Activists Raise $1 Million to Pressure Collins to Oppose Kavanaugh | Time
It seems that many of her constituents are pushing Susan Collins to vote against Kavanaugh for SCOTUS. I have seen poll where her favorability ratings have gone from 67% to 49%. I am not sure when she comes up for election again, but there is a promise by many in her state that she should vote this candidate down. Collins has complained about this kind of pressure, but again, part of her promise to her state was she would not vote for any SCOTUS candidate that would overturn Roe. After she accepted a promise, that no one believed would be forthcoming, on her vote for the Trump tax cut, her constituents seem to think she should not be so naive to believe Kavanaugh's "it is settled law" statement that he would not overturn Roe. In fact, Collins had to know he was chosen to do just that. So instead of pressure, I am sure many see her vote for Kavanaugh as a huge breaking of one of her major promises. SO do you think that if Collins votes for Kavanaugh she will pay the ultimate political price?

Maine is a blue state. I do think that there will be [and rightfully so) blow-back against Collins supporting someone like Kavanaugh for the SCOTUS bench.

The entire truncated FBI background check is a farce employed to provide the swing Senators - Collins, Murkowski, Flake, Heitkamp, and Manchin - enough political cover to vote yes.

sorry the democrats got exactly what they asked for and that was a background check into the accusations submitted to the committee.
they agreed to a limited scope limited time frame investigation.

so there was no farce there was no fraud.
you just don't like the results that cleared him of any sexual assault and wrong doing.

she might get the same blowback that heitkamp will get.

I don't know what they want because I don't live in Maine.

Really? I certainly don't recall asking for a background check in which the FBI would be prohibited from interviewing Ford, her husband, Kavanaugh himself, Jeremiah Hanafin, Kavnaugh's school classmates, Kavanaugh's Yale classmates, witnesses suggest by Ramirez and witnesses suggested by Ford.

I would say it would be very much out of character for me to ask for such an investigation, and I find it extremely unlikely that any other Democrat asked for that either.

Why would Collins approval rating have dropped? She has been a hold out and even today no one knows how she wiil vote. Collins isnt up for re-election this year anyway so polls dont mean anything.

When did the agree to a limited investigation. As far as I know they okayed a limited time, but not the investigation itself.

I just heard of a poll that shows that 49% of the state wnt her to vote no and 42% want a yes vote. Kind of the Dems and independents on one side and the Gopers on the other.

If for once you actually read my OP you would have seen the question was "if" she voted for Kavanaugh, would her constituents turn against her.

Murkowski is a no vote.

Collins is up for reelection in 2020. And I don't think there is much doubt that her YES vote will lead to her demise. Kavanaugh's image/reputation is only going to continue to plunge in the weeks and months to come.

The impact of her YES vote for Kavanaugh will be determined in large part by the interviews and investigations of all 40+ people who were excluded by the WH from the "limited" background check. There are a LOT of people who were ignored by the FBI (under orders of the WH), who will be coming forward to give their stories about Kavanaugh and/or about the allegations made by Ford, Ramirez, etc.

This will not go away, even when/if Kavanaugh is confirmed (in large part due to Collins' vote).

Nope, she is well liked in her state, and has a reputation for nit being another rubber stamp vote for the Party's agenda. Heck I like the lady and I am a Liberal that does not live in her State. No she will have no problem being re-election.

Murkowski is a no vote.

She has no choice. Everyone in her state including the natives that got her elected would desert her if she voted yes. That won't make a difference if the GOP gets Collins and one dem vote from a Dem senator running in a red state.

I read that she won't be up for reelection until 2022. By that time memory of this will have strongly faded, leading me to believe she did this out of a sense of principle.

