Actor Dreyfuss has been highly critical of the ending of civics classes in the public education for nearly 50 years. He urges that all students are taught the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and how great a change this was for any prior system of government or philosophy of government.

I've often commented that because the required school testing does not include any civics questions, it therefore was discontinued and that this is a terrible mistake. No one is born knowing this nation's history, our this nation's creation was so revolutionary in the most real terms unlike any government before, or knowing the US Constitution or Bill Of Rights. Yet that should be the one common ground, the one common values system, we all share regardless of other political ideologies or partisanship.

Well reasoned. Kids need to be taught facts and truth, not brainwashed to believe propaganda. All 8 of my kids went to Christian school for their entire school age lives. Kids need to be taught to know and fear God in order to be good citizens and good people.

The need to be taught the history of the world without a partisan or ideological agenda, they need to be taught the history of this country and then need to be taught the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights in the context of world history from the past to the present - not the current way of looking at today's PCism and then looking back only at our history - totally ignorant of the rest of the world or unthinkably dismal lives nearly all humans had in world history - the vast majority as slaves, serfs and servants of no rights of any kind whatsoever.

IMO, kids need to be exposed to religion and allowed to come to their own conclusions. Exposure to many things in life is one of the duties of parents, imo. Let them find out what they like/are good at........

I couldn't agree more, and I'm not a religious person at all.

Judeo Christian values and religion itself are woven into the fabric of this country's founding and that's something that in my opinion, can't be ignored. Religious freedom was one of the things that brought people here in the first place, which is why it's no accident that it ended up being included in the very first amendment of the Bill of Rights.

I've been saying for a while now that immigrants know more about American civics, as is required to become citizens, than the native born.

Agreed! Let's implement teaching the Holy Koran in public schools, from Kindergarden on up, as soon as possible!

The topic is about returning to teaching kids "civics classes." That means learning of our Constitution, Bill of Rights, the history leading to it, and then the rights and obligations we have individually and collectively towards each other and our country. This has NOTHING to do with religion, other than it would be appropriate to mention the non-theocratic role religion may have had in our history. Whether there is or isn't a God or Gods is irrelevant.

I agree. Civics should be a required subject
 
I think it's a great idea. People have become incredibly complacent in this regard, and not understanding the reasons why this country sought independence and the Constitution/Bill of Rights which set the parameters for governance puts voters at a serious disadvantage. You can't have an educated voter base if they don't understand the system of governance.
