Trump rejected plans for a White House statement praising McCain

Ahhh ... the lamenting about Trump's lack of kind words has begun ...

I'm beginning to think 1 of the biggest things pissing off Thumpsters is the Black guy in the WH that they absolutely hated for 8 years had more class in his little finger than Trump has in his whole body.

President Donald Trump broke his closely watched silence on Sen. John McCain, tweeting his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the family of the senator after his death was announced on Saturday night.
"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump tweeted.

My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 26, 2018

The exclamation point was way beyond “class!”

He was going to get blasted no matter what so why not post something short and sincere. It's not exactly a secret that he and McCain didn't get along so why try to fake it?

Yeah, funny how that happens when you declare that you "like people who weren't captured".

A Senator died. A Senator from his own party. I don't think saying something nice about him would have hurt anything.

Not so sure. The Admin statement would have been extensive because of everyone involved, while only Trump's name would actually be attached. Him putting his name on an extensive group statement would have fed into attention stealing.

You do realize that every single world leader and politician has said something about McCain today right? I mean all three networks have wall to wall coverage of people complimenting the man. Now, it is technically possible that Swampy thought about the long game and figured anything I say would be attacked by the media anyway, but no that's not what happened. He purposely struck down the response, which every other politician (and their staffs) has put together.

Trump had something to say, appropriately undertone. A joint Admin flourishing statement with his name on it would have been used as a distraction.

haha more like they did have something good to say and Swampy thought his tweet was better. (It wasn't.)

No. Putting his name on a flourishing statement would have been a meme fest. Everyone is welcome to do their thing.

according to current and former White House aides, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations

Another he said she said, I heard it trough the grapevine. Nameless people supposedly said. Yeah, that's what happened for sure.

Look, it does not matter what Trump said, did or did not say or do... he would have been roasted here by the haters either way no matter what.

It would have been better than the tweet. If you are that concerned over it, than he shouldn't have put anything out. However, because of his petty words and petty fights where he looks completely unpresidential he bombed as president no matter what. You guys seem to support the president acting like a complete ass.

I agree with those guys in part, but "support" isn't the right word here. I'll speak for me only, but I KNOW he's a complete ass, a childish, selfish narcissist who didn't like McCain and felt nothing when he died. McCain knew it, the family knew it.

We wish we had a President who could put aside their disagreements and rise to the occasion and sincerely honor the man for a lifetime of sometimes flawed service, but we do NOT have such a President, and we'd know such a statement purporting something else was BS. Killing the statement confirms what many of us have known for a long time, but it was the right thing to do IMO for the family, and it also shows us the "real" Donald Trump. So I'm OK with it. That's who he is.

Well of course Trump was going to get blasted regardless of what he did.
That's all that most of the media is doing anymore.

"according to current and former White House aides"

How 'former' could these aides have been? All this happened in the last week or so, didn't it?
Makes me skeptical of this.
