We can no longer to afford to allow hateful bile to be transmitted over the internet via social media and hate sites. We need to take action right now to deal with this. Every second we allow our internet to be conduits of hate we get closer to the next hate slaughter, and we have a lot more guns and bigots than New Zealand. Start fining people who say bigoted things on Twitter and shut down sewers like 4chan and Stormfront.

What's more important: Lives or following our antiquated, centuries-old "kawnstitution"?

It depends on how you go about it. There are already laws out there that can be used against people for suggesting that you go out and kill someone else. The problem lies with free speech. Got to be careful how far you want to go with limiting free speech.

The Internet is speading hate the same way radio spread Nazi propaganda. I don't think there is much we can do about it.

The Internet is great but it also helps spread ideas like flat earth, conspiracy theories, racism and hate. ISIS is a prefect example of how hate can spread over the Internet.

Powerful governments are responsible for exponentially more deaths than the various individual attacks.

The First Amendment is specifically meant to protect against authoritarian people who think as you do.

You do know that the internet is international, right?

Do you intend to impose your standards of "hate" on everyone else in the world? If so, how?

The most murderous regimes used hate speech and bullying to also secure power. When is the time to worry about Fascists? Before or after they take power?

Hate speech is an abomination, but it is also difficult to control from a government standpoint, especially on the internet. The best thing you can do is to call out those who use it and point out how damaging it can be. Moderators should expunge it, and for those who thinly disguise their hatred, call them out for what they truly are: racists, homophobes, bigots, etc.

It's hard to do when our president called for a Muslim ban.

Wrong...the most murderous regimes to ever exist use speech that talks about equality and justice.

Not really. It was more a hate of the capitalist pigs or hate of the Jews. It's always hate. Like hate of undocumented immigrants.

Absolutely agree. All hateful speech should be abolished immediately. Not just from social media, but from all aspects of our lives. Why should we have to tolerate hate, from anyone, anywhere?

Fortunately, nowdays it would not be impossible to implement a law that abolishes hate speech. Almost every American has a cell phone with them at all times. Why not force manufacturers to add a device to every cell phone that records the owner's speech and sends it to the government for evaluation?

Maybe you think it would be too much work to analyze and evaluate every American's every word. But you are forgetting that computers are more powerful now than ever. Software could do some of the preliminary work of screening for hate speech.

For example, if the phrase "I think Trump is doing a good job" is detected, that would set a flag, indicating that the speaker should be monitored and all his/her speech would be analyzed carefully by human experts.

I am so excited by the idea of screening everyone's speech for hateful remarks! I'm sure you all agree.

There are days when I hate myself. Will I be allowed to say that?

when do laws banning freedoms in order to stop the possibility of fascism, become the thing it hates?

The BIG question? Who decides what hateful bile is?
That is the sticky part of trying to control speech.

Yes, really....that's the entire premise of socialism and communism, which have brought about the most murderous regimes to ever exist.

Can't tell if OP is serious, or if this is a poe thread...

If the Internet is to exist in a useful open format, there will always be the means to get around such regulation.

For this to work, we'll need a feasible way to enforce these rules in the face of VPNs and open development.

As other have mentioned, the international nature of this complicates it further. Who shall have this authority over the Internet? How do we expect all nations to accept your standard?

Going after one avenue of information exchange does nothing for the underline problem, people learning hate and the real issue that presents. We can talk about the "kawnstitution" and all your desires to get around it, but that avoids the larger issue for you to declare a very hollow victory.

The reality is before the internet there were plenty of other means to spread messages of hate resulting in loss of life. All the internet did was accelerate the means to spread those messages and allow a small bit of anonymity with engaging in it.

Your challenge to prevent loss of life is dealing with helping people unlearn the things they do.

Consistently we ignore the principle of social faults generally being solved with evolution and education, and default with your thinking on censorship and "taking action to deal with this" and generally speaking that means punishing everyone in hopes those who do hate quit spreading their messages. And consistently you are wrong in appealing to governance to get around the ole "kawnstitution" until you quit seeing and hearing what you do not want to see and hear.

Hint... the more you punish and censor, the worse it will get. And result in loss of life anyway. Historically and socially proven... consistently.

You cannot silence speech, just ask china and its thriving VPN market. The way to battle hate is they education and other speech.

Also it is easy to divide them on the extreme but finding where to draw the exact line in the grey area is much harder and you are grossly underestimate the problem. Promoting violence or chaos is already illegal. Anything more is too much. If you need force to silence speech you already lost. Stop thinking like a conservative, your treating the effect rather then the cause and creating an ineffective police state.

Are you suggesting your posts on DP should be banned?

There is no hate for undocumented immigrants, just the call for American law and order when it comes to illegal aliens.
