Trump says he would ask Supreme Court to intervene if Democrats move to impeach him

There is little precedent to support the idea of the Supreme Court weighing in on the merits of impeachment.

President Trump suggested Wednesday that he would ask the Supreme Court to intervene if Democrats move to impeach him — a notion that legal experts said showed a misunderstanding of the Constitution. It was unclear how Trump would legally justify such a move, since the Constitution delegates impeachment proceedings to Congress, not the courts. Trump mentioned the idea briefly in morning tweets in which he lashed out at Democrats who are continuing to investigate him following the release of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report. “I DID NOTHING WRONG,” Trump wrote. “If the partisan Dems ever tried to Impeach, I would first head to the U.S. Supreme Court. Not only are there no ‘High Crimes and Misdemeanors,’ there are no Crimes by me at all.”

As has been clear since inauguration day, Trump neither understands nor respects the US Constitution.

Also clear with Trumps orders to ignore Congressional subpoena's is that his strategy is to stonewall investigations into his criminality until the 2020 election.

Great pff one party system here we come

Trump wants to be a dictator and that is clear from all his actions. This is a constitutional crisis of the greatest magnitude and our nation hangs in the balance.

Trump has no say if the House impeaches him and neither does the Court.

The Congress - or even the House - should immediately take steps to defund the complete White House operation until he complies with legal subpoenas. If they cannot do that, the House should not give him a penny more in future budgets until he complies with their subpoenas.

The Democrats have always brought a pillow to the gun fight. It is high time that changes and they bring uzis.

Yet again tRump overreacts to a perceived threat to his authority. He should know by now that there is zero chance that the Senate would reach a 2/3 majority for removal.

He feels the constitution is unconstitutional, and he's got a Supreme Court who seems willing to let him do whatever he wants. Good times.

He doesn't care about that. He doesn't want Congress rooting around in his corruption and broadcasting their findings.

The guy has got to go.

Trump is the true American anti-Christ.

I suspect Trump is afraid that all the truth would emerge in a trial and the Senate would then convict him when is treason with the Russians is revealed to the nation.

Exactly

He'll order the deplorables to start shooting before he allows anyone to unearth his life of filth.

Which is why impeachment must start today.

I have been against impeachment until today.

The House needs to document all this garbage he has done, it's so much and vote then send it to the Senate.

Yes, I know the Senate will not vote to impeach but it will be an historical record to hang on the GOp forever.

The sadddest part, for me, I am a republican. Where has my party gone.

Where are the days when a republican was an American first?

“If the President were to seek judicial intervention in that fashion, the courts would almost certainly refuse to hear the case on the ground that it is a ‘political question’ textually entrusted to Congress by the Constitution.”

--Joshua Matz

“Not even a SCOTUS filled with Trump appointees would get in the way of the House or Senate.”

---Laurence Tribe

Well, he "could" ask … I guess. They couldn't do anything for him, but he could ask.

Impeachment isn't going to happen. His cult won't vote to convict. Defeat him at the ballot box and vote out all Tweety cultists.

Look, I know you're no fan of liberalism, or the Democrats in general, but please try and get this.
I believe I can actually speak confidently for most of the liberals and Democrats on this forum when I say that we feel there is a need for impeachment which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that Donald Trump is a Republican.

In fact, I also believe I can actually speak confidently for most of the liberals and Democrats on this forum when I say that the bulk of our entire OBJECTION to his presidency has NOTHING to do with the fact that he is a Republican AND nothing to do with Hillary.

As a matter of fact, I even believe that I can actually speak confidently for most of the liberals and Democrats on this forum when I say that ALL of the above AND MORE hinges strictly on the fact that Trump's behavior itself demonstrates an unfitness for office which is well nigh indisputable, entirely above and apart from ALL POLITICS altogether.

Yes, Democrats are UNHAPPY when a Republican wins the POTUS...yes...I GRANT YOU EVERYTHING.
That is not what's happening here, that is not what's happening now.
Believe it or not, it's NOT ABOUT YOU Republicans at all.

Simply put, Trump is a scary and dangerous individual who neither understands or respects the office, the law, democracy or the Constitution he is entrusted to defend.

And lastly, I think I can even speak for most of us if I say that, if Trump had won AS A DEMOCRAT, it would PAIN US GREATLY but in the face of conduct such as his, we would be forced to accept the reality that we had elected a monster.

And it would most likely destroy OUR party the way he is destroying YOURS right now.
We can fight like cats and dogs, but right now, there is a job to do, save the country.

This is not about conservatism. He's destroying that too, and believe it or not, many of us are sometimes on the same side as you on some issues.

We are not your enemy. We love this country.

I'll wait and see if there are any LIKES.
If there are NONE, then maybe I really AM wrong and don't speak for anyone but myself.
But I am betting I will have a TON of liberal support on this one.
And if that turns out to be the case, maybe you might not be in the mood for a liberal "group hug" but just know this much:
We consider you conservatives (well, the rational and sane ones) to be our fellow Americans, even when we disagree.

Greetings from your liberal allies on the Left, let's do our duty and live as a free people and we will fight again someday, but maybe we will once again learn to sit down and hammer out what's best for our beautiful country TOGETHER.
Maybe that is the lesson to be learned from the Trump presidency, to respect and honor that one most precious gift we have, which we might be on the verge of losing forever....if we do not act.

They are gone - that is for sure.

Congrats to the republicans, you elected a dictator.

I'm pretty sure they will rule in his favor since the Mueller investigation didn't find anything impeachable.

It’s also pretty clear that he’s scared S***less and thinks the GOP Senate may not protect him

What if during the trial evidence comes out abut the Trump finances and the Republicans can see once and for all that he is a tool dependent on the Russians largesse for his economic survival? Would that not compel the requisite number of Republicans to make that journey to the White House and encourage a resignation?

That may be the only legal way out of this situation Trump has placed us in.

I doubt they’d even hear a case like that. Impeachment is not up to the courts

We need a clean sweep in 2020 to rid our government of republicans who have sold their souls to protect this unqualified, unethical child who is sitting in the White House. Tom Steyer has put up a neon billboard near Trump Tower with an impeachment poll. It was up to 6 million as of one hour ago.

WRONG. Mueller said that Trump could not be indicted as a sitting president. He laid out a road map for Congress to do its work and impeach him.

Obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense.

Perhaps you are having one of those "Come to Jesus" moments where you finally see all the rational and sane peers in your party headed for the lifeboats. Grab a seat before it is too late. You can always rebuild another great ship again someday.

But not if you allow yourselves to all drown.

In the final analysis, they will protect their won careers and toss Trump into the garbage bin if the evidence is there and it is obvious.
