Warfare, theft, murder, rape?

Which is it?

This wasn't a scandal but it was shocking at the time. Jonestown massacre, (November 18, 1978), mass murder-suicide of members of the California-based Peoples Temple cult at the behest of their charismatic but paranoid leader, Jim Jones, in Jonestown agricultural commune, Guyana. The death toll exceeded 900, including some 300 age 17 and under, making the incident one of the largest mass deaths in American history.

They all just drank the Koolaid and then lay over and died, side by side. I can't imagine much more stupidity and horror than that. Great choice.

No, it is not part of American history. It didn't happen in the USA nor would have.

It happened in South America, but it did include willing participants to poison themselves. I think it could have happened here in the USA.

What is this, the dead bodies pic thread?

Holocaust
Gulag
Killing Fields

I take it the greatest scandal in history when it comes to chickens, turtles, pigeons, etc. won’t qualify here.

I was wondering. Environmental scandals makes sense as an exception. But for the OP to make the distinction or entertain reliance arguments seems implausible.

LBJ's involvement with the JFK assassination

Scandal and tragedy are not the same. In known Western history probably the assassination of Julius Caesar, leading to wars stretching from Greece to Egypt.

A biggie in Asia in more modern times was the last Emperor of China joining with the Japanese in WW2 hoping to regain power.

There are worse tragedies, such as the genocide and in many locations total extinction of the indigenous people of the Americas, but that is different than a "scandal."

It was supposed to be humans behaving badly throughout history kind of thread

If turtles and chickens are so important, why don't we just kill them now as well as all humans? After all, liberals say the world will end for humans in 12 years.

What if the greatest scandal in human history is that we have all sucked all along throughout history?

There's your top three. If anyone cannot be convinced one of them was the worst then they're horribly ignorant or a terrible human.

sigh.....They were all U.S. American citizens, thus, it is our American history. I had a strong feeling there would be one joker in the forum who would say 'no, it's not part of American history' and sure enough, you never fail to deliver something ignorant.

If you read the last line "making the incident one of the largest mass deaths in American history." That means, it's part of U.S. history.

I am thinking that the "Final Solution" that was the holocaust wherein a government decided that it was good and important to murder six million (or more) men women and children. If Hitler had not been hellbent on simultaneously taking over the world they might have gotten away with it.

Beyond that, I think slavery and all that it entailed is right up there.

Organized religion.

Over the centuries I don't think anything else has done nearly as much harm, overall.
