A good opinion piece on the psychology of Trump supporters.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/10/trump-lies-kavanaugh-khashoggi.html

Some notable items:
"It’s easy to conclude that Trump has lost his mind and his lawyers are asleep at the switch. In fact, there’s a method to what appears to be Trump’s madness: The president intends to beat Mueller and his would-be interlocutors in Congress by torpedoing factuality and the rule of law itself."

"Robert O. Paxton, in his classic work The Anatomy of Fascism, defines a cult of leadership as one in which the followers believe the leader’s instincts are better than the logic used by elites. The followers are willing to give up their individuality and freedom in exchange for the leader’s “protection.” And what is Trump protecting his followers from? Scholars Karen Stenner and Jonathan Haidt offer an explanation. In their essay “Authoritarianism Is Not a Momentary Madness but an Eternal Dynamic Within Liberal Democracies,” Stenner and Haidt describe the psychology behind the fervor of the embrace of authoritarians. A certain percentage of the population has “bias against different others” including racial and other minority out-groups. The authoritarian leader stokes their fears, creating a normative threat. These people then turn to the leader as something of a savior. The leader embraces the mythic destiny of the nation. He doesn’t follow laws. He is the law."

"Scholars Oliver Hahl, Minjae Kim, and Ezra W. Zickerman Sivan, in “The Authentic Appeal of the Lying Demagogue,” explain that those who want to destroy the “political establishment” willingly embrace a liar because they understand that the lies themselves serve a destructive purpose. The people who want to destroy the political establishment today are those who are threatened by growing diversity. Trump’s lies work toward that end."

"In a totalitarian regime, state-controlled media normalizes the leader’s constantly changing stories, which serves to further obliterate any notion of a shared truth. Trump’s favorite news outlets similarly normalize his changing stories, thereby undermining factuality. When people can no longer sort out what is factual and what was invented, they conclude that the truth is unknowable. It’s the ultimate in relativism and skepticism. Without facts and a shared reality, jury verdicts have no meaning, and the results of law enforcement investigations are easily manipulated or even dismissed."

"hile the confirmation was in doubt, Trump protested that Kavanaugh was “innocent until proven guilty.” He then ordered an extremely limited investigation of the charges that interviewed a small number of witnesses and didn’t even speak with the accuser or the alleged culprit. Ultimately, he falsely declared that Kavanaugh had been “proven innocent” by the whole charade. This false fact—Kavanaugh was exonerated—now becomes reality to all of his followers."

"Steve Bannon explained a broader administration strategy for dispensing with facts. “The real opposition is the media,” he has said. “And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with ****.”

"Yale professor Timothy Snyder, in his groundbreaking book The Road to Unfreedom, explains in detail how leaders like Vladimir Putin and Trump undermine factuality by flooding the zone in this way. Putin dominates Russia by propagating grand lies that take the entire society off balance. "

"The final aim is to replace democracy itself with a form of autocracy, under which he and his cronies are forever unaccountable for criminal actions. Normalizing lies and flooding the zone shatters the public sphere upon which democracy depends. Without that shared reality, Mueller poses no threat to Trump. Similarly, without a shared public sphere, Trump doesn’t have to worry about resistance. "

Seems to be just one more in a extremely long line of threads whining about Trump voters, Trump supporters and the man him self President Trump.
Still clueless why President Trump beat Hillary.

I don't believe everything Trump says, but he does have things I do think he's right about. Kind of dumb to group all trump supporters as like cultists or something.

"TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE TOO STUPID TO SEE WHAT I SEE!" is the road to nowhere taken by an idiot. These people need to stop talking and start listening....if they have that capacity, a lot of folks dont anymore.

We used to be better.

Ironic tha a true believer in LW BS criticizes those on the left of "believing everything Trump says". I've been on the right for a long time and NOBODY I know "believes" everything Trump says. In fact there's a high level of skepticism on much of what he says. However, we believe what we see: booming economy, job creation, tax relief, wage and wealth growth. And LW insanity.

