Why is illegal border crossing at an 'all time low'?

Why do you think the number of illegal crossings are at an all time low? What has changed that has deterred this? What exactly is it, that appears to be working?

Thoughts?

How do we know how many illegals made it into the country without being apprehended at the border?

None as long as illegal voters vote D.

If immigrant groups voted R then the Dems would’ve built a wall visible from space and played this “if it saves one life” line they use in relation to the second amendment

Wow, just wow.

Why would adding a physical barrier to an area known to be a preferred crossing for illegal immigrants be "overkill"?

Because in DHS testing, all of the 8 prototype walls (concrete/steel) were compromised.

Is it at an all time low? Or is it being counted and reported different for propaganda purposes? Like when Obama was claiming all time highs in deportations, by counting the catch and releases as deportation.

Of course they "can be compromised" - we live in the age of power tools. If you have decided that only physical security systems which "can't be compromised" are worthy of taxpayer funding then we should stop putting locks on public school doors, stop fencing playgrounds, schoolyards and swimming pools and save loads of taxpayer money.

wouldn't Trump be inflating the numbers to make his point then? You know like 4000 terrorists caught at the border....

Can't believe nobody has mentioned this one yet. I take that back. I can believe it.

One major reason is that Mexico has clawed back enough of an economy over the years to keep them home. We now have negative unauthorized immigration flow from Mexico, meaning more go back than come in.

Gee you think there is a message there for the US with virtually its entire ex-border problem originating in three tiny countries in Central America that we have frigged around with and helped screw up for a century? Those folks start their trek from about 1,200 to 1,500 miles away...some of them more! Do you think we might be able to figure out a way to keep them at home too!!!!

Unfortunately American history of meddling in Latin American countries is as bad if not worse then our history in the ME.

How many Americans killed by illegal aliens in the US is too many, in your estimation?

How many Americans killed by left-handed people is too many in your estimation? We need to do something about left-handed people. Every day we don't do something people are being killed by left-handed people.

You obviously don't intend on taking the deaths seriously.

They were once sons, daughters, husbands and wives. Now the only way their loved ones can see them is in pictures. All because some political asswipe refused to enforce the laws of this country.

How many Americans killed by guns in the US is too many for you?

Not a single gun has killed any United States citizens. Or, any other person, in the history of firearms.

No, it would the Swamp corrupting the numbers. With the truth on our side, The President and the rest of us don't have a mindset for this type of propaganda.

The Swamp? Trump is a swamp creature of the highest magnitude. The truth and Trump do not cross paths.

My impression is that an improving economy in Mexico is one reason for the decline in illegal migration from there, much as worsening conditions in Central America increased migration from there. Based on my experience working in the field, “sending” country conditions influence migration more than “receiving” country policies do.

Why do you think that the number of illegal crossings are at an all time low?

The Department of Homeland Security said that, in total, 521,090 individuals were either apprehended or deemed ”inadmissible” after arriving at a port of entry on the border during the 2018 fiscal year. In 2017, 415,517 people were caught crossing illegally or turned away, as were 553,378 in 2016.
What has changed from original historic rates apprehension zero to, at the moment, 521,000 in 2018?

In 1960 it was nearly zero. It was still negligible up to 1969. Then till about 1975 it climbed to about a half million a year. Then it was higher (varying between 600,000 and 1.7 million a year) till 2009. And in 2010, and all years since (but one) were LOWER than 2018.

So obviously 521,000 apprehended (for every illegal caught one is not) is much lower than in many years, but it is not anywhere near an all time low.

The question you ought to be asking is what has changed since the 1960s that triggered this flood of illegals, such that half million a year are still crossing the SW border illegally (and another 600,000 enter by visa to become illegals)?

The same is true of all the deaths caused by left-handed people.

If every barrel has a few bad apples it's irrational to throw away a barrel because it has a few bad apples. Do you understand?

Let me try to make it a little clearer. Imagine you have green, red and blue barrels of apples. Now imagine that every barrel has a few bad apples.

