Why didn't Trump pursue his wall initiative when the GOP controlled both chambers of Congress?

The GOP held both chambers for two years, yet Trump didn't use his "bully pulpit" to press them to pass his wall funding during that time. The wall and getting Mexico to pay for it was the foremost thing for which candidate Trump was known; it was his premier talking point. Despite that, he put off bringing it to fruition until now; moreover, he's not even attempting to get Mexico to pay for it.


Why hasn't Trump pursued his infrastructure initiative?

It's the one thing about which he stands a fair shot of obtaining Democrats' approbation. Yet rather than collaboratively pursing ends that both he and Dems want, he's being contentious and continuing to press "wedge" policies rather than win-win ones.
 
i think it's easier to do the Sean Hannity/Rush Limbaugh thing. just wait for democrats to get some power then cry like babies.

He decided that it was more important that he first get the military more money and also that he proved that he was willing to work with the establishment.

Then they ****ed him.
 
Trump didn't even ask for $5.7B in wall funding in his FY19 budget request.

Huh? Was the military going broke? Can't the republicans do more than one thing at a time? Getting more money for the military doesn't help secure the border and since it's now such a crisis why wasn't it three months ago?

Republicans have no good answer for this because it's a political ploy foisted on trump by coulter and limbaugh.

Wow a president pursuing wedge politics. That is truly insightful! Something that is precedent setting. Wonder why previous politicians of all stripes have not thought of using it.

Both the Great Wall Of Trump and any significant infrastructure repair/upgrade would require some serious funding - in other words, much more deficit spending and/or *gasp* a federal tax increase. Trump likely believed that he could create such wondrous, truely fantastic, estraordinary and best ever in the history of mankind GDP growth (using tax cuts, trade deals and tarriffs?) that federal revenues would rise enough to erase the federal deficit (after two years of MAGA leadership?).

With republicants in congress fearing that they were going to be caught deficit spending at levels they constantly accuse (only?) demorats of doing it was not a good time to give Trump his wish list of added federal spending. Trump eventually realized (or at least was forced to accept) that he could not get full funding for the (entire promised?) Great Wall Of Trump and reduced his $25B (complete border wall?) dream to a $5B (for up to 220 miles of additonal border fencing) down payment. MAGA indeed.

I have no doubt in my mind that Trump and Turtle Face sat down one day in October, mulled over the prospect of life with a likely Democratic House and came up with this idea.

What makes me think it went that way? The TIMING, just as the Democrats take their seats in the majority, that's what.
This whole shutdown is an opening salvo and the intent is to weaken support for the Democrats.

The voters spoke, and Trump and McConnell hatched this gambit as a piece of recurring "jury nullification" against the "verdict" that ruled Republicans the losers. Simply put, two people who live for revenge came up with the ultimate revenge plot.

Of course the military is going broke. I keep waiting for the debt hawks to start talking about the "unfunded liabilities" for all those military pensions. They only seem to be worried about pensions for government workers, though, and Social Security.

Trump is the best man to stand up to contentious democrats and tell them he will not put up with their stubborn opposition to border security.

And BREAKING a major campaign promise! They tout that tax cut like it was some YUGE accomplishment (which of course we know was just a corporate and 1% giveaway to **** our future cuz, why not, we need more money now, **** the future). Fact is, it was anothe BROKEN PROMISE!

He said , his folks would pay more, rich folks, what hapepned to that?

He also said they'd close loophole, another lie.

Every supposed promis he's "kept" has been mostly a complete fail, that they represent as if it was a sucess.

Trump is a little boy, and incompetent little boy, and the alt-right hby necessity must fantasize that he's a strong leader.:roll:

No, there is nothing Trump could do that would cause his supporters to abandon him. You thought is was hyperbole when he declared he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose any votes. Trump knows his supporters. He knows he can literally do anything and his supporters will continue to defend him. He has repeatedly lied right to their faces and they continue to adore him. It's almost like the battered woman syndrome.

my guess is that if he completely reversed course on his anti-immigrant xenophobia, he would lose a great deal of support.

No he wouldn't. He would simply claim his position has always been the same, and the base will accept that. Just like "I never said Mexico would pay for the wall." His supporters are now everywhere parroting that line.

He'll soon enough come out with "I never said I had no dealings with Russia." And the supporters will accept and parrot that.

"I never said I was looking forward to sitting down with Mueller."

I never discussed paying back the National Enquirer with Cohen."

"I never said 'grab 'em by the *****'"

"I never said I believe Putin."

"I never said I would release my tax returns. I never said they were under audit."

"I never [fill in the blank]" Trump supporters believe everything Trump says or tweets. Fact.