Why trump's supporters will believe any lie he tells
I'm not of a mind to chide you for the essay you've presented in your OP, but as goes why Trumpkins believe his lies, the reason is as clear and straightforward to me as is the day long: they are unethically bereft disingenuous dissemblers who comport themselves as do murmurations of starlings, their individual incontinence driving them this way and that to dodge the offal their brethren release without a moment's forethought.

Red:
What, among things that can (by the general public) be evaluated as factually and contextually accurate or inaccurate, has Trump said that you "think he's right about?"

I know what he's said that evaluates to being factually and contextually inaccurate and that I thus do not think he's right about.

The piece is spot on. Rather than address Trumps lies and buffoonery they will label any dissent as butthurt over the election or TDS. Trump supporters find it difficult to comprehend that others may have standards in leadership such as integrity. They muddy the waters without a shred of evidence and cling to conspiracy theories like a drowning man grasping a life preserver. There hatred of the other side is so ampliphied and spoon fed to them by Trump and his media they have lost their critical thinking skills.

The Trumpers have swapped their patriotism for convenience and a fleeting modicum of short-term gain.

And as is obvious, when it comes to the 10 Commandments the Evangelicals were never all that enthused.

Excellent bird cage liner, from another leftist clueless about what "fascism" actually is. Noe, hurry and post "Dr.Lawrence Britt's 14 Points of Facsism" equally ridiculous nonsense. Then read what Mussolini and Franco said about FASCISM...you know, the ACTUAL FASCISTS.

Well he is certainly not a liar like so many of the rest, and he is clearly not so easy to steam roll as the rest of been.

Eloquently imbecilic tripe.

No facts [those are my provable assertions] involved, just a regurgitation of the common pablum of the cud chewers on the left. Nothing new, nothing interesting... not a single thing of value.

There might be some things about Trump one can attack reasonably, the post above doesn't even come close. What lie of the Trump administration is worthy of recounting, what lie has he told that has equal value to a keep your doctor/plan/reduction of health care costs? Or the proven lie, since Trump has since accomplished the feat, that the US cannot bring manufacturing jobs back?

Or are you one of the lost that still believe all those lies of the former mis-administration?

Hey, guess what?

The right isn't the wing touting socialism, trying to constrict our speech freedoms, promoting mobs to drown out the opposition, trying to eliminate the presumption of innocence until the facts prove otherwise.

Yano?

You've petty much demonstrated your own intellectual bankruptcy when you start using this sort of psychobabble on your opponents.

There is nothing so comical as the supporters of Pelosi, Waters, Schumer, Booker, Ellison, Avenatti and a host of other congenital liars, questioning the truthfulness of others.

Go through my post history and identify where I explicitly voiced support for any of those people. Go ahead.

The Democratic Party always blames and attacks the voters, just as the OPer and OP blog does.

True, he lies more often than anyone else, anyone that believes trump is a truthful man is lying to themselves.

You are like the "remainers" over here in the UK. Look, you lost, you didn't get your own way, and people with a different view to yourself were and are happy with the outcome. Over here we still have idiots marching up and down the street because they want to remain part of the European corrupt society. My advice is to accept what has happened and get behind a man who genuinely wants to make a difference. Your country is being invaded by hundreds of thousands of immigrants, and all that bothers you is Trump. Very strange indeed

No. It's an excellent diagnosis of TDS, only it's not the TDS the cultists are always referring to which is being explained in the article.

Good post. The article will not gain much traction with the cultists, but it is spot on.

It's a cult.

It's a cult.

A racist cult.

This quote from the article is spot on.

When Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump’s lies by arguing that his false statements actually point to something true, she offered an explanation for why Trump supporters embrace transparent lies. “President Obama was born in Africa,” for example, is a provable lie, but it points toward what to Trump’s supporters see as a deeper truth: President Obama is black, and therefore, isn’t really a real American.

I don't believe everything Trump says, but he does have things I do think he's right about. Kind of dumb to group all trump supporters as like cultists or something.

I do agree with your statement, but I must say that in so many cases his supporters DO behave like cultists. I have friends who see him as some sort of Messiah.
