Troops deployed to U.S.-Mexico border lack hot food, electricity

Well, neither is essential to interdicting and apprehending illegal border crossers: electricity is better than no electricity; most folks prefer hot food to non-hot food. Moreover, it's a military deployment, not a school field trip. So, they may have to do just make do....They're trained to do so....

Hot food and electricity notwithstanding, they have guns and handcuffs, don't they? ;)

They have guns, probably not live rounds, and I doubt they have handcuffs.

Even if they did they have no legal authority to use either...

Well it would be far better to use those troops to fight fires than sitting and and twiddling there parts waiting for fifteen hundred women and children seeking asylum...

Only after they have been trained to fight fires. Putting untrained people on the fireline puts all firefighters at risk.
Actually, the military is called into service depending on the situation.

Interesting you did not mention the adult males also walking with the "women and children". You trying to play the sympathy card?

They won't be allowed to use any weapons...Or even detain or arrest in migrants....They have NO authority to do so...Worse yet for your "kind" they are building field hospitals to assist any migrant handed over to them if they need medical attention...That has to make your "kind" angry

Red:
Please identify whom specifically you think be my "kind."

The migrants are coming! The migrants are coming! This is Paul Revere stuff. Protect us from the masses who might seek asylum here. It’s the American way!

We used to be stronger. Trump makes us look like ******s.

So, no hot food, no electricity, no live rounds, probably no handcuffs (or an equivalent)....What did Trump send them there for? Desert/scrub survival training?

This a political stunt pure and simple...A waste of time and money....Still it plays well with trump's base, I expect it will be over in a few weeks.....

Seriously?.....You know who you are and so does trump...That is why he fearmongers this situation.....
Blue:
You are correct in asserting that I know who I am. I know too that you presumptuously asserted what is worse for my "kind" and what makes my "kind" angry, yet you don't know me. So, again I ask you again: whom specifically have you determined be my "kind?"

On Tuesday last week -- November 6th -- SecDef Jim Mattis cancelled the name "Operation Faithful Patriot" at the southern border. Mattis signed the order in silence, handed it out and went on about his daily work.

Word around the Pentagon is that an 'operation' is a combat thing involving active engagements against an armed enemy of the United States. The deployment of active duty troops under US Northern Command is not a combat thing. It is support of DHS civilian authority and the civilian authorities at the local, county and state levels in Texas, Arizona, California.

JOINT CHIEFS CHAIR SAYS SOLDIERS WILL NOT BE INVOLVED IN DENYING BORDER ENTRY TO MIGRANTS

th

General Joseph Dunford, USMC. Asked about criticism of the decision to deploy by his predecessor and other retired senior officers, Dunford said "To be honest with you, I wish they wouldn't do that, but they certainly can do that if they want to."

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford said Monday that the US military will not be "involved in the actual mission of denying people entry to the United States." When asked about the border mission for active-duty troops, Dunford said the military will not be coming into contact with migrants traveling toward the border.

"There is no plan for US military forces to be involved in the actual mission of denying people entry to the United States," Dunford said, speaking at an event at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. "There is no plan for soldiers to come in contact with immigrants or to reinforce Department of Homeland Security as they're conducting their mission." "We are providing enabling capabilities," Dunford said, explaining they were tasked with supporting the DHS.

Dunford said the DHS requested logistical support, "so you'll see some soldiers down there right now that are putting up concertina wire and reinforcing the points of entry," and that the military is providing "both trucks and helicopter support and then also some medical support."

Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said Monday, "There are currently more than 4,800 personnel deployed in support of this mission. This continues to be a dynamic situation with more units and personnel deploying to the operating area, and we expect to reach 5,200 deployed personnel as early as today." "DoD anticipates more than 7,000 active-duty troops will be supporting DHS soon," Manning said. The breakdown of personnel includes "1,100 in California, 1,100 in (Arizona) and 2,600 in Texas," according to Manning.

Trump's decision to deploy active-duty US troops and the earlier deployment of National Guard forces to the southern border could cost between $200 million and $300 million, according to an independent analysis and Department of Defense figures on guard deployments.

Retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, who served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2011 to 2015, tweeted Friday that "our men and women in uniform are better trained, better equipped, and better led so they meet any threat with confidence. A wasteful deployment of over-stretched soldiers and Marines would be made much worse if they use force disproportional to the threat they face. They won't."

Dunford is busy obeying the orders of Potus and following the orders of SecDef which don't always match up. Dunford served under Mattis in Iraq.

Those rations are called MRE. Meals ready to eat.

The boo hooing is not by the troops. It's by those who do not wish the caravan to impeded in any way.

Meals Rejected by Everyone is the way I always heard it.