You may be right for the wrong reason. Collins, who everyone says is a "moderate" Republican is wrong as she is now part of the far right wing of their party that bows down to anything Trump wants. And just like the rest of the GOP, any promise she gives will be forgotten the next time her bosses in the party tell her how to vote. And she will win again as the party will pay her back by spending millions to get her reelected. Like I have said, McCain was the last person in congress that could be considered a "statesman". It for sure there are now none left on either side of the aisle. All there are more worried about their ability to get reelected than they are about this country or the people in it. Look at Manchin from West Virginia. He became a yes vote when his opponent in West Virginia made an issue out of Kavanaugh. I hope their positions make them feel good about themselves. I hope I am still alive when Kavanaugh is the final vote that overturns Roe and people stick that in Collins face.

They don't know what they want. Its Maine! Absent Lobster, not much going on there. I know that sounds harsh. But they have been all over the map politically forever. Collins for her part, is Rand Paul in pumps. Collins was always going to be a yes. Murkowski and Flake were the possible No votes.

I do wonder where Flake thinks he is going. If not entirely out of politics, then who does he think would vote for a spineless earthworm with a face that perennially looks like a melting candle? Is he off to a career on K Street? That is about the only thing that makes any sense.

She was damned either way.

If she voted NO she would lose a Republican primary guaranteed. She voted Yes so she may lose against a good Democrat in a Senate race.

The political calculation is that you have a better chance in a Senate race that you might win than a primary you are guaranteed to lose.

Which of course once again makes the point about the utter travesty of the career politician, desperate to hang onto to their seats as their first and most pressing concern above all else. Ultimately you end up with a bunch of senile ancients running around both sides of the Hill, most particularly the Senate.

I don't think the problem is politicians trying to hold on to their seats by placating voters. The problem is when politicians do things to placate donors and special interests or wose to enrich themselves like Trump and family.

Her approval has taken a beating throughout the nomination battle. But keep in mind that she's not up until 2020.

And the crowpac account opened to oppose her surged to over $2M during the time it took her to give her speech. It seems to have crashed. https://www.crowdpac.com/campaigns/387413/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-kavanaugh-or-we-fund-her-future-opponent

The poll also found that Collins also has a 35 percent approval rating in her state, along with a 48 percent disapproval rate and 17 percent of respondents said they are “not sure” if they approve of her job performance or not.

Collins, Murkowski, Flake, etc are "moderates" only by today's standards.

Sen. McCain was an interesting guy. He really wasn't considered much of a statesmen until the last 10-15 years, or so. Hero? Yes. But "statesman"? Not so much, really. For most of his congressional career, he was viewed as a hot-head with little real interest in legislating, whose temper sometimes clouded his judgment. And he was, ideologically, considered to be a rightie (not a "moderate"). He began to change his image during his 2000 primary campaign against GW Bush. And as a legislator, he authored only one single bill during his 30 years in congress. But, all of that being said, he was still a national treasure who lived an honorable life and left behind a legacy that will only improve over time....because of the very thing you noted. He didn't become a "moderate". The party around him changed, so that McCain was "moderate" by comparison.

As for Sen. Collins, you might be right. She also might just run for Governor in Maine, instead. But certainly, this vote will be what defines her legacy as a U.S. Senator. I hope she is at peace with that, because it's not going to be a good thing, in the history books.

I agree!

His citing of the Clintons and the loss of the 16' election is reason enough to question his qualifications and is something you would expect to hear from the usual ideologues here. I understand that both Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford were testifying under oath and lying would be a felony offence. So because only one could possibly be telling the truth, the other is guilty of a felony.

It obviously comes down to who you believe. Personally I believe Dr. Ford's heart felt testimony over Kavanaugh's unhinged, over-the-top angry screed. But I understand why the good ol' boys club would believe the opposite. But if they really believe that, why isn't the 'law and order party' calling for Dr. Ford's head?

I believe someone should he prosecuted for lying and if it's the good doctor, so be it, throw the book at her. But there's only one way to determine who's the liar and that requires a thorough investigation.

Who took a polygraph exam and who refused? Who's calling for a real investigation and who limited it to a handful of witnesses and five days? The reason is simple and as plain as the stubby fingers on Trump's 6'-2" frame, they can't handle the truth...
