US embassies defy Trump administration orders not to fly LGBT+ flags

The facades of the US missions in Seoul and Chennai, India, are partially hidden behind large rainbow flags, while the embassy in New Delhi is aglow in rainbow-coloured lights.

The website for the embassy in Santiago, Chile, shows a video of the chief diplomat raising a rainbow flag last month for the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

The Vienna Embassy’s website features a photo of a rainbow flag flying below Old Glory on a mast jutting from the building, a statement by Diplomats for Equality and a story about a professor lecturing on the visibility and growth of LGBT+ rights.

The gay agenda strikes again

Better, they said, to not even discuss LGBT+ issues publicly and risk the consequences of drawing attention to themselves.

“We fly below the radar,” one employee said. “We survive because they don’t realise we’re here.”

That's how it should be.

The State Department isn't a social justice organization. Their job isn't to support one group or another. Their job is to support the entire country.

The State Department shouldn't care if an employee is whatever...just whether they are doing their State Department job.

Keep your private life to yourself when you go to work.

It is not a good sign when American ambassadors decide to defy the president's orders, no matter who the president happens to be at the time.

Good, screw Trump and his 'orders'.

Screw the rightwing christainists

Except if you're straight and married, there is no need to be subtle.

Maybe we could make a deal that we will stop talking about it at work, as soon as conservative Christians shut up about their religion at work.

I think the BS flag needs to hoisted on this dog whistle.

There is no proof of any orders not to fly the flag. Just a list of anonymous "state department" ghosts making claims in stories from known Trump hating news organizations. There is also some Christian hate references related to Pompeo.

I followed every link in every article starting from the OP.

If this were really true, why would people be insubordinate and basically fire themselves?

Does that make sense?

No, it doesn't.

Bull**** flag up the pole.

Human rights is a very important part of the State Department's mission.

This president looks upon human rights with disdain, but he will, be gone one day, and our commitment to this cause can be restored.

I applaud the people who have engaged in what, here, can be described as an act of civil disobedience. Those engaged in it must be prepared to suffer the consequences for their actions. But they did the right thing.

Exactly, and that's how rights are fought for. Lives were lost during the Suffragette movement, but women won the right to enfranchisement and to vote. You don't get to change opinions and attitudes by writing polite letters and sitting on your arse.

I don't think straight people should be promoting their straight lifestyle at work. I don't think religious people should be preaching at work, either.

When you go to work, you do your work. Leave the other **** at home.

How very Postmodern of you, fragmenting the human agent and thinking it works that way. Do people never speak of their spouses where you work?

There is a difference between supporting human rights and pushing the agenda of various social groups. The government can do one without doing the other.

But we aren't even talking about "civil disobedience" here...or "consequences for their actions". Heck, the OP's article even said this:

Some acknowledge that their worst fears have not been borne out.

The administration has appointed several gay ambassadors.

Mr Trump became the first Republican president to make a statement celebrating Pride Month. No one has been fired for sexual orientation, but some said they have felt more vulnerable after Mr Trump tried to ban transgender people from the military.

So...it looks to me like people are stupidly being afraid about something that doesn't exist.

???

Talking about a spouse is promoting a lifestyle? Nonsense.

Do you think straight and LGBTQ individuals should freely be able to talk about their partner?

Is the state dept now going to fly white supremacist flags, religious flags, blue line police flags, etc?

Or are they showing favoritism to one group over others?

The lawsuits should be fun.

They should all be fired for insubordination.

Absolutely not; don't even think about them! Robots, that's the ticket.

The embassies should also be allowed to fly the Confederate flag during Confederate history month, too.

Really? You think provocative behaviour like that should be encouraged? Oh, and that confederate flag isn't recognised by anyone but racist morons. 'The South will rise again!':lamo 'Confederate history month'? You can celebrate failure if you like.

ignoring the orange fool's bigotry is a good move.
