, we would have needed to send a lot of oxygen up along with the people who would need to breathe it. I don't think that was undoable, nor protection from radiation during solar flare activity.
