“In 2016, American intelligence agencies delivered urgent and explicit warnings about Russia’s intentions to try to tip the American presidential election — and a detailed assessment of the operation afterward — thanks in large part to informants close to President Vladimir V. Putin and in the Kremlin who provided crucial details,” the New York Times reports.

“But two years later, the vital Kremlin informants have largely gone silent, leaving the C.I.A. and other spy agencies in the dark about precisely what Mr. Putin’s intentions are for November’s midterm elections.”

I wonder what changed.

I wonder what changed.

They are afraid a Trump White House would give them up to Putin?

They no longer think the U.S. is worth taking any risks for? thanks to a president who has crushes on murderous dictators?

If he hasn't outed them already.

No. But, we are now.

We had no clue that Russia was going to Syria, or even could...Our level of ignorance on Russia has been horrifying.

Our current ineptitude is nothing new.

The excuses for bad work change.

What makes you think we didn't know?

Are you sure? Because intervention was proposed by Russia at the UN and required an act of the Russian parliament. Kinda difficult things to hide don’t you think?

Of course I am sure, and I am not teaching tonight but I will give you a place to start your education:

One of the main events of 2017 has been the victory won by the Russian armed forces and the Assad government in Syria. When Russian President Vladimir Putin decisively intervened in Syria’s bloody civil war in September 2015, many were taken completely by surprise. Western commentators and politicians ― including none other than then-U.S. President Barack Obama ― unanimously predicted that Moscow would get bogged down in the Syrian conflict.

Note: This is a very good rundown of what happened, worth a look regardless of how much one already knows about Russia in Syria.

Newsflash: it wasn't a surprise.

On 27 September, President Vladimir Putin stated, in an interview with CBS's '60 Minutes': "More than 2,000 terrorist-fighters from Russia and ex-Soviet republics are in the territory of Syria. There is a threat of their return to us. So, instead of waiting for their return, we are helping President al-Assad fight them".[

If you make your case in full and can manage civility then will respond. If this issue is not worth that much time from you then surely it is not for me.

So I posted this in a thread that apparently is going to be deleted, but it is a good thought:

Apparently Putin is hunting down those that are leaking information to our CIA. Interesting to say the least.

Thoughts?

Personally think someone over there has something really hot to link Putin to Trump.
Were they giving us information, or was it disinformation that we being rather dim took as the truth....see that there is a question.

I wonder what changed.

I know.
The DNC was busy smelling their own arrogant farts during 2016 thinking the election was theirs so they didn’t care about said warnings about Russian interference.
Then they lost and had to try real hard to blame anyone but themselves for the embaressment of losing to the guy they were so sure to beat.

The fact those intelligence agents did nothing about security during the election because they were also certain the DNC was going to win sort of puts them on the fence of unreliable

The entire piece is not a comment on anything more than the benefit of deploying limited military resources effectively...something Putin has no choice but to do. That's a lesson we refuse to learn in this country. Then again the forces of the military/industrial complex here are no anxious for anybody to learn that lesson here.

That said, I am not in favor of the widespread use of mercenaries another area of the Russian experience in Syria touted in the piece. If you don't have either the right military assets for the job or the heart within those assets for the job, get the f--k out. You don't belong there. Hiring a bunch of mercenaries who are not restricted by standard rules of military conduct is simply looking for a result at any means. Not a place for this country to be.
