I think Trump despises who he is, but can't help it, he loves to see others suffer and has a deep envy/hatred of anyone who is a publicly honored and publicly beloved person, Only a person who hates himself could do that.

outlined in detail here:

Why didn't you include #12 which was Charm?

Yes, Trump checks every box, including the last one according to many.

In my completely unprofessional opinion based solely on his public behavior, I think all but the first two easily apply to Trump. I'm not real sure what constitutes "proactive manipulation". And I don't think Trump is more sadistic than the average person. He likes to go after people who go after him, but that is vengeful, not sadistic. And I think being vengeful is a much more common trait than malignant narcissism.

I also don't think Trump despises himself. I think he is in absolute love with himself. I think he believes he is the greatest and smartest person on the planet. I think to him his greatness seems like an obvious fact and he feels offended when other people don't acknowledge it.

That's a facade. He is very insecure. That's why even though he's president he still feels a need to lie about what he has achieved. Even lie about his height. That's why he spends so much time obsessing over and trying to undermine the achievements of people such as Obama and McCain. He knows on a visceral level that he can't measure up to people like that. Which causes him to stew and vent. Which reinforces negative reactions to him. Which makes him stew and vent and resent. Ad nauseum.

You might be right, at least on some level. It would jive with an answer he gave during an interview in 2014.

“No, I don’t want to think about it,” he said when Mr. D’Antonio asked him to contemplate the meaning of his life. “I don’t like to analyze myself because I might not like what I see.”

What Drives Donald Trump? Fear of Losing Status, Tapes Show - The New York Times

That was a surprising bit of honesty. Not as surprising as my use of the word "jive", but close.

People who really believe they're great and smart don't need to remind everybody.

That rings true. After all, I certainly don't go around bragging about how great and smart I am.

;)

I would say Trump hits just about all of those. While many likely don't hit every trait as Trump does, narcissism is a pretty common among politicians.

How many of the [above] 12 traits of malignant narcissism does Trump have?

By my observation, Trump regularly exhibits at least nine of the eleven listed traits. (Presumably the twelfth appears in the referenced content, but I've yet to read that document, so I cannot say whether Trump exhibits 9 of 12 or 10 of 12 signs of malignant narcissism.)

Is this a joke? Trump loves media attention and if he was "hypersensitive to criticism" he would have run home to mommy years ago.

If 'Mommy' is a stadium full of red hats to give him validation and succor, that's exactly what he does.

But but but... you aren't a psychologist!! ;)

My mother-in-law had Narcissistic Personality Disorder so I am acutely aware of the symptoms and there is no doubt Trump is a narcissist. When people bring up the above argument I simply ask, "Do you need to be a doctor to know when your child has chicken pox?"

His love-hate relationship with the media is part of the symptoms. He loves attention but he hates being criticized. Look at his Twitter feed he was just bitching about SNL making fun of him.

Yes, Trump checks every box, including the last one according to many.

True, narcissists can often be charming which is why many people, even his critics have talked about how 'nice' he can be one-on-one. If they weren't charming to some extent then it would be difficult to imagine any of them getting married.

Sounds like everyone I know when they're having a bad day.

Anyone can experience any of those symptoms sometimes. Narcissists pretty much exhibit them all the time.

Part of the reason I am a left libertarian is because I do not trust most people with power, whether they be politicians, CEOs, etc. The people who seek that power are often at the very least egotists and at worst narcissists (however I have never seen a case in the USA as bad as Trump's).

100% agree, except I guess I would be considered a Right Libertarian or actual Liberal (age of enlightenment Liberal not the current perversion of it). The old adage "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" is every bit as true now as it was when Lord Acton first wrote it. Sadly, people have seem to have forgotten not only how true that statement is but that there was more to it than just that line.
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority

Just an oversight thanks for the the correction

Admit it, you just didn't want to say you thought Trump was rather charming.

Young Trump was very Charming older Trump just descended into bloviating. If you watch the video video of him in the 80s on the Phil Donahue show he is very charming and rather honest and his answers to some challenging questions put to him are actually plausible,.
Older Trump is just a bloviating blowhard who rarely says anything that's true. Older Trump which is today he is simply awful repugnant and stupid

People who really believe they're great and smart don't need to remind everybody.

Exactly! That's why I'm not reminding you all in this post! I could remind you how great and smart I am ten times a day but I don't! That's all the proof you need.

( This is by way of a joke. I do not really think I am totally great and smart .)
