Ruth Bader Ginsburg Criticizes Treatment Of Kavanaugh During SCOTUS Hearings..;

Public hearings for SC nominees didn't start until 1916, the first nominee to show up didn't happen until 1925. And the first televised hearing was 1981 on cable. Since 1981 Senator grandstanding became front and center. It wasn't anti- democratic before, why would it be now ??

Maybe “anti-democratic” is the wrong word. But generally I think of openness and transparency of government as being more democratic. Admittedly, back in the days before 24 hr cable news and the internet, the difference between closed and open hearings was more negligible.

It is a horribly viscious partisan cycle we find ourselves in. The Dems will cite Judge Garland’s treatment and they are 100% correct to be upset about that. So then the Dems go ultra-partisan when it is a Republican president’s turn. Do they think it will stop there? Do they think the Republicans will “learn their lesson”? No. Next time the Republicans will cite how hyperpartisan the Dems were being to excuse a new level of partisanship. Then the Dems will do it again and around and around we go.

We are cycling around and around and down and down, not unlike a toilet bowl flushing. I have no idea how we are going to overcome the inertia of our political trajectory.

Garland wasn't given a confirmation hearing, there is NO comparison to what the Democrats are trying to do to Kvanaugh. Kagan and Sotomayor made it through their confirmation hearings and were confirmed by both Democrats and Republicans

That is my point. Each time the behavior gets worse. Hyperpartisanship is escalating, not leveling out.

Yep. Biden suggested it. Bad. Republicans actually did it. Worse. And that downward trajectory continues back and forth.

Just like the harry reid 50+1 rule...which was heavily celebrated by the left...until they lost power.

The left reminds me of the Nazi's and their "Thousand year reich"...they governed, changed the rules and acted as if they would be in power forever. Until they weren't.

Okay here's some higher ground.
Kavanaugh is most likely getting in but you guys better not get too used to things going 100 percent your way for very long because Kavanaugh is probably the last RW SCOTUS justice you are going to seat for a generation.
So enjoy it while you can. You might sway the Court for five years at most.
There on out, you're outnumbered and out maneuvered in every election until maybe 2050, or longer.
You may very well wind up seeing three SCOTUS justices seated with the power to oppose ripped from your grasp, because you guys blew it up with the nuclear option already.

I don't blame the Democratic Party from doing all they can to add some friction to a well greased RNC slam dunk, but I realize Kavanaugh is getting in, but I also know that's the swan song for the Right for a very long time, and not just in the SCOTUS either.

Reid, Democrats trigger ‘nuclear’ option; eliminate most filibusters on nominees
https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...d2ca728e67c_story.html?utm_term=.4e5b8e0f99e1

You realize Harry Reid is why the Republicans have access to the Nuclear option, dont you ?? And your projection of the GOPs imminent demise is awesome. Sounds like the pre-elections projections of Hillary winning by a landslide. Here's why Conservatives never have to worry about having " power stripped " from them.

Liberal Progressive policies dont actually DO what Democrats claim they do. Liberal policies dont fix income disparity, they create it. They dont grow the middle class economy, they destroy it and they dont grow the economy, they throw a huge wet blanket on free market economies.
Things dont get better under administrations like Obama's, they get much worse and that leads to staggering losses, like we saw from 2010-2016. Obama and Liberal economist told us that the economic stagnation we experienced under Obama was the new normal. We best get used to it. Free market Capitalism had finally run its course, and only massive stimulus and debt, and tax increases could get the economy going again.

Had Hillary won we would have been forced to listen to that nonsense for another 4 years, but she didn't. Trump showed everyone just how effective pro-growth policies are and that Obama's new normal was just his attempt at justifying his horrible economic record

Our country has very little foresight. Corporations just care about the next current quarter and our politicians just care about the next election. They forget or just don’t care that what they do now lays the groundwork and precedent for what happens next.

That is a depressing point, but if I am honest with myself I have already given up on our government. All I can do is the best I can to set myself and my family up for success despite our increasingly partisan and incompetent government.

The complicated question is: if I have no respect for our government, how can I have respect for the voters who put them in office or for the laws the politicians make? These things actually keep me up some nights.

:( it would be a lie to say I have not wept.

RBG is what a SCOTUS nominee is supposed to be.

Not like Kavanaugh who refuses to answer questions by using the all-encompassing "hypothetical" duck.

Short memory? RBG did the same thing..... Oh no.....

I am sure all are oh so very scared by your silly wishful dreaming. :lamo

I think the Dems are nuts. They really think they're gonna get someone more to their liking if the torpedo this nomination? Kavanaugh is qualified and his opinions aren't out of the mainstream - he and Garland agreed on the vast majority of cases that came before the court.

Depending on what else they do, it might not be an entirely unreasonable strategy if the vote gets pushed back to beyond the elections. If they luck out, the gamble would pay off.

I also meant my comment more generally.

Democrats should be relied upon to try every trick in the book to keep a non-commie lefty from being appointed to SCOTUS, no matter how crooked, dishonest or dirty. That is what they do. The continued existence of their corrupt party depends on it.

My eyes and ears are working just fine.

There's a reason I'm not a Democrat.

But there's an even bigger reason that for the foreseeable future I'll be doing all I can to help Democrats hold the line against the new Putin-loving GOP.

Obama screwed up a lot. If he hadn't, we wouldn't have Trump. But as bad as Obama was, Republicans are worse. That is why I am no longer a Republican. And your wall of links does nothing to convince me that I was wrong in leaving the hypocritical, Trump-enabling party. And does nothing to convince me not to fight against them in every way I can for the foreseeable future.

Same article

"Targeted expulsions like the one announced this week are not uncommon. When former President Barack Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats in response to Russia's interference in the 2016 US election, the move was made under similar conditions. "

So the current administration dumped twice as many as the previous.

I would expect the president to not be happy as an attempt to normalize relations is interrupted with the need to slap them with more sanctions.

I find myself forced to vote republican as the green party is somewhat insane and the democrats have raped the country for near two centuries. Only the constitutionalists seem rational at this point. Most others seem purely self interested.
