Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal

I’m glad that an agreement was reached and that, hopefully, Mexico will do a better job stopping illegal immigrants from passing through their country to the U.S.. Having said that, I do not understand why you seem to believe that because the deal has been officially memorialized in writing that that makes any real difference. What’s America going to do if Mexico fails to live up to the agreement? Sue? The answer is nothing more than we could/would do without a written agreement.

I can't believe you are asking this question but in the event that you don't really know the answer to your question, the leverage for making Mexico uphold the deal are the suspension of future tariffs.

Yet another nonsense anti-Trump hit job thread that is based on the OP ignoring facts.

Yeah...everyone says that this new deal was actually reached months ago. Okay. But that means Mexico didn't follow through on their part of the deal since they've allowed hundreds of thousands of people to move through their country in those months when they should have been stopping them like they promised to do.

So...the fact is Mexico thought they could pull a fast one on Trump like everyone has done in the past to other Presidents. They thought they could get away with it. But they didn't learn the lessons that Trump has given them by his actions with other countries. So Mexico got their own lesson this time. Trump threatened them with tariffs that would destroy their economy. That got their attention, and fast. It only took days for them to take the kinds of actions they were supposed to take months ago.

So...it's time to see if Mexico has actually learned their lesson or not. It's up to them. If they keep doing what they agreed to do months ago, cool. If they try to pull a fast one again, not cool. Trump will slap those threatened tariffs on them so fast it'll make their heads swim.

I don't get the impression he is going to slap tariffs on them one way or another. He's just blowing a lot of hot air. This is a pattern that many foreign leaders are catching on to.

So Mexico had already agreed months ago to up their border National Guard presence to 5,400 once they had them to put there. Now that commitment is 6,000 instead of 5,400

Mexico will increase capacity for asylum seekers waiting in Mexico for US Asylum and Trump Administration agrees to increase number of Immigration Judges. Well I guess that is something....not much but something.

Not much because it does NOTHING about stemming the tide from the Northern Triangle. It also does not change the administration position which is one of punishing asylum seekers which has been a complete and total FAILURE while putting us on the wrong side of history. Just go look at the figures since Trump has taken office and instituted is policy of punishment. Total Flop....numbers at the border skyrocketed while we come off looking no better than a banana republic run by a tin-pot despot.

You should have the impression that he'll do what he threatens to do. His past actions...especially with China...proves that he's a man of his word.

Tell me...do you know what Trump did to China?

It doesn't matter what Mexico's "commitment" is. What matters is the results. We need to see this 100,000+ illegal border crossings every month substantially reduced. If Mexico doesn't help with that, Trump will slap them back into the stone age.

I’m trying to make the point as simple and easy as possible for you to understand. In writing or not, makes no difference as to what options are available to the administration should Mexico fail to live up to the agreement. You get it now?

Man.....You just cannot be seen to admit that once again, Trump was dishonest. He says he "won" something so you must repeat it. You must deny actual reality, in which this was already hammered out with Mexico and the whole tariff thing was just a show put on for you, with the purpose of duping you into crediting Trump himself.

You always do exactly the same thing. Any thread, any subject. You Fox tells you something or maybe you read a Trump tweet, and you scurry right over to DP to retype it and then high-five each other for sycophancy well done.

Democracy is ****ed with you lot infesting it.

You mean like how trump did with NK. NK hasn’t stopped and instead of slapping penalties on NK, trump now says he isn’t concerned. Face facts trump is the biggest flip flopper in the history of presidents and has dumb trump supporters duped to the max.

It chaps your ass that Trump will do what it takes to deal with a crisis. I guess you are so used to half-assed efforts from previous Presidents, you don't want anyone doing something that is actually effective.

Again if its like any of the "Butterflies and Bullfrogs" with NK

Well, you know(wink)

Deflection noted and...

Dismissed.

GOP leaders praised Trump for the outcome Friday evening.

