Health-care law more popular despite Trump’s repeated attempts to destroy it

President Trump has begun a fresh assault on the Affordable Care Act, declaring his intent to come up with a new health-care plan and backing a state-led lawsuit to eliminate the entire law.

But Trump and Republicans face a major problem: The 2010 law known as Obamacare has become more popular and enmeshed in the country’s health-care system over time. Thirty-six states and the District of Columbia have expanded Medicaid — including more than a dozen run by Republicans — and 25 million more Americans are insured, with millions more enjoying coverage that is more comprehensive because of the law.
===========================================
Repealing the ACA & not having a replacement looks like a sure way to a Democrat sweep in 2020. McConnell said he wouldn't even touch this subject until after the elections, so we'll only have Trump's promises (read 'lies') to go on.

If the lawsuit is successful, then Congress...both Reps and Dems...will be forced to come up with a replacement or suffer the consequences.

That is something those Reps and Dems do NOT want to do.

Too bad.

The "Dems" have already done it, and have legislation on the books to close some of the holes in ACA. Your BOTH SIDES! isn't going to work here. The GOP doesn't care about the issue, and has no ideas. Their entire contribution to healthcare reform has been bitching and whining about what those other guys did.

The lawsuit is alive solely because the Republicans, with no ideas of their own, decided to try to kill the ACA instead and waived the penalties for being uninsured. Reverse that and there is no lawsuit. Would take an hour in the House, and the same amount of time in the Senate if the Republican ACA arsonists and vandals just got out of the way. That's all that's needed - for Republicans to take a seat in the back and shut the hell up because they've got nothing to contribute.

Republicans are apparently still stuck in 2010. What was a "winning issue" for them then got them clobbered in the 2018 mid-terms after Americans saw what a bunch of lying frauds they are.

"close some of the holes"??? Sorry, that won't fix it.

In any case, that's irrelevant to what I said. Shall I repeat myself?

OK, fine, if you don't like that alternative, then we can all wait until we're dead while the GOP comes up with a better option. They've had the ball since the ACA passed, and showed us nothing but the equivalent of a term paper written the night before it's due. The GOP have no ideas because they don't care. It's that simple. It's better politically to point out the downsides of ACA than to present their own plans so we can all see the BIGGER downsides in their proposals.

If that's not clear enough, the Democrats PASSED their plan and it's law, so your 'Dems do NOT want' to solve it is contradicted by REALITY. If the court says it needs to be fixed, the Democrats will EMBRACE the chance and if the GOP just keeps their ignorant, uninterested, lazy asses out of the way, it will get done. The Democrats can cure the lawsuit in an hour, pass the ACA fixes already been proposed, and the country can move on with little fuss. A month at most to do that.

Yep, it's almost good they had the WH, House and Senate, and set up the rules so they just needed a simple majority in the Senate, and after years of promises we got:

:failpail:

Now even the dimmest bulbs know the GOP is full of crap on the issue. The simple truth is they do not care. The end. They care about the politics of it, but not the issue.

Trump voters might be excused in 2016 because Trump in fact promised us UHC, cheaper, better, more coverage, lower premiums, more choice, more doctors, the best ever plan! And when we go to vote in 2020, that's all he'll have to point to - more empty promises. So the 2016 supporters will have no excuse to trust the man a second time.

Sorry, but the Dems AND the Reps are on the hook if the court trashes Obamacare.

Look...you can complain about the Reps all you want. Go ahead. But when Obamacare is gone, you'll have no choice but to blame BOTH the Reps and the Dems.

The only one you WON'T be able to blame is Trump.

The only plan the GOP has is to tell voters that it's complicated...

Right, but you're not saying that - you're asserting as some kind of point that the Dems don't WANT to find a replacement. It's a particularly weak allegation of "BOTH SIDES!!!"

Both sides! You've learned from "the media" I see.

Yes, it's perfectly fine to equally blame the party which has spent years trying to undermine and kill the ACA, including killing the penalty/tax which is why the court ruled ACA must be invalidated entirely, and the party supports this lawsuit to kill it, versus the party that did none of those things and opposed killing the penalty. Do you even hear yourself? If you did, you'd know it's ridiculous.

The only one you WON'T be able to blame is Trump.

I guess you don't understand the lawsuit, and what prompted it, and why the judge ruled as he did. Because if you DID understand, you'd know that's total nonsense.

If the lawsuit is successful, then Congress...both Reps and Dems...will be forced to come up with a replacement or suffer the consequences.

Here's what they would need to do: immediately reinstate every word of the ACA sans Sec. 1501, and incorporate the contents of H.R. 1884.Perhaps also recalibrate the CSR thresholds and add public options or Medicare buy-in rights in concentrated (particularly rural) markets.

No more constitutional challenges, premiums fall by double digits, enrollment rises, markets work.

They're self-aware enough to know it's probably not a good idea to acknowledge that Trump is the one now driving the quest to strip people of their coverage. Even though Trump himself isn't exactly keeping it a secret.

Right, but you're not saying that - you're asserting as some kind of point that the Dems don't WANT to find a replacement.

What part of "the Dems AND the Reps" do you not understand?

Oh...sorry...I forgot to tell you that I ~snipped the nonsense~.

If you say so.

If I were you, I'd start writing my Congressman.

My Congresswoman already knows this. As anyone with common sense should.

You don't need an imaginary, non-existent "replacement" for the ACA if its contents are thrown out by activist judges on a severability technicality. You just reinstate them without the contested provision, which isn't in effect anymore anyway. Taking the opportunity while you're at it to also implement the improvements the Dems have been pushing for years is a no-brainer.

Oh...sorry...I forgot to tell you that I ~snipped the nonsense~.

The GOP passed the bill to reduce the penalty to $0. Trump signed it, supported that part of the bill. That's the core of the lawsuit, why the judge struck down the entire ACA. Democrats opposed all that, voted NO - all of them. It's not "both sides" when one party takes actions that might kill off ACA and the other party opposed it.

Second, you claimed, "If the lawsuit is successful, then Congress...both Reps and Dems...will be forced to come up with a replacement or suffer the consequences. That is something those Reps and Dems do NOT want to do."

That's false. Democrats are eager to cure the lawsuit and address healthcare reform with new legislation. You can read all about it if you want - the plan is out there in detail. There is in fact only one party who doesn't want to address healthcare, and it's the GOP. There is only one party who has tried all they can to kill the ACA and it's the GOP. If the court strikes it down, there's one party to blame, and it's the GOP, and Trump, whose WH and DoJ lawyers are arguing in support of killing the ACA, striking down the entire law. Trump did that!

There is no both sides here. I'm not sure why you're not eager to give the GOP credit for doing what they've said they WANT to do since 2010, which is kill off the ACA. They're not shy about it, Trump sure isn't shy about it. But for some reason if it happens you want them to take none of the credit for doing what they tell us they want to do and which would be done because of bills they've passed.

You know I think that could work.

The ASA was designed to be fluid make any needed changes that came up as time went by.

Without Republicans consistently sabotaging it we can find the true problems with it and deal with the.

The ACA was never meant to be the total solution, it was meant to be the first step...
