Washington (CNN)The US Senate voted narrowly to advance Brett Kavanaugh to the threshold of the Supreme Court, as President Donald Trump's pick survived a dramatic procedural vote that could have effectively killed his nomination after sexual assault allegations were made against him.

The vote was 51-49, after key swing Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Jeff Flake, along with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, voted to advance the nomination. The final vote is expected Saturday.

One wavering Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, defied her party and voted against advancing the nomination, and declared that she will vote against Kavanaugh's confirmation Saturday as well.

"He's not the right man for the court at this time," she told reporters.

Good for Murkowski!

Good for Murkowski!

This whole high school drama was feeding into the partisans on both sides but if she didn't feel he was the right person for the job, I am glad she did what she felt was right for her instead of just towing the party line.

Senator Susan Collins announces Kavanaugh vote - live stream

Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) is one of the few remaining undecided votes on Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Today at 3 p.m. – in a speech on the Senate floor – she will announce how she will vote.

Earlier Friday, Collins voted "yes" on advancing Kavanaugh to a final vote. But that vote was only to advance to a final vote and is not a definite indicator of which way the she will go in the final vote. The Maine Republican is a key vote for confirming Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

I hope she has what it takes to make a tough decision.

Did anyone ever think that Collins was going to do anything but vote yes. Now she is just trying to do her best to give reasons for her vote. In the end she is just another Trump GOPer. Remember she voted for Trump's tax cut and now she will vote for his candidate, who in the end will reduce Roe to the trash bin. And she will then say about her promise, I can't believe he would do that, he said it was settled law.

I've been listening to her & I agree with your conclusion.

I said that from day one she would vote yes.

To think this woman claims to be pro-choice.

If she votes no- that takes it to 50-49 - then Manchin will cast a yes vote and the VP will break the tie
