'It's called the First Amendment': Pundits decry Trump call for 'retribution' against 'SNL'

tRump's lack of a sense of humor made me think of Nate Whire's reply to the question "Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?"

the emphasis below is mine:

"A few things spring to mind.
Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever.
I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs
; he only crows or jeers.
And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.
Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.
There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
* Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
* You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.
After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of ****. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.
He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumps of hair and scream in anguish:
'My God… what… have… I… created?
If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

Seems like a few LWers have called for boycotts of companies that support conservative ideologies;

I sure have and I am not even liberal.

I look forward to a clearly defined left and right retail environment until Trump is out of office.

That's exactly b/c of what Trump does on a daily/hourly basis!!!!!!!!! They didn't change their formula and in fact had him on the show.
Actually what you said proves that conservatives just like to complain for no particular reason.

1. SNL makes fun of Donald
2. Donald cries.
3. Conservatives cries.
4. SNL makes fun of Donald again
5. Donald Cries.
6. Conservatives cries

It's just a circle jerk of outrage for you people and then you have the audacity to complain about the liberal boycotts, that work! :lamo Go arrange a boycott SNL, see how well that works, but wait you just want to be outraged about something and it doesn't matter what so you'll keep watching it.

Maybe, I wasn't clear. I wasn't "crying" because the MSM makes fun of Trump, I was making fun of YOU GUYS whining because Trump decided to talk back. Unlike liberals, I defend your (the left's) right to speak your mind; and while it seems to cause massive panty wadding when I do, I exercise MY right to speak.

PS: Wasn't the premise of this thread based on you guys crying about something Trump said? Just sayin'

If I have a chance, I would vote for President Trump again in a New York minute. He's been doing a very good job in the face of unprecedented and vicious opposition.

BUT I agree that he should stop his angry tweets.

And he should learn to laugh at himself.

For example, he should definitely attend the Washington Correspondents' annual dinner. His appearance would earn C-SPAN something that it rarely gets: huge ratings.

As for SNL, it should be below his dignity to refer to its skits.

Many of the President's supporters agree that his manner at times is a little too "colorful" for his own good. I hope that our gracious First Lady will have a heart-to-heart with him.

All I said was trump is pathetic. Nothing about stopping you guys from saying anything. But you sure did have a lot to say about that.

LOL, excuse me while I grab a sponge to sop up the dripping irony.

You understand the First Amendment works both ways, right? If the media wants to garner huge ratings for continuous mockery of the President, the President has the right to speak back. Seems like a few LWers have called for boycotts of companies that support conservative ideologies; why then is it a shock when a conservative speaks back about boycotting LW media?

Pushing back would be one thing....calling for retribution is a whole other kettle of fish.

For someone who made his bones calling people childish names and pushing conspiracy theories (Ted Cruz' dad is looking right at ya), he sure is quick to get his feathers all ruffled up.

You might have a case if in the course of talking back, he hadn't called directly for investigations and retribution.

Acceptable response: "SNL is a stupid show and anyone who believes anything they see on it is a moron."
Super stupid, highly questionable response: What the President said.

See the difference? I'm gonna guess no, but heres hoping.

Why? Libs have been doing it his entire term. Turnabout is fair play.

You mean he quickly responds to the **** thrown it him? Yes, you are correct, he doesn't suffer fools lightly.

GASP??!!! He PUSHED BACK against the most unfunny "comedy show" on TV, which posted its LOWEST RATINGS OF THE YEAR, so far, on Saturday.

Their ratings will be much higher now that the POTUS has given them lots of advertising with this.

LOL, sure, a real distinction there.

"They started it."

Really, people?

What kind of crybaby are you? They poked some fun at him (using his own words and mannerisms, for the record) and you want to cry about it. Sack up, homie.

Given the example I used and you responded to......in what world was ANY of that true? Maybe in bizzaro, Trump supporter world, it might have been.....but only because actual facts just don't matter there. Here in the real world, he was up on stage during the primaries tossing out conspiracy theories and calling people names.

Now THATS a real man, right?

Uh, maybe you haven't noticed that this thread is about the LW media whining, not the right or the President.

Nope, just more butthurt jabberwocky.

The problem isn't that he said anything about SNL.....its the fact that he openly called for investigations and retribution. That is some serious ****. Or is this another one of those things we aren't supposed to take literally even though he put it in text AND pressed send?

How pathetic. All this guy does is attack people who make fun of him, why can't he take a joke? He always does the most outlandish stuff and then says he was joking. Double Standards donny? Alec Baldwin hit a nerve? No one is being unfair to you.

This should be the only thing (political) people are talking about on this forum. This guy is crazy! He's the President ranting about how "unfair" it is that Alec Baldwin is allowed to make fun of him? Seriously, he's not mentally fit to be president, and that's what the 25th amendment is for. Just get him out of office. I've been opposed to impeaching him because I always thought Mike Pence was capable of actually ruining the country while Trump would merely make a fool out of himself and cause 4 years of arguments over the wall without any legislation actually passing. But this is too much, he's like my grandfather was when he had late stage dementia and would rant about how unfair it was that doctors wouldn't let him drive.

How do you justify your support for a person who thinks SNL is "real collusion"?

Someone should have bitchslapped SNL years ago. They are no longer a comedy show, they have become a mouthpiece for the liberal fake news.

Ah, poor babies.

LOL, you guys have been calling for investigations and retributions every time Trump burps. Man up and accept you're getting your treatment back at you.

Fox and Friends on line 1.....they are apparently still trying to convince people they are news.

SNL is a comedy show that makes fun of everyone. It just so happens that Trump and his admin provide a lot to spoof.

So show us where they have dinged a liberal.
