If this wasn't so damned sickeningly sad, it would be funny. Ben Carson gave us a window today as to how unqualified people in Trump's cabinet actually are. Ben Carson has had two and a half years in his job as HUD Secretary and neither he nor his staff understand the very basics of what the job entails

Valezquez: "how many people are currently awaiting HUD housing?" Ben Carson: "um, there are hundreds of thousands"

NO, there are 4.4 million people waiting for public housing.

We saw the epitome of what 'the Washington swamp' is. It's not the Democrats as Trump said at his rallies, it's HIM and his shady Cabinet. All Ben Carson is interested in is spending our tax money on refrigerators and big dining room sets for his office.

This virtually makes me want to throw up knowing inept, incapable, uncaring and 'in your face' corruption that exists within Trump's government. As we've been saying all along, "a fish rots from the head" and they are all sure rotten.

All I can say is that it shouldn't take a Republican Congressman to itemize every detail in which Trump obstructed justice as spelled out by Robert Mueller in his investigation. The Democrats are showing themselves to be weaker in their impeachment desire than a Republican is. Democrats better grow a spine, and soon.

Worthless soundbites and goofy nicknames for your opponents is what our astute voters look for.

How does one qualify for public housing?

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. An HA determines your eligibility based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. If you are eligible, the HA will check your references to make sure you and your family will be good tenants. HAs will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the project's environment.

HAs use income limits developed by HUD. HUD sets the lower income limits at 80% and very low income limits at 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area in which you choose to live. Income limits vary from area to area so you may be eligible at one HA but not at another. The HA serving your community can provide you with the income levels for your area and family size, or you can also find the income limits here on the internet.

So let us assume for a minute that it is indeed 4.4 mil on the waiting list. Who are they? We seem to have a low income housing crisis. Sorting this out, talking about it, proposing changes if necessary, what's wrong with that?

Now we can also bicker about someone from THE TRUMP administration being too stupid to live. I, for one, find Dr. Carson much more successful and educated than more of his critics, whatever the current administration.

The ladies were grandstanding for public consumption, rather than focusing on the more important issue. However, may they be known as holding the candle for illegals rather than citizens. I hope this video is spread about in areas desperate for housing.

Today, Steve Mnuchin and the Treasury Dept. will be facing questions from the same committee and Katie Porter will also have some questions for him. I'm sure he's going to do much better than Ben Carson, we'll see. I still can't believe he's a pediatric neurosurgeon. To have such a man that's so massively ignorant about his job is dangerous. People are waiting for HUD housing, 4.4 million of them and the HUD secretary can't help them because he doesn't have the first notion as to how to go about doing that. During his questioning yesterday, Ben Carson repeatedly said 'this is not my problem, this is Congress' problem'.

Katie Porter said that there was a woman inside HUD, Deputy HUD Director Pam Patenaude, who had a fundamental understanding of what she was doing at HUD, but she left. According to Wiki: She resigned at the end of 2018 after a series of disagreements with Carson and the Trump White House, including addressing racial segregation and the Trump Administration's effort to withhold congressionally appropriated money to Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria relief.

Hmm... does the fact that more US citizens are waiting for public housing assistance, than Ben Carson acknowledged, mean that letting illegal immigrants continue to occupy it (against the law as written) is less of a problem?

It seems that you, like your MSNBC 'news' source, have decided to ignore the reason for the "hearing", which was discussion of the HUD plan to finally remove illegal immigrants from public housing within *gasp* 18 months, and divert to discussion to the real issue which is the outrageous cost of government office furniture and, of course, the Mueller report.
 
The tRump miss administration did zero to prepare themselves for the transition, choose unqualified people for all positions, especially at the cabinet level. Many positions are still un-filled.

To read how debilitating this is and about the important work going undone read Michael Lewis’s book “The Fifth Risk” to better understand how much good our Government actually does/did. And how tRumps miss administration is blowing it.

I found that entire exchange to be cringeworthy, and I really like Secretary Carson. REO is a common term when discussing foreclosures, and all financial institutions refer to their foreclosed property as "Real Estate Owned", and have for decades. The fact that Carson was completely unfamiliar with that term was very very concerning.

I wish Trump had made him surgeon general or another well suited role. He should not be in charge of HUD as he has absolutely no basic knowledge of the matter at all.

Change is definitely needed at HUD and it's nothing that just happened overnight or with this administration. My husband did contracting work through the local housing authority which is funded by HUD and it's ridiculous hearing the stories about the kind of people living in those houses/apartments and trashing the places at our dollar. The last place he worked at before he stopped taking those jobs was a complete cesspool of drug addicts and people who want to do nothing but get free housing and laze around all day. Sure there's probably a many people who genuinely need the help but they are being overshadowed by the people abusing it and it never hurts to start the conversation on ways to improve these kind of services.
