The problem that the GOP is having is limiting itself in who can be part of and take part of the control of its party. The Dems have always seemed to allow greater leeway in who is part of their party. Now a newly elected Dem may end that and do more damage to the Dems than either Trump or the GOP can do. It seems this newly elected Dem, Ocasio-Cortez wants to eliminate all of those in the party that don't agree with the views of her group, the very far left. In essence, she is asking "her" followers to cut out y a large portion of her own party and us independents who make the difference in an election. She is doing exactly what the GOP did when the Tea Party became so strong in the GOP, use that power in the primaries to cut out any that are not true believers. In the end she will do more damage to the Dems in the end than Trump or the GOP. I bet the GOP is cheering her on!!!!
You, my friend, are exactly right. But that is where the two parties are headed today, one to the extreme fringes of the left, the other to the extreme fringes of the right. Take a look at the graph Pew Research provides as to the strength of the Democratic Party over the years or FDR to 2014.
Trends in Party Identification, 1939-2014 | Pew Research Center
I'm old enough to remember the big tent Democratic Party, the one that had its conservative wing, it liberal wing and most folks in the middle. Where the big tent Democratic Party represented the workers, middle America, the people while the GOP was the party that represented business.
Then that big tent party became more ideological, they discarded their conservative wing in favor of a leftist agenda. That spawned the Reagan revolution. There was a reason the Democrats controlled the House for 58 out of 62 years 1933-1994. That included 40 straight years 1955-1994. The party was all encompassing. Then the Democrats began to get rid of their moderates, developed more or a less a litmus test. 2010 marked the year when the Democrats shed most of its moderates. Got rid of the blue dog Democrats, the old yeller dog democrats were long gone.
Today, as of 10 Oct 2018 Gallup puts the two major party strength at 30% Democrat, 28% Republican and 39% independent. That's a far cry from the big tent era of FDR until Reagan of the democrats averaging 45% of the electorate, the 35% from Reagan until Obama and now down to 30%. The GOP for the most part since Eisenhower has been in the 20's, sometimes the high 20's, sometimes the low 20's. Perhaps it is the gap between the two major parties that should catch your eye. From years of a 30 point plus gap for the Democrats, down to two points today or should I say as of 10 Oct 2018.
Party affiliation is dynamic, I assumed that gap has climbed in the Democrats favor as the midterms show. The climb, I think the Democrats can thank Trump for that. One last thing, look at independents, the yellow line. It isn't those who once identified themselves as Democrats switch parties, they became independents. Perhaps like me, looking for party somewhere in the middle of these two ultra fringe major parties we have. Maybe even you although you may not realize it.