MRE came along after my time-in which was during conscription when everyone got hardtack and grits. Hardtack smothered in grits in fact. Dunno which was tougher on the troops, that or sh!t on a shingle. On FTX we managed without phones while electricity was kind of a bonus.

For several years now Pentagon says their main security concern during border deployments are the private unregulated militia that steal national guard equipment. The ol' midnight requisition action that goes back a long way in the military. Except the hairy faced and pot bellied dueling banjos private militia aren't military if they ever were to begin with.

Jus sayin.

Notice that since the election is over Trump’s fear-mongering rhetoric about terrorist caravans has dropped dramatically despite the millions of dollars of taxpayer dollars and the misuse of our troops to back up his reality TV theatrics.

A slight disagreement; while President *****-grabber can now be called President *****-in-the-rain, he’s only making himself look bad, not Americans.

Thanks for the info. It’s good to see our military leadership standing up for our troops against another draft-dodging administration that never does.

Right now, the theatrics are in Florida with a corrupt election supervisor trying to swing the election in the Dems' favor.

There is so much mud being slung down there I wouldn’t take anyone’s word for the truth without it being double-checked by neutral witnesses.

OMG, deployed troops without air conditioning! I'm confident that most historians would agree that but for their legions having air conditioning Rome wouldn't never have become the great empire it did. Air conditioned tents, trucks and ships is how we beat Germany and Japan.

Are there vegan MREs? Just wondering.

Well MRE's do in fact come with those flameless ration heaters, so they technically do have hot food.

Hot would be relative of course...

Chipped beef is served in many diners and restaurants in the United States as a breakfast item. It is popular among the veteran community who generally refer to it as "**** On a Shingle"; chipped beef in milk gravy (or "S.O.S.") is a common traditional meal which is served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces due to its reasonably nutritional profile, ease and speed of preparing.

Fresh food ingredients and cooking facilities at the front were impossible so dense, firm bread products were many, cheap, easy to store, transport, distribute. Which during a time before manufactured preservatives left only a mite of a hungry visitor problem inside 'em however...

A brigade officer of the day called out sharply to some of our men as he passed along the line: “Throw that hard tack out of the trenches. Don’t you know, men, you’ve been told not to throw your rations in the trenches” Prompt to obey, the men threw out the hard tack, saying as they did, “We’ve thrown it out several times, sir, but it will crawl back.”

I love SOS and still make it, albeit with variations. Always with an egg overeasy on top but the meat varies from ground beef to ground pork or turkey, chopped ham (preferable real ham not the sandwich sliced ham) or sliced corned beef. That and a package of powered country gravy is all I need.

When I was in MRE’s were just starting to come out towards the end of my time in the Marine Corps. The grunts got the MRE’s, mostly due to weight and the air wingers were stuck with C-rations; canned meals which were heavier, but fully constituted. B-rations were hot meals but mostly powdered such as powerdered eggs, mashed potatoes, etc. A-rations were “real” food and only in established mess halls.

I was in the Army from age 20-23. Whenever I returned from leave, I would get a large ladle full of SOS and get 1/2 dozen eggs on top. Wasn’t worth much the rest of that first day, but I was agreeable! The milk machines were awesome as well!

Point taken.

Gimme a can of C-ration peaches in a scrumptious syrup under a big ol' shade tree and I'm a happy camper. The Dole line of canned fruits had nuthin on the fully constituted C-ration line of canned fruits. Only thingy better was the mess hall pie back at the post. Between the two precious treats I got through four Army years in a fine order ('66 - 70). The re-up officer said he could promise sixteen more years of each of 'em in spades but I said thx and no thx. They didn't take to my idea of parting gifts either. Strange to say perhaps but the weight of the C-rations didn't matter much back then given we had the steel pots pressing down on our necks every step we stumbled.

I myself favor the Marine lore that hardtack was created by the the Corps cause they pushed forward so fast and hard the bread wuz stale crust by the time it got to 'em. You were in the Crotch so maybe you heard that even way later on from its shady origin.

Thx much for the personal photo of you from your own Army album. I broke my promise to you not to publish it but so what. :peace All in a good humor of course as no such thingy has happened or could happen.

I hope you gents don't consider me a party pooper or a stick in the mud but I never got into any Army meal of any kind to include SOS. I thought the only meal Army didn't muck up much was spaghetti bolognese. More power to you guys enjoying your SOS which is enjoyable to read. If Army wuz anything to me culinary it was C-ration canned peaches I'd leave in a running stream overnight and its outstanding standard issue pies -- peach pie topping the list of 'em of course. Later I relocated to Georgia for five years to snarf up all the peach cobbler they could make. So each snarfer upper to his own as they say.

$75 million for troops at the border and counting.

“This is an early estimated cost,” Mattis said. “I’m confident that number will change.”

High confidence indeed.
