What Motivates a Trump Supporter and Can Appeal to their Sense of Right and Wrong?

We do NOT elect anyone as President of a state. You are elected President of the entire nation. How many votes you receive in a state should not matter compared to what the entire nation says.

The founding fathers disagreed with this short sighted mob rule approach thankfully and created the way our presidential elections are held

What strikes me most about this kind of thing is how similar it is to the propaganda aimed at German citizens regarding Jews in the 30s. Add in the occasional poster who mentions how America would be better off if Trump supporters were all dead and the similarities become even more stark.

This kind of thing is designed to dehumanize a given human objective. It's why "pro-choice" people refer to pre-natal babies only in strict medical terms or, in some cases, as "an existential threat that only gets worse as it grows". It's a method of rationalizing the atrocity which either just occurred or is expected to soon follow the comment.

Yeah, we see a lot of racism today from Trump and many of his supporters, just like the Germans saw it from the Nazis. Heck, Trump publicly supported the KKK and Neo Nazis after Charlottesville.

Democrats will stay in power regardless. Elections have consequences. But is is funny how quickly you desert the "due process" you championed with Brett. I thought everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law?

If you read Trump supporter posts, many of them have two different sets of rules: One applies to their "friends", and another applies to their "enemies". Just look at how they attacked Obama, and yet Trump is far worse in nearly every category, but they cheer him on.

Like many on the right wing, you use and abuse the term MOB RULE showing strongly you are ignorant of its meaning. As such, you are employing a false premise which destroys and hope of a credible argument you hoped to make.

Elections decided by the voters are not mob rule. Never have been. Never will be. They are the pure expression of what Lincoln so wisely termed a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people'.

MOB RULE has nothing to do with that legal and orderly process.

This is a remarkably ignorant statement from someone who claims to have taught civics for 33 years.

I cannot help to think back to a TV show I saw in early 1963 which showed a young American Nazi failing miserably until he got some sage advice from a much older veteran who had lots of experience at whipping up hatred in the crowd and turning it into political power. When Adolf Hitler emerged from the dark shadows of an alley, I remember being genuinely shocked as a child.

The show was THE TWILIGHT ZONE and the episode was titled "He's Alive" and was written by Rod Serling. At the conclusion of the show, as was normal, Serling closes with the message of the show

Where will he go next, this phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a previous nightmare – Chicago? Los Angeles? Miami, Florida? Vincennes, Indiana? Syracuse, New York? Anyplace, everyplace, where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry. He's alive. He's alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that when he comes to your town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault on a people or any human being. He's alive because through these things we keep him alive.

Interesting that the last city he mentioned was New York.

Tonight he will be in El Paso.

Who is it that runs around in mobs with black masked hoodies calling their political opponents fascists and KKK so they can justify using violence against them?

Just saying you might want to settle down those Nazi comparisons because if we go down that road, your side might not come out looking so hot.

I agree.

Just as what they are fighting so definitively similar to the tactics of the Nazis.

You hit that nail on the head. Trump's rise to power and his bully politics are a mirror image of a guy named Adolf Hitler who it has been proven used the same attitude and hate to seize power and reign for 13 years exterminating 6,000,000,000 people in the ovens.

Dead on!

This is a remarkably ignorant statement from someone who claims to have taught civics for 33 years.

Very few of his posts are not remarkable ignorant. I take them with a grain of salt

This is a crap article. But then again, that's pretty much the only thing that comes out of Salon. This is just a bunch of ridiculous generalizations. For example, my dad is a MAGA supporter, although he's not as vocal about it as some people are. My dad is none of that crap. He's a good person, who I just happen to disagree with politically.

I think we need to stop with the blanket generalizations of large swaths of people. It's silly.

As with all such representations there are always extremes and exceptions. You say your dad was unlike that and I believe you. Having said that ever hard core Trump supporter I have encountered DOES match the mosaic in perfect detail.

And yet another example of why your side is such a joke and should be mocked mercilessly for being so ignorant and idiotic.

Power motivates them, just like power motivates Democrats to allow alleged rapists and racists to stay in office in Va

No.

Revenge. What I have experienced is there is a collective attitude that they have been wronged by society, that all these "librul" ideas mean black people get jobs and uneducated white guys don't. When they see a successful black person not an athlete, they burn with envy and resentment.

What they SHARE with hard core socialists is that they want government to fix their problems while the real people make changes in their lives to acomodate the new realities of the world

There really is something wrong with you.

Seriously.

This is nothing but self-serving claptrap that the Trump hating useful idiots will love.

Wow, I see three White House catch words in on sentence.

Do you guys have like phrase books issued to get the right style language - "Trump hating useful idiots..." that's new isn't it?

Oh, hating a hate filled **** off,. fraud is not either illegal nor unpopular. Yeah its hate. Now get over it.

It is only human to hate a son-of-a-bitch who has treated women as he has, natural to despise a hypocrite who made his wealth paying illegal aliens to build his palaces and golf courses and now assails their character a "rapists, thieves etc." If **** heads like him would OBEY THE ****ING LAW then these illegals would not come. Trump is among the smug who created and continue to foster this illegal activity.

