Slavery was a practice of greed that was incomprehensibly oppressive done by a group of people in part in Europe and the Americas over centuries ending in the late 19th century.
There are some white people today who feel that Democrats talk to them as if they are guilty of doing it because mostly other white people did it.
Democrats are not saying that. You are not guilty of it. That was those people. You are not them. You almost certainly disapprove of the slavery they did.
There's another point, though. Those centuries of discrimination - limits to gaining in education, wealth, good jobs, while white families did not have those limits - led to inequalities the effects of which still exist between black and white people today largely, though they have gradually been reducing in areas.
Democrats recognize that and simply favor justice, equality of opportunity, and recognize that there is room to go in reducing those effects of historical discrimination. If there's hostility, it's about opposing that justice now and not blaming you for the sins of others in the past.
Not every trump supporter is "deplorable" for their reasons for supporting trump. Democrats don't say that; Hillary did not say that. But some are, and it would be better if better trump supporters were able to recognize flaws in other trump supporters.
And understand some of the criticism of trump, what he is appealing to when he equates Hispanic immigrants with 'rapists and murderers', even if he reluctantly 'guesses' that 'some' are not. Are any white people murderers? Are any white people rapists? Yes. Should white people equally be referred to as 'rapists and murderers'? No, neither group should, even if you can find some criminals in any race.
Democrats understand that his purpose is to cause fear and hate among his white listeners of those groups he attacks, in order to get power for himself from the white people listening, and that Democrats see that as harmful and evil to do. It doesn't mean Democrats like rapists and murderers; they don't. Using those fear tactics, and backing them up with harshness to innocent people, to get power, Democrats condemn.
You don't have to support bad things to be a Republican. You don't have to support the fear and hate, torture, brutality, a lack of charity, or other things to be a good Republican. You can condemn those things when they are done by your party politicians and be a good Republicans, and more importantly a good American.
Some white Americans feel that Democrats see racism in everything. Sometimes Democrats do see racism where it doesn't exist. Sometimes Republicans don't see racism in themselves when it does. But that doesn't mean you can't recognize racism, whether current or effects of past actions, while still criticizing where you see wrong claims of it.
It's important to try to relate not only to all Americans as human beings, but all human beings as human beings - to care about reducing poverty in the rest of the world, mostly not by handouts, but by recognizing when we, and by we I mainly mean a few including large corporations, are causing harm for selfish benefits and supporting more justice for others.