Donald says to you that we should get rid of the red barrels. You ask him why. He claims it's because the red barrels each have a few bad apples.

Do you see the problem with Donald's argument?

It doesn't make sense because barrels of every color have bad apples. It's not a good argument for getting rid of red barrels. Just as Trump's argument against illegal immigrants makes no sense because all groups of people have violent criminals.

Are these people criminals?

That’s only half the equation. People from Central America can migrate to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, etc all countries where they speak the same language and have similar cultural history (ok except Brazil) and better economies and living conditions then their home countries, and they don’t need to illegal immigrate there, they can fly straight in to Lima or Santiago and clear customs and enter. Why Don’t they?

Because no other Latino countries will hand out generous social welfare benefits.

I would be a fan of open borders if we had no welfare state.

They do head for places other than the US. When I visited with a Mexican group that sheltered Central Americans, I learned that many headed for Monterrey in Mexico to disappear and look for jobs. Others went to other Central American countries, still others moved within their own countries. And the notion of flying to Lima or Santiago is ridiculous, as that requires money and perhaps visas. The people I observed were frightened, penniless teenagers who were asked to join drug gangs and threatened with death if they refused.

You reminded me of a beautiful song by Roger Whittaker and later covered by Reba:

Just Across the Rio Grande

The lights of Laredo dance on the water
And shine in a young man's eyes
He stands on the border and dreams of Paradise
He's heard crazy stories of how people live
Over in the Promised Land
He heard they eat three meals a day
Just across the Rio Grande

He's got a wife named Maria and a baby named Rose
And one more to feed on the way
Two willing hands that couldn't find work today
He stares at the river and curses the future that he can't understand
He knows his child would have a chance
Just across the Rio Grande

It's only a river that's not that deep or wide
A boy can throw a stone across and reach the other side
It's just some muddy water cuttin' through the land
But a man can make a dream come true
Just across the Rio Grande

The lights of Laredo dance on the water
And shine in a young man's eyes
He stands on the border and stares up at the skies
The same old stars shine so bright over the Promised Land

Sometimes it seems like God must live
Just across the Rio Grande

It's only a river that's not that deep or wide
A boy can throw a stone across and reach the other side
It's just some muddy water cuttin' through the land
But a man can make his dream come true
Just across the Rio Grande

Sometimes it seems like God must live

Four pages before someone mentions the obvious, more opportunity in Mexico, why be here?

What is exactly, "low?' How many illegals are we still talking about?
We're still talking MILLIONS!

There were 12 million immigrants living in the country illegally as of January 2015, according to the most recent estimate from the Department of Homeland Security. The estimates from two independent groups are similar: The Pew Research Center estimates the number at 10.7 million in 2016, and the Center for Migration Studies says there were 10.8 million people in 2016 living in the U.S. illegally.

DHS estimated that the growth of the illegal immigrant population had slowed considerably, saying the population increased by 470,000 per year from 2000 to 2007, but only by 70,000 per year from 2010 to 2015.

CMS found a decline in the undocumented population, and specifically those from Mexico, of about 1 million since 2010.

There should hardly be any illegal entries (that's the wistful ideal).
But to have millions - never mind, thousands - boy, you can lower that number many more times,
and you're still inundated by illegals!

How much does it cost the USA to process and sustain one illegal entry while waiting for the verdict whether he's granted entry or deported? Multiply that by the millions.

In Canada, our illegal aliens are nowhere near the amount you've got, and yet....

Illegal border processing costs alone to exceed $1 billion, PBO report

For those who exercise every step in the appeals process, are finally rejected and then deported, the cost is much steeper than the average, rising to $33,738 for a single failed claim.

The PBO report doesn’t tell the full story though. The numbers don’t include what the provinces and municipalities pay for social services for illegal border crossers.

Whatever it is that's made the migration slow down.....is still not enough. It's nothing.

Why did Clinton support building a barrier if the numbers are declining? Why did she think the border has to be controlled, if this declining numbers are good?

“I voted numerous times when I was a senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders.” - Clinton, 2015
