Many liberals see the rise of Trump and far-right leaders in Europe, the Philippines and other parts of the world as a repeat of the fascist rise of Hitler, Mussolini and Francisco Franco. But if history is truly repeating itself, the defeat of fascism in this century will be followed not by a progressive paradise but by a post-World War II-type era of social conservatism and bourgeoise ideals: the “1950s,” a period often mocked and derided by the left.

If the 1950s are coming back, look for woman to focus more on family and children and less on careers. The alphabet soup can of LGBQT will be pushed to the rear of the pantry. The self-segregation by ideology occurring now may be extended to self-segregation by lifestyle and race. The cosmopolitan elites will persevere, but they will lose much of their influence in the media.

While the culture will move right, a liberal amount of government intervention will be required to focus on the family. For example, generous Social Security credits might be given to stay-at-home moms.

Only in your dreams.

When you say the defeat of facism in this century, you mean THIS (21st) century?
Do you foresee a rise of facism in the near future?

No, they're not coming back.

You can pretend they are to your heart's content, but it won't change reality.

With the US becoming minority white by 2042, your Trumpian scenario is moot.

The spike in right wing conservatism worldwide is a reaction to the rapid social progress of the 20th and 21st centuries. When change happens too quickly people always briefly rebel. Progress is not a smooth line, but a jagged one of fits and starts. Right now, were seeing a brief rise in conservatism and a longing for the comfort of yesterday the face of the unknown future. It will be followed by a drastic drop in the coming years in favor of progress, as it always is.

Don't get your hopes up. You will live to see the pendulum swing back to the left, and it will swing much further than it was before it swung right.

If the 50's were coming back we'd, as a society, value engineers and scientists far more than ignorant celebrities. But given the vast amount of ignorance that we seem to indulge in, as evidence of Trump being President....the 50's shall not be back in that regards. If you're limiting the "return of the 50's" to just some rise in racism and misogynism; perhaps you have a point.

Only to moms? How about for one or the other?

I was a teenager in the 1950s.

It was essentially a peaceful era.

No one was concerned about crime.

It was "I Love Lucy" and the start of that new invention called the television.

We had a war hero, General Dwight Eisenhower, as President.

Oh, sure, there were some rumblings of discontent in the country, but no one could have anticipated the explosion that came in the 1960s.

The 1950s had a lot of nice features, so here's hoping that the comments in the OP come true.

If it was the 1950's my wife and I would be illegally married. Much of the defense rooted in religious doctrine. Good times!

The homicide rate is almost exactly what it is today. Information has changed and society has progressed socially, there was a ton of welfare and affirmative action for whites though. This is what people long for when they reference the 1950s. A time of segregation on welfare Capitalism for the whites, particularly those who served in the military. They will of course object to the internationalist Dollar System created at Bretton Woods and the high tax rate on top earners which afforded such policies. But nostalgia isn't necessarily a longing for reality.

Unless, of course, you were a minority, in which case you had no rights and were plagued by bands of terrorist thugs

Well, your prediction seems predicated on the defeat of fascism, so post this again when that happens. It's on the rise. It always starts with pretend populism.

That, much exacerbated by mass migration which is mainly Climate Change induced famine globally. We should distinguish our own asylum and migration issues from those being experienced globally. Ours in large part have been caused by overlooking the issues in our own hemisphere some caused by us for issues miles and miles further on and having that remarkably blind strategic decision come back home to roost. The maddening part of that is that we could have handled both easily.

War torn parts of the world generally require a catalyst. They often arise because people lose access to the vital resources of life. You end up with people fighting for resources or migrating because they do not even think there are enough resources within their grasp to make it worthwhile to fight. That said we are on the receiving end of the direct consequences of Climate Change. If we are not careful we will end up with beachfront property in Pittsburg and all that rich, fertile farmland in the middle of the country, the world's breadbasket simply flooded out.

How does that grab ya' red staters everywhere? If I am remembering it right the amphibious car came and went in the 1950's. So one could make the case that we return to a viable market for the amphibious car. There is your return to the 1950's.

Right, the explosion of the 1960s seems to come out of nowhere for those in these safe bubbles of suburban society in the 1950s. The Middle Class still today experience little of the violence and discontent in this country.

American history largely ignores the majority poor who have occupied this country throughout its history. When Robert Kennedy visited these communities in the 1960s, many were seeing them for the first time, but these communities didn't just sprout up out of nowhere they were there in the 1950s.

The 1950s was kind of the height of American Exceptionalism, many things were suppressed in the propagandist media. America was also rebuilding Europe, helping its allies try to retake former colonies, and focused heavily on the military over social spending do that Europeans could build their Social Democracies. All this required painting a rosy picture of life at home, Eisenhower sort of represents the 1950s in a way. In that he was a master in concealing what was really going on, which in turn did have a boost to overall optimism.

As they say, ignorance is bliss.

I mean, if you were a white male, it was a great time.

And that time is GONE and not returning.

Maybe this is mother nature having her way with the human race. In most of nature we males are used to procreate, often promptly slaughtered for our sustenance value and that is that. Either that or we beat each other's brains in trying to maintain control over a harem as opposed to being an outcast and solitary male meandering around looking for an old broken down male that still has a harem to take out. Males are in nature more often than not big stupid lumbering dingdong's living off the yo-yo between our legs.

There's one benefit to all Americans with a roll-back to the 50's. There were no fast-food restaurant chains back then, none. If Wendy's, Taco Bell, McDonald's and Burger King just vanished, people would have to cook meals at home again and get healthier while losing weight.

The article is mind numbingly ignorant of the country operating under functioning apartheid up till the 1980's thanks to Slavery and the failure of Reconstruction. We keep acting like Slavery and Apartheid are way in our rear view mirrors. They might be twenty, thirty years in the rear view TOPS....probably not even that.
