Why do poorer, less educated whites still support Trump?

Do you know why genetic testing companies like '23 and Me' and 'Ancestry' are so popular? Why are so many interested in their genetics? Sure, there's some people want to know their what their DNA tests will reveal because some diseases are embedded in our genetic code that may put them at risk for certain health conditions. But most people that pay the $69 or so for genetic testing are looking for some information about their heritage and the culture of their ancestors. Finding out genetic heritage gives people a deeper connection to the places that they're “from" and gives them a sense of culture.

Where I live there is a huge amount of "culture". Italian, Irish, and others at smaller rates. Its laughable to think they voted for Trump because they somehow lost their heritage. A lot of people had many different reasons to vote for Trump. The vast majority that voted for him voted for him because he was running as a Republican and Clinton was running as a Democrat. That is really as simple as it is.

They support him because he's doing what they want done: harm inflicted on those they perceive to be their enemies.

A better question would be why to black Americans continue to vote democrat? What have they done for Black Americans? Make promises and not deliver. The economy for blacks has never been as good as in Trumps economy. Over the past 50 years the number of single parent black families has tripled and the ratio of black children born out of wedlock is about 3 to 1. That is what the democrats have gotten them. Tear down history so black americans don't see that its the party of Lincoln that freed the slaves and its the southern Democrats that governed over reconstruction and and Jim Crow.

Maybe you should start working from the idea that black people actually do know what's in their own best interests and work from there. You know, instead of declaring you know what's better for black people than black people do.

The southern Democrats that governed over reconstruction? They're Republicans now.

Right now I live in Tennessee, and out of the pocket of economic growth of the cities are the rural community. You can be in a rural community, and ever place you look around -- is trees and mountains. Yes, it is beautiful to see. People from out of state come to see the beauty of the Great Smokey Mountains. They come to Dollywood and spend millions of dollars. If you live 20 miles away, wealth is not there for you. There is illegal moonshine produced, and the local population becomes insane because the equipment was welled together with lead. With cooking the lead is leashed out and people get lead poisoning. If you live in the spine of the mountains, the local religion deals with snakes. It is illegal except for West Virginia. And a number of times in the year, someone dies with a snake bite. There is natural caves and abandoned coal mines. Illegal drugs are made there because there is no heat source. Cars are stolen and there are chop shops all over the place. Weed is produced in the natural forest, and produced close to the state boarder to prevent state control. Nice to see but you do not want to engage the local population. But it is Trump country.

East Tennessee has always been a Democrat bastion. What did you do to change that?

Every culture you mentioned are white cultures. Do they still speak those foreign languages, celebrate those holidays from the 'old country', sing those songs their grandmothers used to sing in Ireland? Do they live in cities with Muslims, Sikhs, Jews and people from Somalia and Haiti? Do they shop, work and play with people of many colors from many countries and many cultures? That's what makes it different, that's what diversity really is.

I have little sympathy for whites living in white communities not liking to see all our minorities in our urban centers. Of course they're not all, but a large percentage Trump's supporters are racist, admitted or not or don't want to become a white minority. They need to get over that.

In 1992, I drove out west. Went from Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and back to Michigan. With the fly over states, there is really nothing out there. In Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, the gas pumps were from the 1960's when gas was under a $1 a gallon. When I was in Idaho, in 1992, I stopped to get gas and it said regular gasoline. I tried to place it in my car, and the handle would not fit. The reason being, it was regular leaded gasoline of the 1970's. And this was in 1992.

Those primary red states, with a heavy white population, and nobody from outside of the state willing to move there. They were settled by the northern Europeans, that came to America to fight in the Civil War. They got $300 to accept someone not willing to fight, they lived after the war, and not on the homestead act and moved out west. Nobody wants to move there, there is nothing for them to do, and they do not want to see their state become the next California.

Meaning they're less liberal 'cause a student coming out of American's public educational system is indoctrinated as liberal.

I was being fictitious, but conspiracy theories aside, maybe I was right...

Ahhh right I forgot, the white cultures are racist blah blah blah. Many of them do speak their native languages. We also have a lot of Puerto Ricans and many other "non-white" cultures too. Mostly everyone gets along. Sorry if this goes against your narrative of all white people being racists.

Rush Limbaugh’s bumper music is “My City was Gone.” Whether or not Rush chose that due to the title or for its ominous beat, the title says something. In my view his appeal represents loss. Working class guy could bring home a decent, often union-influenced wage, his wife might be able to stay at home, he might even have a boat. Then wages stagnate, jobs go elsewhere, blacks are able to compete in integrated unions, women are getting uppity about their rights, and when they call a business they are told to press one for English. They or their parents or grandparents were part of the greatest generation that beat Germany and Japan, then saw the betrayal as the Iron Curtain fell. And some long haired kids said that Vietnam, which looked to them like Korea, was an immoral adventure. They were known as Reagan Democrats. One could argue then that they voted against their economic interests. You can make the same case now with Trump supporters. As long as the economic numbers stay positive, in my view they will tolerate Trump’s racial comments and lies. One has to admit that his disruptive style is entertaining, but does anyone think he will make blue collar workplaces safer, support an increase in the minimum wage, etc.? His administration has already approved a pesticide that causes birth defects and removed the requirement that the govt consider companies’ safety records when they award contracts.

