Republicans put in bind over preexisting conditions

Republican House members laughing in June 2017 at removing healthcare insurance from 24 million Americans.

11/3/18
New actions from the Trump administration are complicating efforts of vulnerable Republicans to show their support for pre-existing condition protections heading into Tuesday's midterm elections. The Trump administration moved last week to allow states to waive certain ObamaCare requirements and pursue conservative health policies that were previously not allowed under the Obama administration. The new rules would allow states to promote health plans that don’t require the same level of coverage as the federal health law, including charging people with pre-existing conditions more money.

Remember back in May -- July of 2017? Trump and the GOP were holding parties celebrating their new healthcare legislation.

Healthcare legislation that made healthcare insurance for pre-existing conditions unaffordable, and legislation that also effectively stripped healthcare insurance from 24 million Americans.

And now these clowns want your vote hoping you'll forget all about that healthcare knife they rammed deep into your back. Only the thumbs-down vote of the late John McCain thwarted their designs to ruin healthcare in America.

I don't think pre-existing conditions should be covered by insurance. That's what drives up costs for those of us without such conditions.

The solution I would suggest is going to a system combining Medicare and Medicaid, and making this available to those citizens with serious conditions regardless of age, while increasing the FICA to cover costs.

This also allows for the Feds to regulate the costs of such care.

The rest of us can enjoy our normal insurance plans, with costs commensurate to normal risks.

It's been one long, never-ending attack on people with pre-existing conditions ever since the GOP gained power.

I don't mean in 2017, I mean back in 2011. Lest we forget, the very first legislative vote the new GOP House took in 2011 was to repeal protections for pre-existing conditions.

The year-long effort to do so last year was just the culmination of years of repeal attempts and more subtle sabotage of the marketplaces on the part of the GOP. And now of course Trump has decided to just use executive actions to gut pre-existing condition protections as much as he can.

Covering preexisting conditions run contrary to the theory of insurance. If you believe the country is obligated to support those with preexisting conditions that should be addressed as welfare and removed from the insurance discussion.

There's also the matter of why a preexisting condition. Being born with an uninsurable condition is one thing. Electing to use insurance payment money to buy a boat then injuring yourself with boat is another.

When preexisting conditions weren't covered, insurance companies paid employees to pore through patient histories to find some flimsy excuse to deny coverage or cancel policies. Flimsy excuses such as acne could get your insurance canceled and force you into a high risk pool.

What bind are they in? I'm pretty sure their stance is well in line with their "be rich or die" policies.

They've spent the last couple weeks pretending they're not for the thing they're for. Can't rightly cop to their decade-long project on the campaign trail. It's dreadfully unpopular.

They don't have to admit to their "be rich or die" philosophy. They just paint the other side as "socialists" and move on.

I think a system like this has merit. The current system of providing means tested benefits is all wrong.

But there is nothing incompatible with private insurance alongside single-payer, as we see in Europe and the U.S. Remember, nearly half the country (U.S.) is on single payer (Medicare, Medicaid, Disability, VA).

Keep your private insurance if you'd like, and let those of us that want single-payer have our wish as well.

Bingo!

Then perhaps the theory of insurance isn't a solid national healthcare strategy.
Exactly!

We live in free-market capitalism. That's fine. But it's not a national health care system.

Ill just cut and past a version of what ive been saying on this issue.

Cutting preexisting conditions was ALWAYS a failed and illogical idea bound to fail.

Anybody trying to get rid of existing conditions or mess with my moms health insurance (with out any real place for a real solution) will never get my vote.

existing conditions are NOT a black or white issue. its not just about the freeloader that gets insurance after something happens (id be fine in some cases denying that) its about the millions of people that the insurance companies try to screw simply when they switch jobs/insurances. to many politicians have no solution and just want to end it. thats a retarded idea and just screws people over.

twice i had insurance companies try to deny meds i need because i switched jobs. one time for almost a year. another time insurance tried to deny paying for my brothers physical rehab when he switched jobs because he started his rehab before he switched. ACA fixed all that stupidity. So if its between wide open and completely shut i vote wide open every time. If the kids in government want to stop crying and come up with an in the middle solution i could support that too but they arent doing that.

next my mom is fighting cancer, she has BCBS with medicare, without the ACA she would NEVER be able to have the coverage and plan she does. Without it, the reality is minimum she would have had to sell her house or the possibly she could already be passed. Thats not being dramatic thats just facts. ACA is saving her life.

