Gov. Newsom orders halt to California’s death penalty

Gov. Gavin Newsom is declaring a moratorium on California’s death penalty Wednesday and granting reprieves to 737 condemned prisoners on the nation’s largest Death Row, calling capital punishment discriminatory and immoral.

In the process, he is ordering an end to prison officials’ struggle for more than a decade to devise lethal injection procedures that will pass muster in federal courts. Newsom also ordered an immediate shutdown of the state’s execution chamber at San Quentin prison, where the last execution was carried out in 2006.

Especially since the voters vote to “Git ‘er done”.
Prop (62)Repeal was 46%
Not repeal was 52%
Another proposition (66) was to fix the appeal limit to five years
Pass at 51% to 49.

The biggest cause of death on death row is old age. Now they want them treated like regular lifers.

Just a little trivia that may surprise some people. Gavin Newsom's first wife is none other than Donald Jr's. new squeeze, Kimberly Guilfoyle, formerly a Fox Network personality on The Five. Kimberly Guilfoyle was fired from The Five after passing around some lewd photos of male genitalia to her cast-mates. I'm not saying the private parts belonged to Don Jr. but they were dating at that time despite him still being married and living with his now former wife, Vanessa.

I don't think he's overturning the vote. Just halting executions for now. They can be restarted at any time. At least that's how I read it.

What the hell took them so long? It never occurred to me a progressive state like Cali had clung to barbarianism.

Lets see if I can think like a Trumpet.

"Well now we know where all the Venezuelan MS-whatever murderers will be going [once we have thoroughly fregged up yet another country south of our border]."

Weak....I know.....best I can do.....I'm not a Trumpet.

Hmm... because locking someone up in a cage until they die (LWOP) is not barbaric. Is it not also barbaric for other inmates to be placed among those who have absolutely nothing to lose if they commit further violent acts?

There's no easy solutions for those instances when one is deemed unfit to be free in civil society. But I find the death penalty particularly abhorrent for two primary reasons:

1] Mistakes cannot be rectified; One cannot be brought back from the dead.

2] I do not believe we have the right to play God, to no immediate physical threat.

Some people have it coming. CP is a humane way to deal with barbarism. Here is a case that took place back when I was attending the University of Akron so it always held my attention.

The act of 'barbarism' took place Sept 1, 1986. Justice was served October 14, 2008

Best take on the DP ever-from one time former US Attorney, now the Honorable Edmund Sargus, Jr, United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, Eastern Division (Columbus)

"some people deserve to fry, but I don't think the government should have the power to fry people"

...

Gavin Newsom was humping the wife of his former chief-of-staff while still married to Kimberly. **** happens.

I would like to see that photo that got passed around ... (grin).

Great guy-one of the finest people I ever met working for the DOJ. Smart, personable, and never took himself too seriously. Great man.

I would think the bolded would be a great quality to have, behind the bench.

Humble man-his father was the counsel for the mine workers-a big union back in the day. In the Democratic Party primary, the contenders were Col. John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum (who after losing the primary, beat the GOP Incumbent Taft in the post Watergate thrashing the GOP took in 76 when Carter won as well). Metzenbaum argued Glenn couldn't get union support and then Sargus Sr came out and said the UMWs were endorsing Glenn. That sewed it up for Glenn. I ran into Judge Sargus right after Clinton nominated him and I congratulated him on his nomination and he noted-well "Dad died before Senator Glenn could pay him back for his help so I lucked out". Lots of people I talked to think he was one of the three best US attorneys in that district in the last 50 years.

The definition of humane is, 'having or showing compassion or benevolence'. So who's on the receiving end of all this compassion? Society?!? Since when do conservatives give a s__t about our society as a whole? I've got mine, screw you is branded onto every conservative baby's butt when they're born. Or is all this compassion intended for the family of the victims?

If killing someone it is an act of compassion, wouldn't torturing someone to death be even more so? How about allowing the victim's family members to inflict some of your humanity themselves?

CP is revenge and no less barbaric...

OK, yet the mission of a prison is far different for those who will not be returned to society (providing the minimum required for survival) and for those who will be (preparing them to lead more productive lives). Mixing the two populations, IMHO, is barbaric.

Partisan Hackery content-very high

useful commentary-very low

since when do left-wingers do anything but pretend to care while trying to get rich off of the wealth of others? See we both can make silly comments.

The fact is-there are people who honestly believe giving someone a life sentence-often in poor conditions is worse than killing them. Others believe that if you do say what Ted Bundy did, you cheapen the lives of the victims by not imposing a death penalty.

"some people deserve to fry, but I don't think the government should have the power to fry people"

Especially when you consider that killing people is what the worst governments do. Imagine if there was no death penalty in Soviet Russia or in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge.

If we begin to value life more and agree that there's no good reason to kill people then we put a limit on human evil.

The Russians will claim they didn't execute lots of those killed during the stalinist purge. They merely allowed those people to starve to death

It's a BS argument but I see it coming. It's like those odious holocaust deniers who try to soften the crimes of the Nazis by claiming that the Jews weren't gassed or shot-they died of typhus, cholera or other communicable diseases that are bound to occur when people are crammed together in unsanitary conditions with improper nutrition and medical services.

Well yes, CP is a very partisan issue, but I find your silly comment a little confusing.

Depending on how severe, I agree that a life sentence served in poor conditions could be worst than being put to death, we call that torture. But I thought we were talking about punishing criminals humanly. For the 1% of convicts who find prison life in humane conditions too unbearable, they'll find a way to take their own life. And I have no problem with that.

Other people believe that imposing the death penalty cheapens everyone's life...

Could cost him politically.

1. On the contrary. It reassures him reelection and a place of honor in the bleeding hearts' hall of fame.

2. It shows that he cares nothing for the families of murdered victims.

3. It is furthermore an empty gesture. For all intents and purposes, everyone knows that those 700+ individuals on Death Row will never be executed.

4. The governor realizes that the state is fast a-changing, and he wants to kiss up to the activists.

5. Expect more murders as bad actors realize that there is no longer even a remote possibility that they will be executed.

If your point in this post was to call out Cooey as someone who deserved the death penalty I will say that I agree with you with every fiber of my being. That story still haunts me, 3 decades later.

That son of a bitch, with his sick friends, tossed that piece of sidewalk on to their car and then they pretended to be good Samaritans with those girls. Took them to a payphone to call the police, and if I remember right, Cooey even talked to Wendy's mom. Then they took them to a field where they tortured and raped those poor girls for hours before killing them both. Then Cooey went off bragging about what he did. And he had their personal belongings, which he stole, in his possession. He tried to get off by claiming he was obese or something. Holy hell.

There are instances when the DP is absolutely warranted, and that is one of them. I hope he is burning in Hell and I wish he had been put to death long before he was.

Great job of IGNORING the expressed will of the voters!! Bravo!