I explained my view in another thread that these people live in areas of the country where there's very little, if any, diversity. They have no culture since their ancestors that immigrated to the US many years ago are gone. If those ancestors came from Germany, Scotland, Ukraine, England, wherever they came from, the culture they brought has been lost throughout the decades. People that live in the larger cities where people grow up with an extremely diverse culture absorb all of those cultures and even more important, accept them and appreciate them.

Trump supporters come from mostly red states, where there's smaller land-bound towns and cities with little if any diversity. So they have created their own culture based solely on the color of their skin and they are being fed fear by Trump of losing that identity and 'faux culture' of theirs by creating a fear in them that they're going to lose their culture (whiteness) forever to people with brown or black skin that speak foreign languages and have religious beliefs different than their own christian religions.

People are supporting him out of fear.

Very good analysis!!!

Well if you ever get tired of Germanic influence, you could always hop south across the state line, and see what's up with the Italians & Irish!

:2razz:

Done that, the only reason to ever go to Chicago is concerts, gyro's and Italian beefs, extra peppers, double dipped!!!

Only place I have ever been to get the very best of those two sandwiches!!!

Added, the Grateful Dead at Soldiers Field!!!

Chicago is a city that people from Michigan to vacation and have fun in. I have been there at least two dozen times and it is terrific. But I got instantly sick from the Italian beef at 10AM. Bad move on my part and tank heaven for hotel rest rooms. Thin pizza is the best. Thick is for tourists.

I have always wondered, why is there a market for illegal moonshine, is it the price or the quality?

I really want to know as the only thing I can think of is that it is something to do with race. I am not saying it is racist, at least not overly racist, but I can not think of another explanation after all of the things that trump iis doing that hurts that group of people. I could name a few, but I am sure you can understand what I a talking about. So, why ae they still supporting him?

Free markets, deregulation, religious liberty, and rebuilding of national pride help the poor and not hurt them.

You start with the presupposition the American comm... I mean democratic party’s policies actually help poor uneducated people when in fact the secularization of society and growth of the welfare state have built underclasses of sick people who have little chance of rising up.

Increased unreasonable workplace regulations and minimum wages do not help blue collar workers. This is a lie. First off nearly all workplace accidents are caused by employees themselves disregarding safety rules that already exist (and which the employers want them to follow) and minimum wage reduces employment among low wage workers.

It was government regulation that killed most of these communities anyway, there was this lie about the spotted owl, an out of control EPA shuttering the smelters, no new oil refineries, etc

I disagree about the pizza, I like thick crust, but you don't have to go to Chicago to get a great pizza.

Sorry you got a bad Italian beef, just get back on the horse next time you're there.

I usually avoid Chicago with a passion, I have been steelhead fishing in Michigan and coming home I would go four or five hours out of my way and go through the UP rather than Chicago.

Although gyro's are better than pasties!!!

Your own post gives you the answer..................less educated. This is certainly seen over and over again on this message board.

This is a horribly unrealistic comment. There are plenty of Trump voters that don't live in backwoords hick nations.

What's really troubling is that he seems to think that anyone who does not live in the big cities has no culture or diversity.

He showed in his later comment that he believes only non-white people have culture. Its a pretty common meme these days that shows up in the far progressive left.

What a load of complete bull****.

Are you then saying that Trump is full of bull****?

Commentary: "Following the Nevada caucuses, during his victory speech, Donald Trump boasted, 'The uneducated people love me, and I love the uneducated people.' This declaration struck me as an odd thing to say."

So when farmworkers were sprayed by airplanes with poison as they worked in the field, you had no problem with that? If they got sick it was their own fault because they insisted on breathing, I suppose. Likewise when they were forced to use a short-handled hoe and stay bent over 7-8 hours a day, breaking their backs, you would have opposed its prohibition? And there usually is a warning WOOSH! as a coal mine starts to collapse, but stupid miners can't run fast enough to escape. And let's not forget the chicken processing plant fire that killed 25 in NC 1991, because the dumb workers couldn't pick the locks on the secured fire doors.

Finally, it always amazes me how conservatives oppose unions, oppose things like unemployment insurance, work safety regulations, etc., but get all dewy-eyed with their love of workers when a minimum wage increase is suggested.

You are assuming that most poor people want help from the government. Maybe some of them want the government to get out of the way of business, so there will be jobs.

Of course, you think that creating jobs is the government's job.

Why do poorer, less educated whites still support Trump?

Red:
The inclusion of the "red" criterion seems to me sufficient for answering the question. Hell, it effectively makes it a self-answering question.
