I've voted for a few democrats here in Alabama. I'd vote for some of them again.

After witnessing the last couple of years, my question is serious. What would make you continue to be part of this party?

If you don't have anything nice to say or can't say what you feel in a reasonable manner... consider not replying.

Lifelong Democrat here.

I care about equal opportunity for ALL people. Want a social safety net to help the less fortunate. Most of the people who get this help deserve it. In our form of capitalism some do very well others not so much. Want our country to be militarily strong but not venture into foreign wars so quickly. Hate when we learn of kids being killed or maimed in foreign wars. In favor of a woman's right to choose. I would say that this has limits. We need to keep up with science and limit the time for this choice to when the unborn becomes viable.

So that is a short list off the top of my head.

Started out as a liberal democrat and became a conservative one. The Blue Dogs best represent my politics. Never has a desire to leave the party.

I started out as a Republican, young Turk business owner with my pants on fire. That's when plant owners sat in an office above the shop floor and where involved with their employees. Then Reagan turned me into and independent with his voodoo economics. And Mit Romney pushed me into the Democratic party by not "worrying about half the people" he wanted to vote for him. I'm NOT a socialist but I see what unbridled capitalism has done and is doing to my country and I DON'T like it at all. If we keep on letting extremely wealthy people govern our politicians we will all be vagrants and they will have killed the Goose with their greed. We are practicing suicide capitalism in These United States; no mistake about it.

Single-payer healthcare, actual immigration reform, LGBT rights, abortion rights...

None of the reasons matter in these elections except for one: to try to keep Trump in check more. He proved to be the same as before 2016. He never "grew" into the office. He is still the unpredictable egomaniac with all kinds of conflicts of interest (vs his businesses), but now with many more powers largely unchecked by the Rep Congress (let alone access to nukes).

Because their platforms tend to reflect my values more often than right wing platforms do.

Wow. Is this ever a strange question given the events of the last two years.

I would think, it's the only realistic alternative to Trumpism as Donald has taken over the GOP so where would you go?

I think the real question is, what would make someone continue to be a republican despite it becoming the party of "evil.?"

In my case, I stay to rid the party of Trump. Work for change from within.

I am only registered as a Democrat so I can vote in Democrat primaries here in NY. I was an Independent and before that a Republican.

But I only vote for Democrats now because:

1. Republican economics is silly. They just cut taxes for the rich and never cut spending. They always claim tax cuts wil pay for themselves but they never do.

2. Republican support the prison industrial complex. Private prisons and harsh drug laws that destroy minority communities.

3. Republican social conservatives disgust me. I'm a Christian but Christan conservatives are the opposite of Christian. They promote hate and intolerance. Anti-gay laws are just one example.

4. Republican environmental policy ignores science. They care more about making money than clean air and water.

5. Republican policy is just a corporate wishlist regarding regulations. But in the early 1900's there were few regulations and it was a disaster. Corporate tyranny is just as dangerous and government tyranny.

Democrats are on the opposite side of these Republican positions. That's why I vote Democrat.

I second the above.

I would add that my problem with Republican economics is not simply their blind, ideological devotion to tax cuts (which are the WORST single form of economic stimulus there is)....but also their non-stop war on funding for education, scientific research, infrastructure spending, job training, aid to the poor and (basically) everything in the budget that is NOT related to defense spending or tax cuts.

I would also add that, in addition to their hostility toward LGBTQ community, Republicans are also hostile toward EVERY other religious and racial group other than Christians and Anglos. The thing (or, certainly ONE "thing") that most white conservatives do not understand is that African-Americans (90+% support for the Democratic Party), Latinos (70%) , Asian-Americans (65%), Muslims (90%), College students (i.e. the young people being "brainwashed" by "liberal academia") and most immigrants are not all "liberals".

The reason that almost EVERY major demographic group other than conservative, rural/suburban white males (and their wives) votes AGAINST the GOP (in fact, are repulsed by the modern GOP) is because these group recognize racial bigotry and religious intolerance/prejudice when they see it....especially when it is aimed at them. They know what it looks like, because they've lived it. Rather than recognize the reality that whites and non-whites experience life, from day to day, much differently than whites in this country, conservative Republicans cling foolishly to idiotic conspiracy theories about "liberal media influence" and "plantation mentalities" because doing so allows them to NOT challenge their existing biases and prejudices.

For example, these groups are generally not confused or surprised when Republicans say "I'm not a racist/I'm against racism"...and then say "I support Voter ID because voter fraud is a major problem.". That sort of incongruence escapes most conservative Republicans, but not most minorities in the country. No one cares if you are, or aren't a bigot. People care about is what you do, not what you say. People care about policy and action, not personal feelings. And most conservative Republicans either don't understand that, or believe they can con people into voting against their own personal interests.

I wasn't trolling here... I just can't believe the lack of civility on the part of dems lately, Maxine Waters is at the top of my " Holy Crappola" list. Very disappointing show

Please don't misunderstand me.... Trump's an Asshat... but he's Our President, like it or not.

Best answer yet...

I am an independent that votes democratic, for the most part. They are the only party that recognizes abortion rights for women as a fundamental HUMAN right. Thus, the republican position I find inhuman and reeking of misogynist dogma.

Secondly, the Democrats are the party that truly supports religious freedom. By opposing theocrats on the right, they help maintain my right NOT to believe in any gods and to keep our public discourse secular, not atheist, just secular.

Thirdly, the Republican party is lost in an economic fantasy that hurts us all. The mythical free market has excused some really bad decisions. Incredibly, the republicans seem unwilling to admit that if tax cuts for the rich are accompanied by massive debt, as they are now, you have paid the rich, once again, at the expense of the poor. Wealth, after all, knows no borders but poverty is local as ****. The Republican fiscal policy is madness. There is no investment in the nation, just gifts to the rich.

Finally, there is war. Juxtaposed against conservative moralizing is their very real military obsession. There has not been a republican president in the last fifty years who has not been a shameless war whore and written blank checks to the military industrial complex.

Conservatives and many democrats thrive on military positive platitudes. I remember, though, when George W spoke of the Iraq war as "the first war of the 21st century". When I heard that I felt a sense of hopelessness that peace is ever going to happen. That cavalier acceptance of war, as an immutable part of human life, made me question the goodness and intelligence of all men, especially him. I question the Republican party for their own lack of moderation to their blood lust. Bomb Bomb Iran was not a liberal tune.

For these and other reasons I support the Democratic party. When it comes right down to it, despite their shrill whining and their own utopian dogma, the democrats are the only moral choice for me. Their INTENTION is almost always superior. To allow my votes to reward religious fanatics and shameless sycophants to wealth would not be, in any small way, repaid by the confidence that comes with being one of the establishment.

Some call it a choice between two evils but, when the difference is that dramatic, the smaller evil, Democratic party, pales by comparison.

Thanks guys.... I appreciate the responses.
