Wow... Just wow.

Putting American flags on police cars sparks backlash in Laguna Beach

A decision to affix an American flag graphic to the side of freshly painted Laguna Beach police cars is dividing residents, who are alternately praising the image as patriotic or panning it as too aggressive.

After hearing the criticism and acknowledging that the image they approved didn’t quite match the final results, officials agreed to reconsider their February decision to paint the Laguna Beach Police Department’s fleet of 11 squad cars. The City Council will take up the issue again at its Tuesday meeting.

“People are screaming that the American flag on a police car is somehow or another ... hurting people’s feelings who might be immigrants or visitors,” said Councilman Peter Blake. “People are actually ridiculous enough to bring up comments about our cop cars having American flags on them.”

Artist Carrie Woodburn went to the podium at the March 19 council meeting and said it was “shocking to see the boldness of the design” when the newly painted Ford Explorers rolled out.

“We have such an amazing community of artists here, and I thought the aesthetic didn’t really represent our community,” Woodburn said. “It feels very aggressive.”

I get the feeling they'd rather see it look something like this:

It implies federal authority. That's not a good thing to fake.

If we don't put American flags on police cars, how are we going to know that they don't come from Russia? Or Singapore? Or Norway? (Liberals will stop at nothing) We must have American flags on American police cars so that we have some assurance that they really contain American police.

At least it isn't the Punisher logo in red/white/blue like a lot of cops put on their personal vehicles. Those idiots should be taken out back and beaten with a sack of hornets.

In that case they need to remove the word "police" because that really implies authority, snowflakes abound. It's a good possibility that it simply implies pride in America, sorta like your avatar implies, but evidently a bad thing to some nowadays. Federal authority fear was not in the complaints, one was it might offend immigrants or visitors? Should we find out were they are from and fly their flag or colors to make them comfortable here?

It's America and we have a flag, if a visitor might take offense then they chose the wrong place to visit.

These people are like a parody.

"But the graphic element of the paint job didn't scream “Laguna Beach” to everyone. Local designer Chris Prelitz was dining with his wife at the Montage hotel when he spotted several parents and small children scattering.

“There was like a little panic going on, and I was like, ‘What’s happening?’ ” Prelitz said. The hubbub, he discovered, was over a cluster of police cars that had arrived at the scene. “When one of them’s there, it works. But all of a sudden, I saw, wow, when there are three, maybe four of them together, folks thought it was a SWAT team, federal agents. So it had a very striking, strong impact, so much so that I think there might be some unintended consequences.”"

I think putting American flags on police cars is a terrible idea...in Japan.

That's why the put the city name on the cars. The reason to have an American flag is to affirm they are operating within the restraints of the FEDERAL Constitutional Bill Of Rights - not just the whims of their city.

Irrelevant. One could put "City Authority" across both sides and a flag still says "Feds".

And you should be the one to do it.

Make sure someone is filming it...lets see how it turns out.

Most city police use a sugary motto of some kind, like "To Protect and Serve." With a gaggle of those flag cars people see, "To Arrest and Deport". In SoCal, that will indeed start a panic as half the restaurant employees surge out the back door!

No one thinks that, just like they don't think every house and business with an American flag is a federal building. But, to some degree police are federal authorities because their oath is to protect the laws and constitution of their state AND THE UNITED STATES. Yes, local police could intervene and detain a person for committing a major federal crime. In fact, most took a oath that is exactly what they will do.

This is what they do. One or two people get their panties in a wad about something stupid, and all of a sudden it's "liberals hate the flag!"

When you're dealing with simpletons, expect simple arguments. These people couldn't take a piss without a plumbob.

I don't expect cops wanna look like feds.

That's quite a clever excuse for being against having an American flag displayed on a police car, but an excuse is precisely what it is...

You see, we all know you got a degree in the humanities and a certain level of disdain toward the United States is a prerequisite for graduating, along with knowing how best to safely burn an American flag.

How about putting on the State flag? Or better yet, the City of Laguna Beach can use their own official flag:

None of the police cars in my entire State have an American flag painted on the sides of their police vehicles. It's funny though, people seem to recognize them as police cars even without the flag on the side.

Hell, you can bet that the "non patriotic" cop car at the top of the original picture is recognized as cop when its patrolling too. Why the need to spend taxpayer dollars for the new paintjobs is my question?
