It Was A Big, Blue Wave: Democrats Pick Up Most House Seats In A Generation

What's concerning is that at least a dozen of those Dem winners came about AFTER election day.

We know there are shenanigans going on in Florida. I wonder what shenanigans haven't been caught in other states?

There was shennanigans in Florida - back in 2000. Remember how the republicans shut down the recount to give dubya the victory? And sadly Gore was way too nice and let them do it. And now it is 2018, and the republicans are still trying to shut down the recounts in Florida to give the republicans the victory. Why are republicans so afraid of having EVERY vote recounted. If every vote is recounted and the republicans win - the democrats will concede and congratulate them. If the democrats win , you know the republicans will have a tantrum and then challenge the results in the supreme court. And with 5 conservative monkeys , they will hand victory to the republican organ grinder.

Here's a little perspective for you: Republicans gained 63 seats in the midterm in 2010. Obama still dominated in 2012.

Liberals don’t vote in midterms. That’s a known reality. If you see a blue wave in midterms it will be a tsunami in a presidential election year.

Trump will be a one term president like Bush 1 and Jimmy Carter. He’ll be remembered as a failure.

Do you know why shenanigans don't matter? Look at how Democrats have a lock on basically every election in California. This is what Florida will be in a few years, and what the rest of the country will be in a few decades.

"Our democracy" has become nothing more than a racial headcount.
And voter suppression and gerrymandering will, at best, slow it down. But the GOP will do their best to delay the inevitable.

Gore had nothing to do with it back in 2000. The Supremes decided.

But you would think improvements would be made 18 years later, eh? Seems not and the Dems took advantage this election.

It's what Trump did in 2016, and it worked. Yes, eventually it will fail, which is why his inaction on immigration is stupid and self defeating.

What do you think will happen if white male protestants no longer have cultural hegemony? We will have to worship African tribal gods? Or the women will make us all wear tampons?:lamo

What are you so afraid of? Culture is changing. Always has. Always will. There is a new global culture that’s starting to evolve. It’s an exciting time. There are many opportunities and new things happening. But those who keep fearfully clinging to some idealized past will be left behind. That includes Muslims who dream of a re-ascendant caliphate or whites interested in a repetition of colonial era racial domination and hegemony.

I've lived in California my whole life and watched it become what was a diverse but nice place to live into a crime ridden, blighted, and openly anti white dump. This multiculturalism that you so adore is openly hostile to me and my interests.

In other words, I don't want to live with people who hate me.

Equal rights isn't pie. If other people have rights you don't suddenly get fewer.

Woot! Glad to see the district I canvassed for turned blue.

Let's force you to live among poor, rural whites. I'm sure you'd appreciate being told how you're just getting a new perspective, diversity of ideas, and how you have just as many rights as before.

I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of poor rural whites.

Votes are still being counted in several House races. But the AP has now called another race in New Jersey, projecting Democrat Andy Kim the winner in the suburban Philadelphia 3rd Congressional District over incumbent Republican Tom MacArthur.

That means, more than a week after Election Day, Democrats have increased their House gains to a net of 34 seats — and, when all the vote is counted, they may get to 39.

Make no mistake: That is a very big wave.
==============================================
I have to believe that this result was a reaction to 2 years of Trump. His odds of getting reelected are looking pretty slim. Sixteen per cent of Republicans say they will not vote for him.

Where does this years wave election fit into history since WWII?
1948 Blue wave, Democrats pick up 75 seats
2010 red wave, Republicans pick up 63 seats
1946 red wave, Republicans pick up 56 seats
1994 red wave, Republicans pick up 54 seats
2018 blue wave, Democrats pick up 36 seats with 6 still to be decided
2006 blue wave, Democrats pick up 33 seats

the above are the only wave elections since WWII.

It wasn't just the House. When you throw in governorships, AG's and state seats Democrats gained something like 300 seats and broke a multitude of Republican supermajorities.

Wave election applies to the house. The classic definition of a wave election is one in which the party out of power picks up 30 plus seats and gains control of the house. A wave elections doesn't apply to the senate since only a third of the senate is up at any one time. Governorship's not all of them are up either, but all 435 house seats are.

I do consider the fact with 26 seats up for reelection in the senate vs. 9 for the Republicans, a net loss of one is a huge victory or win in opinion for the Democrats. I haven't paid hardly any attention to governors or state legislatures since they weren't part of my forecasts. I do know if I were a Democrat, I'd be happier than a pig in **** with the results.

LOL! And yet, no matter how desperately upset that makes you, CA is nothing like you're describing. It's not crime ridden, blighted and/or anti white. I suggest if the fear that dominates your daily life compels you to believe that that you consider, oh, North Dakota as a possible place to live.

And for you, of all people, who pathologically hates minorities, to complain about hate?

I think I've reached my irony fill this morning and it's only 0900 hours.

I wasn't aware there was a formal definition of "wave election" that only applied to the House. Not saying you're wrong, just that this is the first I've heard of it.

Yup. The place that gave us rimming-obsessed Bob Danameyer, B1 Bob Dornan and Rohrbacher has case off their legacy like farts in the wine and CA is a better place for it.

I never had an opinion of Young Kim, but once she started going Full Trump and accusing Democrats of trying to steal the election I was thrilled to see her ass booted out. Screw all these Trump clones.

Yup. Support of Trump, in my book, is an automatic disqualifier, period.

What part of California do you live in? Must be a not-so-hot area. I have visited the state many times, and I am jealous of how beautiful it is. From Coronado island to Venice Beach, taking Hwy 1 up to to Napa, it’s breathtakingly beautiful all over. You must not get out much.

I don't think there is a hard set definition. But there is the classical one used by political pundits and prognosticators. That was the one I referred to. I've been doing my forecasts for decades and I abide by the classical one. There are some which looks at a wave election when one party makes major gains, period. No numbers. There are debates on whether 1966 was a wave election, LBJ lost 47 seats in the house, but didn't lose control. His majority fell from 295 down to 248. A gain of 47 seats certainly would seem like a wave election, but the GOP was still 61 seats in the minority. They would need an additional 32 seats to have taken control.

I suppose one could chalk all of this up to semantics. Especially when one looks at 1954 where the Democrats gained 18 seats, but that was enough for them to flip the house back to their control. A control they maintained for 40 years until 1994. Actually the Democrats controlled the house for 58 out of 62 years, 1933-1994. That's quite a stretch. But that was in the era of the big tent Democratic Party which had both its conservative and liberal wings without that much on political philosophy. The party of the people, the workers while the Republicans were the party of business. Much simpler times were those.

kind of a piss poor diversion. Looking forward to Speaker Pelosi ? Ah oversight finally !!
