Walls are only as good as the better benefits of getting over/under the wall are.

As the border wall grows, smuggling tunnels proliferate — High Country News

After the hour-long tour was over, we clambered back up the ladder and emerged into the glare of the Southern California sun. Through the slats in the wall, the cars and people and buildings of Mexico were visible just a few feet away. From here, the border didn’t look like a battlefield, anymore than the wall seemed like an impenetrable barrier. In the end, it appeared, all it would take is some digging.

Donald Trump said:
“Don’t give up. Don’t allow it to happen. If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it. Go over it. Go around it. But get to the other side of that wall.”

Here we go...

...Or do they???

Assuming this is real only one of these has a positive slope when the wall was placed there and another one randomly increases about two years after construction before falling again. If apprehensions were dropping before the wall/fencing how do you use that as proof positive the wall is responsible for it?

Lol at the phrase "all it would take is some digging." Digging tunnels is hard work. No one ever said that walls are the end all be all of border control. Just because it doesn't eliminate all illegal crossings doesn't make it worthless. Locking your doors at night doesn't prevent all robberies, but you still do it.

You left out the obvious - simply going around the walled sections.

Or find yourself a relative in the US and get yourself in through chain migration.

As usual, a right winger trying to simplify **** and make dumb, dishonest posts.

Walls work in populated areas. Democrats support those walls, as they have funded and shown support for in the past. Trump and the rest of the right wing idiots want to build a wall along the entire border, along vast, desolate areas not populated. A wall there is a waste. Let alone the environmental, legal and financial ramifications of building that dumb wall.

Even then, people get around those walls. But in those areas, you can't just have poeple willy nilly being able to walk across the border that are living right on the other side of it

Mexicans don't like the idea of a wall.

Oh well. They'll get over it.

(or maybe under it or around it.)

That or getting a tourist, student or work 'temporary' visa.

The whole debate over the wall is so tiresome. We need so much more than just the wall, yet we can't even get that.

I also don't keep $10,000 cash my house and let the world know about it.

If you have something people want and can get, nothing will stop them.

I don't know about that, banks have done a pretty good job at preventing people from getting at their money. A big part of that is not allowing people to just walk into the vault.

yet Banks have been robbed countless times.

Banks still get robbed daily.

It's not really comparable though. Robbing a bank will make you go on the run and have people actively pursuing you. Getting over the border will get you a better life, a good job, and if you have citizen kids -benefits. There are so much more benefits to get into the US than to rob a bank.

Of course it's comparable. Coming into our country illegally gets you those benefits but you can be deported at any time. Robbing a bank gets you money, but you can be arrested at any time.

And I showed the statistics to another poster. The amount robbed in any given year comes to 0.001% of just 1 of our commercial banks. It's a negligible number. Meanwhile, we have 20-30 million illegals here, representing 5-10% of our total population. It's crazy.

True and closing that gap might be a possibility if the two key factors didn't exist: terrain and border property owners who will fight it.

Also the ability to claim (request?) asylum at a port of entry (or anywhere?) and get a hearing date set years from that claim (request?).

That’s a huge part of the problem. Being taken care of from cradle to the grave is an incentive. And crooked employers that give them jobs at slave wages. They need to be prosecuted.!

No, the biggest part of that is having a legal penalty for taking money that doesn't belong to you. Walls don't keep people from stealing. Laws and the ability to enforce them keep people from stealing. A bank without police in quick response distance is a bank without money, regardless of the strength of its walls. A wall without border patrol officers within quick interception distance is no obstacle to illegal border crossers and is therefore a giant waste of taxpayer dollars.

Put cameras, alarms, and border patrol nearby, and a 30' concrete barrier topped with razor wire is hardly any more effective than a 10' chain link fence topped with barbed wire. The agents are the ones stopping the illegals, not the wall.

Human guards are the only defense against illegal border crossing. Fences can help in heavily patrolled high population areas. They can never replace the guards, and are utterly useless in unpatrolled areas. And making them taller and thicker in every case is a foolish waste of money.
