WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Supreme Court on Tuesday endorsed the U.S. government's authority to detain immigrants awaiting deportation anytime - potentially even years - after they have completed prison terms for criminal convictions, handing President Donald Trump a victory as he pursues hardline immigration policies.The court ruled 5-4 along ideological lines, with its conservative justices in the majority and its liberal justices dissenting, that federal authorities could pick up such immigrants and place them into indefinite detention anytime, not just immediately after they finish their prison sentences.


The law states the government can detain convicted immigrants "when the alien is released" from criminal detention. Civil rights lawyers argued that the language of the law shows that it applies only immediately after immigrants are released. The Trump administration said the government should have the power to detain such immigrants anytime. "It is not the court's job", Alito wrote, to impose a time limit for when immigrants can be detained after serving a prison sentence. Alito noted that the court has said in the past that "an official's crucial duties are better carried out late than never."

I’m not sure there’s anything here worth celebrating. Unless you like the idea of taxpayers footing the bill for a corporation to detain these people for the duration of the immigration court’s backlog.

I like the idea of convicted felons who are HERE ILLEGALLY, NOT BEING RELASED back onto our streets.

We no longer have a Supreme Court. What we have is another political arm of the GOP. They no longer look at what the constitution says, instead they rule in the way the GOP tells them to do. This is what happens when you put political hacks on the court. It is too bad, another bad thing that the GOP has done to this country. Next it will be to make Trump or another GOPer president for life. That ought to please the writer of this OP.

First of all, commenting on FONT, etc...is a clear indication of a WEAK ARGUMENT.


Paying to keep criminals off of our streets is preferable to providing them ACCESS TO MORE AMERICAN VICTIMS, in my "ledger".

That’s because some of us have actually read the Constitution and know that indefinite detention doesn’t jive with the Sixth Amendment.
 
If this means that ICE can take them into custody after they have served their sentences for the purposes of deporting them, then that is great. Nothing wrong with that. But if the purpose is to imprison someone indefinitely AFTER they have served their sentence, then no way is that ok. Are you kidding me? That can't be what this ruling means.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

It means that while the ACLU spends YEARS fighting their deportation(s), the CONVICTED FELONS will stay locked up, until we ship them BACK HOME...primarily. They are not FREE TO EXCAPE INTO SANCTUARY CTITIES/STATES.

I see no exceptions written into the Amendment. You’ll need repeal and replace it if you want there to be an exception. Or you could just admit that you’re fine with unconstitutional practices so long as it suits your agenda.

I was amused by the word "victory."

The Deep State will find a way to get around this ruling.

And, of course, if a Democrat becomes president in January, 2021 (as seems likely), s/he will immediately take steps to reverse the decision and maybe even give compensation to the undocumented immigrants who have been detained.
