Northam: "I'm not going anywhere". Calls slaves, "indentured servants"

Well of course Northam isn't going anywhere. The heat is now mysteriously off of him, and on two others.

Personally, I think all three of them should be run out of Virginia on a rail.

I'm sure if it was a Repub, conservatives would be demanding irrefutable proof.

But if the accuations of rape can be even remotely collaborated, regardless of what proof a trial would require, I couldn''t agree more...

Not being careful in his costumes too.

Northam might be correct about his use of the words, "indentured servitude", but what will the general public hear? The vast majority who've heard no such thing. They'll believe he just made another mistake by downplaying slavery which will lower his approval rating even more (it sank 41 points in two days already).

I don't believe it's Northam's decision to make. If the Dem politicians refuse to work or corroperate with him, which every one I've heard say, he'll be forced out.

Terrible thing to downplay, consider the horrific and brutal conditions the people had to endure, with many dying.

How well do you think it would have went if he were to correct her response rather than simply let it go? The last thing he wanted after the blackface debacle was an argument on the origins of slavery with a black woman broadcasted on national TV.

  • I can't say "how well it'd have gone" were he to have disallowed her recasting of the denotation of his diction.
  • I know there's nothing argue as goes the legal status of VA Blacks in 1619; that is a point of historical fact.
  • I know that public speakers are well advised to choose precise and factually and contextually accurate diction, and having so done, not to allow others to revise the denotation or connotation one had in mind when choosing and uttering that diction. Allowing exactly that is what Northam did, which is his prerogative to do, but his having allowed her to do that, allowing her to, in effect, put words in his mouth, makes the words she put there become his.

...I don't believe it's Northam's decision to make. If the Dem politicians refuse to work or corroperate with him, which every one I've heard say, he'll be forced out.

That may be, but that route to the end of his governorship is more fraught, for all parties involved, than is his simply resigning.

This is amazing. A Republican in identical circumstances would already be working at McDonald's.

Indeed. Democrats and the media would be braying about it 24/7 until it happened. But since these people are Democrats, skip it. Politics is far more important than principal to Democrats, apparently.

You want to see a demonstration of principal?

If you want a political party who's members adhere to principals, looks like there's only one choice: The GOP, apparently, at least in situations like this.

BTW, I'm so hoping for a the full Kavanaugh treatment of Fairfax, complete with Handmaid's Tale harpies and Alyssa Milano giving Fairfax the death ray stare.

Don't hold your breath. If it weren't for double standards, the Democrats and the political left would have no standards at all.
Come to think of it, they really don't have any standards, at least ones that they adhere to, lots of standards for everyone else.

Except he didn't downplay slavery, but that is going to be the public perception due historical ignorance and confirmation bias. He was factually correct until King interrupted him.

Well, at least run out of political office, yes.
On this point, Superfly, I would agree.

It's just the beginning of the flubs as he speechifies to black people. It's commonly known to be the 400th anniversary of slavery and servant just seems so trivializing, considering the hell black people went through on the journey.

Unfortunately, we can't run Northam out and he's burrowing in like a tick.

I have a theory that for all 3 VA Democrats, they know this is their last rodeo and they're going to get all 4 years, come hell or high water.

We are about 21 years away from the 400th anniversary of slavery. The first legal sanctioning of slavery in the English colonies was in 1640.

My "kind"?
Which "kind" is that?

Of course Northam isn't going to resign.

So Democrats have set a standard, all on their own for their own, as to what is the appropriate response to a scandal such should be.

That Northam isn't going to resign, it is pretty clear Democrats don't and won't follow even their own standards, right?
But yet, aren't they the ones that are demanding that same standard of others? The standard that they don't themselves won't follow?

My conclusion is that Democrats have no standards, at least ones they apply equally, and that they also don't have any principals.

Should Northam, Fiarfax and Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (also caught in blackface) all step down, I would reserve my right to revise my opinion of Democrats.

The level of hubris is inexplicable. Northam is refusing to leave and in an attempt to kick off his 3-year apology and redemption tour, he sat down with Gayle King-a black woman- and discussed Virginia's history of "indentured servitude".

