That makes absolutely no sense. If...Vlad had something on Trump, why would he allegedly retaliate at all, or let the NYT in on it?

Do you people want to escalate foreign relations to the point of what? Yeah, ok, we know, but Putlin. But Trump.
Just imagine if it were Hillary sitting on the throne and the NYT leaked such information, however true it may be. That's the point, not the sheer hatred for Trump.
Trump will be gone in 2 or 6 more years. Lets make sure that this "everything goes as long as we can stick it to Trump" mentality doesn't come back to haunt us.

Um....maybe because the Pentagon wanted the story leaked? As a warning to Putin? Who knows if it's even true, it could just be an elaborate plan to have Russia was a **** load of resources tracking down non-existent malware.

But hey, you obviously know top level Pentagon officials, and know this isn't the case for a fact. And you must also have top level security clearance to be getting this information.

Or the Pentagon wants this story leaked, either as a warning, or because in reality there is no such malware, and they want Russia to waste a bunch of resources finding it.

I think the Pentagon may have fabricated it. A great way to have them waste a bunch of assets looking for imaginary malware. True or not, they have no choice but to investigate, and if the CIA has managed to get just one or two indicators in place, Russia is going to have to devote a lot of resources to this. No way they can take a chance on having their power grid at risk.
