Trump offers socialism for the rich, capitalism for everyone else | Robert Reich | Opinion | The Guardian

To a conservative mind, socialism is getting something for nothing. Yet this is what the president promotes for the wealthy

merica will never be a socialist country,” Donald Trump declared in his State of the Union address. Someone should alert Trump that America is now a hotbed of socialism. But it is socialism for the rich. Everyone else is treated to harsh capitalism.

In the conservative mind, socialism means getting something for doing nothing. That pretty much describes the $21bn saved by the nation’s largest banks last year thanks to Trump’s tax cuts, some of which went into massive bonuses for bank executives. On the other hand, more than 4,000 lower-level bank employees got a big dose of harsh capitalism. They lost their jobs.

Socialism has joined the southern border wall & the caravans of migrants to Trump's list of boogeymen intended to scare people into voting for him. But behind the scenes he has created a socialist utopia for the rich members of Mar-A-Lago & his other high-priced golf clubs, hotels & resorts.

I have an old set of king cobra clubs that I just love and I suck at golf. Now if the prez wants to give me a free round at mar-a-lago, I'll give my clubs a washing before I play there.

That's the real sad part that the average republican seems to not understand or doesn't want to understand. It's socialism for the top and capitalism for the bottom. We the taxpayers will save the 'free markets' after the greedy rich crash them.

Class war rhetoric to the max. It hasn't changed in decades and decades. It's the exact same crap, over and over and over and over.

Yup, the rich have been taking all the wealth over and over and over again, nothing change, they have declared war on the 99%

I think it is fair to say at this point that when this absurd Trumpian nonsense is all said and done the cost to the country in real dollars will be eye popping and astronomical.

Do me a favor and chant this over and over again a few hundred thousand more times. It just hasn't sunk in yet so I think I need you to keep repeating it.

Sorry but that doesn't prove him wrong. You should try again for our entertainment. Lmao

For the folks at the top, it is all about socializing the risk and capitalizing the profit. Two examples come to mind:

First, in the pharmaceutical industry, the government invests millions of dollars in R&D searching for the latest medical breakthrough, and when that breakthrough comes, private companies then capitalize. Of course, they're not required to reimburse the taxpayers for that gift. For every one hundred drugs that go into clinical trials, only about one makes it to the market.

Second, sports stadiums. Taxpayers are footing the bill so that millionaire players and billionaire owners can squabble over who gets the next few million. And when the owners secure a better deal elsewhere, the taxpayers are on the hook for a stadium to maintain. It's a disgrace.

NASA did all the heavy lifting and now we enjoy live sporting events around the world, GPS, etc. No one is suggesting that the behemoth corporations that financially benefit from the blood and treasure invested in space pay back the taxpayers.

If you've got a risk, invite the taxpayers to join you. However, once the risk is over, take the profits and tell the taxpayers to F off! That's socialism!

Yes the GOP is trying very hard to label the Democratic party socialist, just another scare tactic

The OP quote claims that keeping your money rather than the government taking all of it by taxes is "getting something for nothing," or "socialism."

The OP quote is truly bizarre as it is 100% from a socialist perspective. Banks (like nearly everyone) now pay less taxes under Trump. From this, the OPer claims that anyone who gets a tax break or uses tax deductions is a "socialist" because if you get to keep any of your own money you are "getting something for nothing." In fact it means you are allowed to keep more of what you have and earned.

In the OP source's opinion, every dollar you have is you "getting something for nothing" because the government didn't take it in taxes.

"Taking'it?

Only the Govt takes wealth.

As usual, you have no argument, just bull****. Just a paid corporate shill spreading bull**** around the internet. How many forums do you spread your **** on?

Sorry but that doesn't prove him wrong. You should try again for our entertainment. Lmao

You are talking to someone who thinks tax cuts creates jobs. Even after all the facts. This is just projection ,since he's been telling himself over and over "tax cuts creates jobs" and spreading this lie on multiple forums.

Aren't the Democrats gladly embracing more socialism?

Why are you pretending it's the GOP doing it

I am on three forums and one of my favorite things to do is attack petulant hyper-partisans who only know how to speak in memes.

You are talking to someone who thinks tax cuts creates jobs. s.

Well, they kind of help don't they?
Unless you are saying that tax cuts have no impact on economic activity.
You couldn't possibly saying that could you?

Or that tax cuts actually COST jobs.

You couldn't possibly be saying that could you?

Regurgitated partisan cliches are not proven or disproven.

This post reeks ignorance, and shows that you do not understand the OP, nor basic economics.
Time for some economic self-education.

Socialism is when the businesses in a country are owned by the government or worker collectives. I don't see many Democrats calling for that. Most "far-left" Democrats seem to be actually calling for social democracy (capitalism with high taxes, a robust welfare system, etc.). I could be wrong, though, since I haven't read the Green New Deal yet (please correct me if I'm wrong about that).

Not pretending the right has always been for socialism for the wealthy.

Our tax code is set up so the very wealthiest not only pay no taxes, but all their businesses are subsidized.

Republicans piss and moan about a single mom who is on food stamps, but farmers that get enough subsidies to buy new combines every other year.

We are a socialist country whether you like it or not.

And that is a good thing, socialism on it's own is always doomed to fail, and that goes double for capitalism.

But a hybrid of the two, which is our government, we just constantly argue about the right mix.

Oh it is , is it?
Then how does this happen?

More bull****. Middle income earners got the HIGHEST MARGINAL RATE CUT (3-4%), enjoy the HUGE personal deduction, , as wages have risen 5.8% since Trump took over....

You do not seem appropriately equipped to describe a conservative anything.

It is passing strange to see these people posting with a variety of devices on their wifi. They have large tvs, a variety of clothing and riding in new cars or supersonic airplanes all while claiming to be progressive, communists, or socialists.....

They are none of those things......Merely pathologically confused.

Because that is not true however if it was it still wouldn't be fair as they possess 95% of the wealth.

The United States is not a socialist nation. Its businesses and industries are not owned by the government or worker collectives. Activities like collecting taxes, handing out food stamps, etc. are perfectly compatible with capitalism.