Ralph Northam interview: Virginia governor tells Gayle King "I'm not going anywhere" in face of calls to resign - CBS News

GOV. RALPH NORTHAM: Well it has been a difficult week. And you know if you look at Virginia's history we are now at the 400 year anniversary, just 90 miles from here in 1619. The first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Old Point Comfort what we call now Fort Monroe and while--

GAYLE KING: Also known as slavery.

GAYLE KING: And why you think you still deserve this job and so many people are calling for you to step down?

GOV. RALPH NORTHAM: Well again we- we have worked very hard. We've had a good first year. And and I'm a leader. I've been in some very difficult situations. Life and death situations taking care of sick children. And right now--

GAYLE KING: Because you're a doctor, yes?

GOV. RALPH NORTHAM: --right now, Virginia needs someone that can heal. There's no better person to do that than a doctor. Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass. And that's why I'm not going anywhere. I have learned from this. I have a lot more to learn. But we're in a unique opportunity now. Again the 400 year anniversary of the history whether it be good or bad in Virginia to really make some impactful changes--

The only thing saving him is Dem hypocrisy.

If you read his comments, you would realize he didn't refer to slavery as indentured servitude. It was Gayle King that conflated the two.

No he didn't. But what is he trying to prove? Is he trying to let Virginia or the South or the country at large off the hook as a means of letting himself off the hook?

The first indentured servants were the beginnings of what became 250 years of institutional slavery which is a stain that is yet with us today. We enslaved blacks, lynched Mexicans and committed outright genocide on Native Americans, resisted Reconstruction at least in the South for another 100 years after that and on and on and on. So frankly, I consider Northam's comments today as boneheaded as his comments a few days ago. Mincing words over the beginnings of slavery is flat stupid especially in his current predicament.

I am actually fine with the way the State AG has positioned himself with regard to his own issues. He has made a nice start on the way back assuming he has a way back. Northam just keeps making it worse for himself. It looks like the people of his state or at least some of them are willing to cut him some slack. But if he keeps cutting his own knees out from under himself he will have nobody to blame but himself for consequences.

Not a Trump 'lover'. Try again.

Still nothing to say about Democrats apparent inability to adhere to their own standards?
Yet demanding the same from everyone else?

Still nothing to say about Democrats apparent lack of principals?

Get used to the white guy speechifying to black Americans about slavery. It's going to be his mission to prove how enlightened he is.

OMG! Talk about putting lipstick on a pig! The man actually referred to slavery as "indentured servitude." WTH was he thinking?

Actually it's a pretty standard response from Christians when they try to defend biblical endorsement of slavery and beating them to death (So long as they don't die in the first day or two after the beating).

Exodus 21:20-21 KJV
20 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. 21 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

Yeah I would have believed that if you didn't constantly play victim for him and whine about how "unfair" the media is to him, even going so far as to say the media should have their "wings clipped".

About as dangerous a sentiment as a citizen could possibly have on behalf of a manchild of a politician.

Red:
For now, I'll have to take your world for that because I'm not going to verify the nature and extent of that claim's accuracy; however, even as I take your word for it, for now, it's not an assertion I'll repeat.

I've maintained from the beginning of the Trump administration that there were times when he was being a 'good Trump', advancing the agenda, and times that he was 'bad Trump', when he was retarding the advancing of the agenda, such as when he gets into stupid Twitter slap fights that mean and do nothing constructive. This is a matter of record in my posting in this forum.

The Washington Post's new motto is that "Democracy dies in darkness", to which I'd add that it also dies in the politically biased, leftist narrative pushing reportage which is little more than leftist political propaganda, that's laughingly called 'news' these days.

Or have you already forgotten the BuzzFeed reporting that the Mueller team had to contradict in public?
Have you already forgotten the reportage of the Covington Catholic high school students?

So what you see as complaining about 'how "unfair" the media is to Trump' has far more depth and legitimate concerns than just any single president.
