Smollett Surrenders arrested

The media reported on an alleged criminal act, charges were brought up, and investigation launched. They reported that. They didn't make up the story. Now they are reporting that it has been found that Smollett had lied, they had been reporting for days now that there were inconsistencies with the story and that it was possible that he made it up. Now that it has come out that he did, they are reporting that eh made it up.

Social media isn't controlled, if you want to live your life by that trash dumpster, be my guest. But it's stupid to pay it any attention. The media, on the other hand, did not make up the story. They reported what had been alleged, and continued to evolve their story as the story evolved.

What's with the "punish the media" attitude? This is not healthy. The media has long reported stories as stories unfolded, and there have been stories in the past in which a supposed victim had made everything up. Should they face retribution for that too?

Distinguishing that difference is the whole reason most the media outlets used the word "allegedly" in reporting it. Now, if you are talking about the average Joe blabbing away on social media, yeah, many didn't make that distinction. But who cares what they say?

I dont know...maybe a little bit of humility and a commitment to stop jumping to the worst of the worst in every case might be in order until the actual facts are known. This case was no different than the Covington case, nor any of the nearly 3 dozen instances of hoax cries of racial discrimination and attacks over the last several.

I thought it particularly sad that even now, CNN hosts are claiming that really...he should have come to THEM with his story and they could have helped provide him better cover. “He lost because — not his fault. Maybe people were — I don’t know what they were saying to him, maybe because of his representatives. Who knows? But it was handled poorly.”

Because they ran with it and reported it as a fact. All they had to do was call it an alleged attack. They irresponsibly didn't do that.

I agree, they SHOULD have used the word "allegedly". But what I quoted was from CNN and they didn't.
I'm afraid in this case, from what I saw, most reported it the same way ... and it was the straight news reports, not their opinion people or contributors.
