Northam: "I'm not going anywhere". Calls slaves, "indentured servants"

I’m beginning to think we listened to completely different interviews.

In the one I watched, Northam made no mention whatsoever of anything remotely close to infanticide. He said that the doctor and parents would discuss options. As he was clearly talking about an infant with a life threatening condition, I logically assumed he meant they discuss possible treatments or possibly palliative care.

Maybe his comments would have been better received by many if he hadn’t shifted from earnest, yet compassionate, sounding politician to clinically speaking physician. I actually appreciated the directness of his comments.

Same as I appreciate using the correct terminology “terminating a pregnancy” or “aborting a fetus” over the more inflammatory, and incorrect “killing a baby”.

I wished he had clarified what "options" he was talking about. Further, I think he should have stayed in clinical mode and clarified exactly what he meant. It's not hard. You assumed something just about everyone can understand, but your assumption is just that. Why couldn't Northam have said that, given the reaction his interview got?
Instead, Northam went from doctor to bought and paid for PP shill and parroted their talking points instead of just answering the damn question, "Are you talking about killing a baby or withholding care with the intention of the baby dying, after it's been born?"

Northam isn't dumb. He knows this was the crux of the head explosions. Why not just answer. Your answer was perfect and I assume you're not a doctor?

At any rate, now Northam is pretending this isn't even an issue and is busy explaining spit shining shoes to a black woman.

I mean, seriously.

Thanks for the thoughtful discussion.

Actually that IS one of Northam's problems apparently. He is a politician now. I am not sure he does himself any good ever speaking publicly as if he were a clinician speaking to patients. He can do that if he ever goes back to private practice as a doctor. Again it just speaks to how oblivious this guy is. How he has not been forced to figure out that he can not straddle the line between clinician and politician before now is beyond me.

Right-wing nuts stand behind total racist nutjobs like Steve King and Louie Gomhert. You almost elected a racist pedofile to the US Senate in AL.

And the House Dems have 2 Jew-hating Muslims (one with a Committee seat) and a pedo (that Obama was more then happy to campaign for). Then we have the Minnesota AG (Keith Ellison) who beats women. Then we have "Pay To Play"/tax dodger Prickster, Gov of Illinois.

Nobody cares what you trump lovers think.....Move on

Right.

Making **** up is a right-wing nut's pastime.

I suspect because what I bolded above is about as hyperbolic as it gets. There is nothing that has been reported that gets anywhere near that sort of hyperbole.

Denial is such an ugly thing. I weep for you.

Indentured servitude and slavery were two different things. You would think someone in the kind of trouble he is in would be more careful in his word choice.

He was careful. Democrats have always been very fond of slavery and wouldn't want to paint it in a negative light. Republicans will continue to stand for freedom, as always.

Technically he was correct, the original Africans brought over in 1619 were indentured servants and were later freed.

Edit: Slavery didn't begin until a couple decades after.

I found the same thing...

By 1650, there were about 300 Africans living in Virginia, about 1% of an estimated 30,000 population of people of English and European ancestry. They were not slaves but worked as indentured laborers, as did the approximately 4000 white indentured servants[4] working out their loans for passage money to Virginia

It's Gale King who was wrong to correct him.

It is just this kind of "technicality" that becomes the genesis of tropes.

Had outright slavery not ensued, two decades of actively pursuing Indentured servitude as a means of securing labor would mean something. Instead, it just greased the wheels for outright slavery and does not change the fact that many of the "indentured servants that were dropped off in Virginia were stolen from slave ships by English privateers raiding slave ships under license from the English Crown and dropping them in the Colonies. Ultimately, it simply encouraged and led to the Colonials addiction to Slave Labor and thus encouraged and promulgated Slavery itself.

Another Southern Trope that covers virtually the entire Confederacy regards the Civil War: "The Civil War was fought over states rights".

Ah-huh!

I just don't think he meant anything by it and it's factually true. It's like now everything he says and does is analyzed for any evidence of racism.

Consider someone like H.W. Bush. He was AGAINST desegregation once upon a time. It seems the video I saw of him denouncing desegregation has been scrubbed from the Internet. My point is there are a lot of White people who have changed their views over the years. Most older Whites have some racially insensitive moment in their history even if they were sympathetic to the Civil Rights cause. And when you go further back, someone like Abraham Lincoln would be considered a racist but we cut him some slack considering the times he lived in. The 1980's were a different time regarding both race and sexual assault (date rape was a new concept). We need to move forward and not needlessly dwell in the past.

People change.

Does not matter what he meant. Northam was repeating a trope that has been taught to Virginia's children since forever as a means to spin Virginia's and the South's involvement in Slavery. "The first Africans brought to the colonies were accepted as Indentured Servants" is simply a neat dodge. Northam is old enough to know the actual truth of Virginia's and the South's and by extension the entire country's engagement in Slavery. For Northam to be repeating such s trope at his age is either incredibly ignorant in 2019 or massively unscrupulous. Take your pick. Neither speaks well for the Gov of Virginia. Its Northam himself that should have left something in the past that belongs in the past as he continues to repeat an ancient Southern Trope in 2019 at 55 years of age. Gimme' a break with that.

Its the people of Virginia that have to decide what to do and I have empathy for them choosing the lessor of two evils. Its their choice to make. But if Northam falls in my sights as a National Candidate for office, he will have a hard time with me.

In my case, I treat incredible ignorance and massive unscrupulousness in political figures with equal distain. I have grown to have as little patience with the one as with the other.

thats exactly how Leftists act towards any hint of ANYTHING even remotely possible to be racism from the right. we don't even have to have on blackface and stand next to KKK members for it either.

this is the new paradigm you guys have created. destroy the right... everyone you hate there and it still won't end because you will have created the monster, and it WILL eat you alive afterwards.

mark my words.

You know, all one of the the "Jew-hating Muslims" said was that there are lobbyists who support Israel. I support Israel and I even agree with that. You're making **** up, dude.

What he meant should matter. Northam grew up in the time of desegregation and while other White familes fled to all White schools his family kept him in. He was in a basketball team that was mostly Black. He has a long history of supporting integration. His father was known as someone who would not tolerate racial epithets. He's one of the good guys.

For the past 13 years, Northam has attended First Baptist Church of Capeville, a largely African American congregation about 40 miles down the Shore from Onancock. Northam approached the pastor there, the Rev. Kelvin Jones, shortly before making his first run for a state Senate seat.

“We sat down as two men, one who happened to be black and one who happened to be white,” Jones recalled.

Since then, Northam has been a steady and devoted presence, Jones said. He and his wife are among a handful of white families in the church.

Are we to believe he's a racist who attends a mostly Black church? I hope you're able to read the Washington Post story. I only just found it.

What's happening is awful. He's the opposite of a racist.
