Trying to wrap my head around someone claiming that they are going to a political rally as part of their Eagle Scout requirements. As far as I am aware, attending a political rally in no way fulfills any qualifications in any scout handbook for any rank. It may count towards some type of volunteer requirements or a camping trip towards camping requirements, but that's about all I can think of. Maybe I've been out of scouts too long, but I never went to a political rally in scouts. Sounds like they are using scouts as an excuse to go to a rally. Thoughts?

Because it is a cheap and emotional attempt at nationalist jingoism.

A little bit of nationalism is good... and boy scouts have always had a patriotism competent.

So you support blind nationalism for a president like Trump who has lied more than any other president in our time. I failed to see where that lying deserves support from the Boy Scouts. Is there a new boy scout badge for "lie your ass off like Trump does"?

It would depend on the project, the benefit of the result of the project to the community or organization for which it was performed and the leadership skills the scout demonstrated while managing the project.

Scouts have been part of political events in the US since 1910 - for both major parties.

Where in the OP, other than the authors’ name, did Trump ever come up? Scouts participate in Republican and Democrat political events?

It would be kind of hard to build an Eagle Scout project out of a political rally where most things are already staged. Now you could make your own political rally, but I don't think even that passes the smell test. Boy Scout requirements are generally apolitical. I have gone to events where local politicians happened to be, but we weren't going there to see them. They most likely were going there to see us.

Oh, I agree it wold be difficult to ge it approved by me or others on our councils Eagle Board, but like I said, it would depend on the project.

Personally, I can’t think of anything at a political rally that could meet the requirements for an Eagle Scout Leadeship Service Project. But it could happen, because I’ve been surprised numerous times by the imagination and ingenuity of scouts.

Mostly scouts are at political events to perform as an honor guard, perform the flag ceremony, or to perform community service hours by helping set up, clean up, provide guide service (help old ladies walk down isles) or other such service. I can’t think of one where we ever participated in the political part, and I’ve been with my troop to events for both parties - apolitically.

In our troop we had the running joke that "building a trail," was the easiest Eagle Project that we could get approved. So they can also be lazy hehe.

Because I have no doubt that this will turn in to another attack president Trump thread.
What is wrong with being involved a cherished civic duty. Be a informed citizen.

I added to that post, by the way.

Yeah, I’ve seen a number of projects get approved that were not IMHO worthy of the title or approval.

There are those that strive for excellence and those that are perfectly satisfied just barely surviving in every group, even within Eagle Scouts.

Then you can't be a libertarian.

I don't care about labels.... but I don't think they need to mutually exclusive.

I certainly am not a fan of globalism, that's for sure. A little bit of nationalism is needed for strong social cohesion and to be united in case our society is threatened.

Nothing at all, but if you read the posts between me and the OP, you will not see any BS or trolling or Trump mentioned at all. Sometimes an honest question to start a discussion for a new thread is just that.

He lies... I don't know a single president that hasn't.

The way Trump lies is different though. It's like a showman lie, it's not very calculated nor manipulative.... you see it coming from a mile away.... he's a terrible liar.

I'd rather have a terrible liar than a good one.

He has brought lying to a whole new high level. He lies almost every single day.

Oh I'm so glad you approve of lying as long as you enjoy listening to the lies. That makes it soo much better.

Well, when I went through a core requirement was that the scout must plan and enact a project of their own, and could be just about anything, so if this guy is performing some service at the rally that sounds like a decent project.

If they are just attending, that's sound pretty weak. Maybe there's a political activism merit badge nowadays, and he's using that to reach the minimum required?

It would help to know the type of event and/or merit badge, but there are three merit badges related to citizenship. Citizenship in the community does have a requirement to 'identify a charitable organization...that brings your community together to work for the good of the community' and to volunteer at least 8 hours. It could also be related to Citizenship in the Nation -- I don't see a direct requirement, but it could certainly be enrichment related to this. Scouting encourages youth to be good citizens, and participate in the electoral process.

What is it when teachers offer extra credit to students who participate in political events?

Don't you want them to be like these kids?

I don't think I said I approve... I just said I'd rather.
Unfortunately I'm quite used to presidents lying from Bush to Obama and now to Trump.... Trump is a little refreshing because he's a terrible liar xD

I'm not entirely sure any of this are specific requirements for Eagle Scout. Just scouting tradition. I don't believe I've ever been to a political party event at scouts. Just townhall visits and the like.

They're not Eagle requirements.

I don't see any problem with scouts at political rallies. It shows support for our President.
