...Ocasio-Cortez’s most determined adversaries are not partisan Republicans, but Democrats who say that she has been a disruptive influence. The Hill recently reported that at least one member of Congress has been urging New York party leaders to recruit a Democratic primary challenger to Ocasio-Cortez. But the news led to a surge of donations to Ocasio-Cortez, suggesting that a more efficient means of ousting her might be simply to eliminate her district.

New York Democrats Could Eliminate Ocasio-Cortez's District in 2020

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I’m for keeping Sandy Stupid, the model Democrat.

wow...corrupt to the core. She's a duly elected representive, and they want to target her for being "disruptive"? What's democratic about that?

This would be a stupid thing to do. It would reflect very badly on Democrats and it probably wouldn't even work. Cortez accurately notes that her popularity and name recognition would probably just result in her getting elected again.

How would they remove her district? The amount of districts that is apportioned via the U.S. constitution is 438. The only way they could do so is if New York has less representation via a lower population (which is actually occurring).

As I understand it, by redrawing it in such a way that she would no longer reflect her resulting constituency. But that's unlike to work in this case for a myriad of reasons.

Keep wishing. Alexandra's a star in her district, more than she is generally. Not everyone isn't jealous.

In 2014, New York approved a constitutional amendment establishing a nonpartisan redistricting commission, which is set to take over the redistricting process starting in 2020. The 10-member commission, meant to be independent from the legislature, is made up of individuals selected by leaders from the state Senate and Assembly, and the original eight members pick two additional members.

So the redistricting is being done by an independent commission that won't have majority Dem membership and no New York Dem is quoted or even hinted as having publicly contemplated the idea in this article. But sure, why not stir the pot with a hypothetical "New York Dems could eliminate AOC's district"?

The Intercept is such trash.

This just won't happen. Even the dems who don't like her wouldn't go that far because she's making noise. Much easier to vilify her or primary her or whatever. I think more dems like her than dislike her, even if they don't agree with her. Repubs wouldn't support it because they either don't care about her or want her front and center for the dem party if possible.

Just silly talk. She's not going anywhere any time soon.

She could just move into one of the new districts. What do they think they can do? Gerrymander all of The Bronx?

Stupid on their part, if true (which I doubt-see below). If the people in that part of Queens, and within any redrawn district may replace it, like AOC, they'll re-elect her regardless of where the district lines are drawn.

Democrats have been the loudly complaining victims of Republican gerrymandering for too long to even suggest that. If 2020 census data indicates the need for an additional district in that part of NYC due to a significant increase in population, I'm thinking she would still win there.

I don't think she would have to even move. The resulting shape of the district she lives in would have to be redrawn so that it was included in a district in north west New York state.