Hating a man like that I suggest is far more psychologically healthy than hating all blacks, Muslims, Hispanics and women.

So lose the hate thing, no one cares who you accuse of hating. Your clan have enough hate for the whole world

"Lock her up"

"Punch him out, I'll pay the legal bills"

"He's Mexican (a lie) I won't get a fair trial.

That's all hateful **** where I come from and hate begets hate.

Interesting article. Really gets to the heart of what motivates those who support trump and gives little hope for others to burst their hate bubble. I think the articles very inciteful!

Trump voters are selfish: They love him because they identify with him | Salon.com

I think these attributes exist with most conservatives as well.

I am beginning to come to the conclusion that the national discussion is poisoned by what certain people at the top on both sides are putting into the political food chain.

Since many of us are aware of the fact that Trump, and some other candidates, but mostly Trump, have made extensive use of "Big Data" from firms like Cambridge Analytica, it is important to remember how CA worked, how it got its data, how it interpreted it, how it interpolated it, how it filtered it and how it applied it to the Trump model.
If we don't know that stuff, it is impossible to understand the Trump model at all.

Even though CA no longer is in business, make no mistake, dozens of other CA clones have sprung up in its place.
The song remains the same, the dance is the same dance, and the poisoned food chain is still poisoned.

As long as most of us derive our sources for issues discussion from the same poisoned food chain, we will continue to dance to the tune that Trump calls and act on his terms, as defined by him only.

It is necessary to UNPLUG for a while, remain at a distance. If we already have a well developed sense of what's what, of how society is supposed to operate, of how a healthy nation responds to stress and a sense of right and wrong, the "crisis du jour" and Trump defined criteria is unimportant, or shall we say, LESS important, because seeing as how we KNOW the Trump MODEL, it is important to apply OUR MODEL to the issues instead.

There really is something wrong with you.

Seriously.

Was that supposed to be an "in yo grill" moment?

BTW that just means you agree to be cooked.
No one is in anybody's GRILL.

Maybe you'll figure it out but not likely because you're a phony "homeboy", an artificial construct.

Revenge is not a motivator for the right. In my experience that’s more of a left leaning motivator. Trying to get back at people they feel have done them wrong is why they’ve embraced identity politics so fully. But hey we are free to disagree until thought crimes are enforced by whatever side chooses that totalitarian approach

This is a remarkably ignorant statement from someone who claims to have taught civics for 33 years.

What error of fact do you claim I have made?

I know it must just kill you that you can't keep the moral high ground because half of Virginia(the Democratic half) wants to keep the slimeball Democrats in power even though they're racists and rapists.

Ralph Northam resignation: polls show Virginians are divided - Vox

You dodged my question. When Roy Moore, a bigot, pedophile and ignorer of the separation of church and state you and your right-wing buddies were tripping all over yourselves to support him. If you're under the illusion you own any moral high-ground, that all went to **** when you elected trump and supported a piece of trailer trash like Moore.

So pathetic right-wing nuts constantly fall victim to their own bull****.

Now, for the last time, give me the name of one national democratic politician that supports Northam's racist past, or leave me the **** alone.

I am under no illusion as to the things trump has said and done. I know for a fact his behavior is horrible and unacceptable and that anyone that makes excuses for him or who defends him are actually supporting racism, greed, and homophobia.

I don't need to "unplug". I have eyes and ears that have heard and read things trump and the GOP are currently saying and doing.

Thanks, tho.

Sorry to say you are wrong.

Respond with opinion and nothing more kind of proves the right is shallow at least. "your experience" has absolutely no bearing on anything, if you want to make a case for the Trump based American right you need PROOF!

No one is going to believe anything ever from your crowd, after Der Leader has posted literally thousands of lies, usually hate filled. You make an opinion that IS NOT based on the reality that Trump, your man, is a dishonest, lying prick. If there was a "get even" mother****er in America it's Donald Trump.

But thanks for proving my assertion true, that the American right lies too much to be believed.

See the kiddy story about the boy who cried "wolf!"

Kind of interesting, news yesterday claims Trumps approval ratings at an all time high of 52%. With all the negativity, what is that about? No president since FDR enjoyed this high an approval rating from the voters. No the left hasn't proved it is smarter, louder, but not smarter. And it seems to be working against them. Disenchantment with Democrats is growing, not because of anything Trump is doing, but because of their own negative ranting. Nobody likes children who whine, and nobody respects adults who whine. Democrats are shooting themselves in the foot and can't see the forest for the trees.

Well, it is just one poll. Not necessarily a trend. But it portends some rethinking about strategies and tactics. There's a lot to be said about kill them with kindness. You train a dog with treats, praise and petting, not screaming and hitting. Works well with children also. Like holding the carrot in front of the donkey to get him to move where you want him to go. Donkeys aren't too bright, but they want that carrot. He may never get that promised carrot, but he wants it.
