An investigative series by the Boston Globe reveals that former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who killed himself in prison last year, was sexually molested as a young boy.

• Hernandez and his brother, Jonathan, were often beaten by their father, Dennis, while growing up in Bristol, Connecticut. The beatings were sometimes related to Dennis Hernandez's drinking.

• Aaron Hernandez started smoking marijuana in high school with a teammate before school, before football practice and after games.

• The teammate, Dennis SanSoucie, told the Globe he had a sexual relationship with Hernandez in junior high and high school and that the two tried to hide it.

• Jonathan Hernandez told the Globe that Aaron Hernandez disclosed later in his adult life that he had been sexually molested as a young boy. One of Aaron's lawyers in his criminal case also said Aaron had spoken to him of sexual abuse as a child. Neither was willing to identify the perpetrator to the Globe.

• Aaron Hernandez was close to a cousin, Tanya Singleton, and he was crushed when he learned that his mother, Terri, was in a serious romantic relationship with Singleton's husband, Jeff Cummings.

I read the entire article. It looks like Aaron had an old school dad that would beat him and his brother up (essentially child abuse):

transgressions, and sometimes related to the father’s drinking. But there was a special fury when The King felt his two sons were not trying hard enough in school or sports, said Jonathan, whose upcoming memoir, “The Truth about Aaron,” is due out later this month. Sometimes the boys couldn’t see any cause for the beatings at all — a kind of impulsive lashing out that Aaron would also manifest in the years to come.

He said he and his brother were raised believing that seeking psychological help for problems was a sign of weakness.

Aaron was beat up by a disciplinarian father who was intolerant and a criminal himself. Aaron ended up having a secret homosexual relationship with his high school qb and his relationship with his mom was pretty bad too:

In one, Aaron suggested that she never helped fully treat his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as a boy.

“Matter of fact, you’re the reason I never could pay attention in school and ****. You were supposed to get me my medication,” he said in a call in the fall of 2014.

“Yeah, I knocked you over the head with a frickin’ hammer. That was your medication,” she replied.

Later in that same conversation, his mother seemed to equate the effects of an ADHD medication with a dangerously addictive drug.

“That’s what Adderall is: B-L-O-W,” she spelled out over the phone.

The two went back and forth repeating those letters because Aaron couldn’t figure out what she was trying to spell, until his mother became frustrated and blurted out: “Cocaine, dip****! That’s what Adderall’s like.”

Wow. Aaron had a lot of violence and sexual frustration pent up inside. He obviously did not have a strong support system and found support in local gangs.

I blame the Patriots.

Sad. But we are each products of our genetics and experiences and in the end we are each held personally accountable for whatever that product turns out to be.

I think the best example our Presidents sets is not to use drugs and stay away from alcohol. That's some great advice. I know many people drink socially and use recreational drugs, but for many, drugs and alcohol can only lead down a dark path.

If we want victims to stiffen up and fly right coddling them celebrating their victimhood is not the way to go.

We are partly responsible when so many turn into abusers.

Then we beat the crap out of them.

Life is a funny business.

Why didn't he report the abuse to police? Are we sure we should believe these claims without evidence?

For the same reason that so many victims of abuse by priests, in Boston and Pennsylvania and elsewhere, did not report the abuse--they were young and intimidated by the system.

Not surprising to me that Hernandez was abused. It explains how his life was led--violence and intimidation and finally murder.

I sat through a trial with similar themes. A young man sodomized by his father from a young age, and told by his mother to shut up and don't talk about it, eventually killed them both on a Sunday morning.

Very sad, indeed.

Mr. Hernandez was apparently ashamed of his bisexuality, so he let his life get out of control.

Of course, there was no reason for him to hide his feelings.

Like many other people (straight, gay, or bisexual), he did not like himself, so he could not expect others to like him.

I guess the happiest people in the world are those who know that they are good people and are proud of themselves, despite what any ignoramuses think.