Now with that side, do those stories represent all americans? of course not.... im sure some americans have had problems because of ACA but the goal should be to fix those problems and make it better not scrap them and move to something worse.

to many important issues get polarized in the media and by nutters and people that have no real education of topics . .its sad. the reality is the vast majority of all issues are grey and not defined in a meme, catch phrases or biased talking points.

I know of NO two tiered systems anywhere...certainly not in Canada. It is a criminal offense to bill a patient directly. That's why it works. BY keeping the insurance companies out there is an immediate savings of 30%, and further savings down the road as the US system is over supplied with technology that seldom gets used..

Those are the main reasons American health care is the most expensive in the known universe. You're paying for those extras and profits

If insurance companies can deny coverage due to preexisting conditions then what's the point of insurance in the first place? You had the flu? Denied. Strep throat? Bye-bye. Prostate issues? GTFO.

..and only AFTER a claim had been filed. Till then they cashed the checks.

I can't speak to Canada specifically, but some European countries have both forms. Britain & Germany, come immediately to mind.

As long as i don't have to pay for your single payer that is fine.
however i shouldn't have to pay for both and no matter what system you implement.
you will have to pay for both regardless.

Medicare today requires supplemental insurance. it doesn't cover everything and neither will your single payer.
even in europe they require additional insurance.

PS you won't get medicare you will get medicaid if that and struggle to find doctors.

define preexisting conditions

would you support

a persons asthma meds not being cover when i switch jobs/insurance?
a persons physical therapy no longer be covered if he switch jobs/insurance?
a persons epi pen or diabetes meds not being cover if they switch jobs?
a person having accident while in between jobs, getting fixed, then gaining a new job but then some additional complications spring up and that not being covered?

my guess is no but the issue is thats what insurance was denying to many people when they switched jobs/insurance and its wrong. And none of these politicians that are for dropping preexisting conditions have any ideas in place to fix that, they just want it to end. The door will just be shut.
Do you support that?

i get right now the door is wide open and it should NOT be but nobody is running on just meeting in the middle.

Based on the lies and propaganda, I can understand why an intelligent human being would make that comment.

How is it a 'solid national strategy' most of the rest of the world, but not USA or China?

Have a look at any survey on best places to live. The US is seldom in the top 25, but the top ten are always nations that have universal health care (not single payer - the right invented that phrase to make it sound desperate), Sweden, Canada, Denmark, etc.

Usually, as well, I've noticed the top ten are also countries with very strict gun laws.

Well, you have to pay your taxes, if that's what you're saying.

And yes, I realize no form of insurance is perfect, including private. I have seen tons of people with private insurance get taken to the cleaners, and others on Medicaid get very good care and outcome.

I am biased though. I believe private insurance is mostly a rip-off. I have private insurance, and trust me I wish I could get Medicaid. Roll-out Medicaid for all, and I'm done with private insurers. Seriously.

Sadly, more and more Americans think turning to big government democrats to rule the country will bring good things to earth, like free healthcare for everybody regardless of medical histories. Wise people the world over realize that free government healthcare only comes at great individual cost to people and nations.

Which is why you're the only Industralized Nation that doesn't have any form of UHC?

The democrats gave us ****ty and unaffordable Obamacare. The same people who screwed it up are now trying to use it against republicans, even when the pubs aren't against pre-existing conditions, it's a lie. They have no plans on how to fix it and don't even care to, they want to make it worse.

This morning on the local Sunday political talk show, Scott Walker was asked about the claim that he only started making promises about preexisting conditions very recently.

His answer was "nuh uh, I mentioned it in BOTH debates" ... which was such as softball that the host should have hit it out of the park but the host mostly let it slide.

But hopefully all the rest of the people who aren't hopelessly in the Walker-Trump camps will see that Walker basically agreed that he did only start talking about it recently because the furthest back he could go to show support for the idea was this season's debates.

My husband and I voted for Walker. Three times. Two regular elections and a recall. But this year both of us are voting against him. Even my Trump-voting husband is going to the polls specially to cast a vote against Walker. I hope there are enough like hubby.