“By using all the tools available to him under U.S. law, President Trump has advanced the protection of our national security interests,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said in a statement. “While I generally do not support imposing tariffs, except in cases of legitimate violations of U.S. trade law, Mexico’s lack of commitment when it comes to addressing the unsustainable and dangerous migratory crisis at our Southern Border has left this administration no other choice. By exerting maximum pressure and demanding decisive action from the López Obrador administration, President Trump has secured an important victory on behalf of the American people.”

Even GOPers rallied around President Trump's successful deal with MX.

Let's face it. Trump gave MX. a deal they couldn't refuse, a deal good for America but bad for his partisan foes. The latter, too bad, but they lost this one...

Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal

Mexico had already promised to take many of the actions agreed to in Friday's immigration deal with the US -- months before President Donald Trump's tariff threat.

Yet another Trump con-job exposed to the light of day. 90% of Trumps "deal" with Mexico announced on Friday was finalized in previous months, well before his recent tariff threat.

Yeah ... Righto Ringo. That's not how gunslingers acted in the Wild Wild West.
With this slow-walking could, shoulda, woulda.Trump has already played along as Mexico
takes More of their sweet time, hashing over their role in this Border crisis.
This is a mounting emergency that takes Emergency action.
It just too damn easy for those like the New York Times to write how inevitable
and Unnecessary Trump's approach to Mexico and our Border.
Just another in a square dance lineup of reasons that explains truly how
The New York Times IS ... The Enemy of the People.
Unless one square dances to Hip Hop crap.

???

Do you seriously think that tariffs on Mexico rising to 20-25% will make no difference to the Mexican economy? Heck, just the threat of those tariffs brought Mexico rushing to DC to work something out. If Mexico fails to live up to this agreement and if Trump slaps them with that tariff, Mexico will suffer.

And Mexico know this.

Believe me, Mexico WILL live up to their agreement.

He slapped tariffs on China. So much for your theory.

Please, you are trying to make Wyle E Coyote Trump look like Churchill. Doesn’t work. And Trump has really impressed other countries, lessons Mexico was unaware of til his recent bold moves? You must be one of the Dreamers Trump wants to get rid of.

I'll ask you the same thing I asked another member: Do you know what Trump did to China?

You can be sure that Mexico knows.

Who 'hammered this out' if not the Trump Administration? And the deal wasnt finalized and signed until 2 days ago. The tariff thread forced Mexico to formally commit to what had until that time only been a promise. And the ones running to DP to retype what they see on TV are you liberals. Youve been doing that for 2 1/2 years now so you can stop projecting.

Soooo, Mexico 'pledged' to do these things months ago. Yet they didnt. Now there is a written agreement that they will. Sounds like the threat of tariffs worked.

Written agreement?

Like:
NAFTA
Paris Accord
JCPOA

Ironclad, amirite?

Can you not read? It was because of the threat of tariffs that Trump reached a WRITTEN accord with MX.
Trump makes his haters look like the fools they are...

It really comes easy for them!

You see, libruls, or for that matter establishment politicians on both sides are always happy with just agreements on paper to flash in front of the press as long as their big donors are happy. That's why wethe US has made some pretty bad deals in the past. Neither our allies or enemies take them seriously. That is until Trump came along with an entirely new concept.....actually enforce the agreements. Mexico had no intention of really doing anything significant to stop the flow of illegals traversing through their country enroute to the US. That is until the treatened tariffs. Then suddenly Mexico was ready to make a real deal almost immediately.

Until this weekend, all we had from Mexico was promises of action. Now they have signed an agreement to act. Mexico doesnt benefit by breaking agreements and making an enemy of the US. If they dont live up to what they agreed to do, then they will face tariffs. Maybe more.

My eyes must deceive me, because I read it again. More likely, you have zero credibility, like your orange messiah.

Perhaps some day, you will learn the difference between agreeing to and actually doing. In between the time that you are saying Mexico agreed to do these things and the threat of tariffs, Mexico did virtually nothing and gave the migrants a clear path to the US.
